What you need to know

  • PC shipments increased by at least 1.5 percent in Q2 2019.
  • Around 63 million devices shipped in that time.
  • The top brands were Lenovo, HP, Dell, Apple, and Acer.

PC shipments were up at least 1.5 percent in the second quarter of 2019. Gartner and IDC released estimates for shipments in that time (via VentureBeat). As they are estimates, there is variation between the reports, but both indicate overall PC shipment growth in the second quarter of this year.

Gartner estimates that 63 million devices were shipped in Q2 2019; a 1.5 percent increase. The leading PC makers according to Gartner were Lenovo, HP, Dell, Apple, and Acer. Lenovo led the quarter with a 25 percent market share, and HP was second at 22.2 percent.

IDC has a higher estimate of 64.9 million devices shipped in Q2 2019. The market share rankings were slightly different, with Lenovo leading the pack followed by HP, Dell, Acer, and Apple. The top five is the same as Gartner's estimates but Acer and Apple swapped spots. Both reports have Acer and Apple within half a percent of each other.

While overall PC shipments were up, a large portion of that increase came from Lenovo. Gartner estimates that Lenovo increased shipments by 15.9 percent and IDC estimates a growth of 18.2 percent. HP (2.6 percent) and Dell (2.1 percent) saw more modest increases according to Gartner with similar numbers of 3.2 percent for HP and 3.1 percent for Dell coming from IDC.

Several companies saw their numbers go down in the same quarter. Acer (-14.4 percent), ASUS (-9.9 percent), Apple (-0.2 percent), and "Others" (-6.7 percent) all saw negative growth according to Gartner. IDC differs with only Acer (-1.7 percent) and "Others" (-4.9 percent) experiencing negative growth.

The solid quarter from Lenovo propelled the company into the top spot for PC market share. Both Gartner and IDC had Lenovo behind HP in both devices shipped and market share in 2018's second quarter and Lenovo leading both categories in Q2 2019. Lenovo led in terms of total shipments as well with 15,774000 devices shipped according to Gartner and 16,254,000 according to IDC.
