Update 4/22: The changelog is now live (opens in new tab) and reposted below.

Microsoft's Surface Duo is in the process of receiving its April 2020 update.

The update will likely contain an assortment of improvements, one of which will be an Android security patch. Given that April's update is 338MB in size, which is far bigger than previous months, there might be a number of noteworthy changes included.

This patch brings the build number from 2021.207.70 to 2021.314.91, with the security patch now being April 20, 2021.

Changes for the April 22 Surface Duo update:

  • Addresses scenarios outlined in the Android Security Bulletin - April 2020.
  • Improves device stability and UI stability.
  • Improves device performance when opening and closing apps, accessing your recent apps, or swiping up to see all your apps.
  • Fixes the scenario where the wallpaper was not appearing after unlocking Surface Duo.
  • Fixes the scenario where a notification badge appears on top of a running app and causes the screen to turn black.

To grab the update yourself, use these steps:

  1. Connect to a Wi-Fi network.
  2. Select Settings on your Surface Duo's home screen.
  3. Select System.
  4. Select System Update.
  5. Select Check for update.
  6. Select Restart now.

As usual, those with AT&T-branded Surface Duos will likely have to wait a week for carrier approval.

  • The image says 82.39MB though 🤔
  • That's an old photo. Please focus on the article details.
  • People don't read anymore.
  • A picture is worth a thousand words…
  • Successfully Updated. Doesn't seem faster. Curious to see the change log
  • You don't think screen rotation and the camera switching are faster?
  • Just tested turning on the cam using the double click of the power button, 1st 3 attempts I got 3 different results. Then on the 4th try onwards, it got it right. If I fold the device in half so both screens are out, cam facing target and other screen facing me, I still get mixed results... Same as before. Sad. But it seems to fail faster so I'll get to a good one quicker. Lol.
  • Just try rotation using a messaging app. It's much faster now.
  • Rotate screen is faster. Single screen with bumper on seems to be better. Double click power button to wake the camera is also more reliable and faster. Had to reboot once after the initial update reboot though.
  • Just updated my Duo. It does seem faster when you rotate it.
  • Yup rotate is much faster.
  • I have a AT&T device.. Does the camera auto orientation work any better? Has anyone checked to see if there are any new settings in the camera app?
  • You can finally use the camera zoom function if menu language is different to English!!!
  • Glad i seen this now i literally tap update every week to see if anything gets posted like Android 11 or so. Oh, also i really love the ergonomic keyboard here as well!!!! And the different style layouts for the keyboard i never knew even existed. It's not quite up to windows 10 mobile standards but this is surely the best typing experience bar none on Android. I keep my phone in book mode or just turn it sideways to text and i talk in bookmode... I just don't see a point in putting a phone to my face anymore to be perfectly honest. Plus it helps me stay off my device much more thanks to no outter display which i really effin like!!!! I love this device and i wish it had more users. But i guess not everyone can be cool and own a duo as a main phone
  • @Daniel Rubino
Any updates on when V2 will hit the market? Cause I need an update from my Blackberry Key2 and I think I waited to long to get this.
  • Unihertz are about to start their Kick Starter campaign (May) for the Titan Pocket... If your preference is a physical keyboard... :-) More likely to appear than the rumour 5G Blackberry from Onward Mobility...
  • All things Surface tends to launch/get announced either in October/November or March/April. We're still hearing the former for v2.
  • Another bare minimum effort from the Duo team (if there even is one at this point). At least it doesn't seem to have made anything worse so far.
  • Speak for yourself, but performance and reliability are much better on my end. Even small things like the auto-brightness in a dark room starting dim and not super bright is new/better now. Screen rotation is much quicker and animations actually look good.
  • You could always just stop using it. That is allowed.
  • Duo keeps disconnecting from wifi now and won't reconnect except for randomly.
  • Just got my April update for my AT&T build. Whew.
