Windows Phone Game Review: Get High with Words

Get High with Words for Windows Phone

Here's a rather interesting multi-player hangman game for your Windows Phone. Get High with Words is an online turn based game of hangman where you create the hangman puzzle from a random grouping of tiles and your opponent has to solve the puzzle.

Once your opponents turn is complete, they create the hangman puzzle for you to solve. If a hangman puzzle can't be solve within the allotted guesses, you lose a life. Lose all three lives and the game is over.

The concept is very similar to other online turned based games such as Words by Post and Alpha Jax. Except you're playing a game of hangman instead of scrabble.

When you first launch Get High with Words, you'll need to register (free) to play. The main menu of Get High with Words has options to play the game, view the leaderboards, access the settings, view the about screen and log out. The log out feature allows for you to leave the game and others (friends, wife, children) to log in and check on their games.

Get High with Words settings cover the game's notifications, turning on/off game tips and turning on/off accepting game requests. You can also choose a custom balloon (represents the player on the game screen) from the settings.

There isn't a help/how to section with Get High with Words but the game tips that appear will guide you through things decently. However, these tips can get annoying so once you've read them all. When you have had your fill of the tips, you can turn them off in the settings.

In tapping the Play option from the main menu, you are sent to a gaming hub that is very similar to other online, turn based games we've seen. You have pages for games where it is your turn, your opponents turn and completed games. At the bottom of the screen you have the "+" button to start a new game, a refresh button and a button to check your messages.

You can invite specific Get High with Words members to a game or let the game find an opponent at random.

The game screen itself has the players balloons center screen with hearts along the balloon basket representing the lives. Up top are buttons to view previous used words within that particular game and to chat with your opponent. When it is your turn to create a hangman puzzle, your available letters will run across the bottom of the screen. You will have to create at least a four letter word and when done, hit the submit button.

When it is your turn to solve the puzzle, the alphabet tiles line the bottom of the screen with the blank word field just about the tiles. As you choose the right letter, the blanks are filled in. You are afforded eight wrong letter choices before you lose a life.

All in all, Get High with Words is a fun game but as with any online, turn based games the entertainment can be dampened by a slow to respond opponent (and I'm as guilty as the next for forgetting about a game). If you find an opponent who is prompt to respond, the game can be very entertaining.  If your opponent takes two days to complete their turn, the game can drag.  Fortunately, you can have more than one game of Get High with Words going at the same time to help balance things out and avoid the game getting dull.

Get High with Words is a fun game for your Windows Phone and a nice alternative to the online, turn based scrabble games.  Get High with Words is a free, ad supported game that you can find here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.
