Video Poker - Review

Looking for a simple poker game for your Windows Phone? Rick Keeney has developed Video Poker for Windows Phone 7 that puts five styles of video poker on your Windows Phone.

Along with the various styles of poker, the app will maintain your gaming stats to let you know how well your playing. There are two versions of Video Poker available. You have an ad supported free version and if you don't like the banner ads, a pay version is available for $.99.

Game Layout

When you first launch Video Poker you are taken directly to the gaming screen. Payout information is listed in the upper left and your chip count to the right. Your hand will display just beneath the payout information with hold buttons appearing beneath each card. You then have the deal button and across the bottom of the screen (with the free version) you'll find the ad banner.

Betting is set at only one chip/credit per hand and once you deal your cards, you tap the hold button to choose which cards your going to keep. After that, all you need to do is tap the "draw" button to finish your hand.

Game Styles

Video Poker had five game styles that include:

  • Jacks or Better
  • Aces and Eights
  • Deuces Wild
  • Joker Poker
  • Double Joker

To choose your gaming style, simply swipe the screen to the right and tap your game of choice.

Stats

Swipe the screen past the game choice page and you'll see your gaming statistics. Statistics include you current credits/chips, hands played, hours played, payout percentage as well as the number of hands you've won from.

Should you go broke, from the Statistics Page you can reload your credits to 100. If you want to start your stats from scratch, you can also reset them from this page.

Overall Impression

Video Poker reminded me of the classic handheld poker games but gives you more gaming styles, better graphics, and tracks your gaming performance.

I would have liked to have seen the ability to bet more than one credit/chip at a time. Betting one credit at a time gives the game a little bit of a slot machine feel to it.

Video Poker ran smoothly but lacked an addictive quality for me. It was a fun way to pass the time with but I just don't see spending more than 10-15 minutes playing it before I need to move on to something else.

Video Poker does have a free version that will let you try things out for yourself. An ad free, pay version is also available for $.99. You can find the free version here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace and the pay version is here.
