Roman Empire invades Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8

Ever think if you led the Roman Empire back in 753 B.C. things would have been different?  Well now is your chance with the new Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 game Roman Empire.

It is a strategy-based game where you are the new Caesar in command of the Empire.  Your goal, conquer Europe.  Game play is simple but challenging and if you like strategy games, Roman Empire is worth a try.

Roman Empire Campaign Map

Game play with Roman Empire centers around a European map.  You start with Rome being a small village where you send your troops out to conquer neighboring villages and cities.  As you conquer these areas, your troop strength grows and your Empire expands.  There are plenty of tutorial pop-up windows appearing throughout the game to give you strategy hints and game play instructions.

Troop movement is done by tapping/dragging from city to city.  You move troops to attack locations and re-enforce/defend existing cities in your Empire.  As you progress through the game, you will find neighboring cities take exception to your efforts to conquer the world and attack you.

Roman Empire Battle Screen

The game plays in campaign (or level) style with each campaign representing a section of the map to conquer.  Game pace has a little zip to it because if you dilly-dally in conquering your enemies, they muster enough strength to defeat your armies.  Your progress is saved from the last successful campaign.

In just tinkering with Roman Empire for a short bit this morning, it comes across as a fun game for our Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 devices.  My only nit with the game is that the text size is awfully small and difficult to read from the smaller Windows Phone.  You may find the game more enjoyable from the larger screen of a Windows 8 tablet or laptop/desktop.

Roman Empire is a free game for Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8.  You can find the Windows Phone 8 version of Roman Empire here in the Windows Phone Store (opens in new tab).  The Windows 8 version can be picked up here in the Windows Store. (opens in new tab)

Thanks, Jacek, for the tip!

  • That swordfighting will make my ears bleed after a while.
  • Try blocking with your sword instead of your ears?
  • Loooool... :P
  • is it similar to crusader kings
  • is it completely free or with ads
  • There was no Roman Empire in 753 b.c.
  • How dare you come to the interwebs with facts!
  • In that day it was actually called "ICBINTRE"... I Can't Believe It's Not The Roman Empire
  • There was no empire then, true, but Rome as a town was founded in the 9th/8th century BCE, so I'm guessing you start from then in the game :/
  • LoL. Good one! ;)
  • Age of mythology is best strategy game ever and its missing in windows phone store.
  • this is not free. if you want to keep playing new levels you have to pay in game purchase, what I hate a lot.
  • These comments are kinda fun on the WPCentral app on Windows 8.1 - clean.
  • Is the app integrated ,like can we continue the same progress on either devices? Are they synchronized?

  • Hasn't this been in the store for months? Sure I looked at it last year. Or am I thinking of the W8.1 version... They look to have different publishers.
  • We should be playing as Romulus, not Caesar
  • This game is almost a year old... Today i saw this game Medieval Apocalypse in the Windows Store looks pretty decent just don't like the controls.
  • My first comment from the WPcentral app on Windows 8.1
  • I'm still waiting for an update for the roman empire Windows 8 app. The game is too short, needs more levels. It's a very fun game though.
  • I guess I'm an elitist, but I find it hard to even consider games now that don't carry the Xbox Live seal of approval. If I'm not earning achievements, I'm wasting my time.
  • You're missing out on a lot of great games. Not that this one is particularly great ;)
  • Why isn't any dev making an Ikariam mobile app? Best MMO game ever. It has thousands of players around the world and a lot of us are refusing to buy an Android or iOS device just to play it. I would even pay Rudy to develop a 6kariam. It shouldn't be that hard because there are Android and iOS apps that could be ported and if they couldn't be posted, this is a web based game, so it's not like a dev would need to re-create the whole graphics and options.
  • We need age of empiresssss
  • This. Or Command and conquer
  • I still love Civilization Revolution. This one is interesting though.
  • Doesnt look free on Windows 8 to me...says £2.19
  • Go home, Spooner, you're drunk! Nah, just kidding... it's showing as $2.99 for me
  • There is a "Free Roman Empire" but it looks like it only has 6 maps instead of 48:
