Windows Phone Game Review: Word Puzzle

Word Puzzle

Word Puzzle is another boggle styled word game for your Windows Phone that follows in the footsteps of similar games such as Word Arena and Wordrix. Word Puzzle presents you with either a 4x4 or 5x5 grid of letters that you have to create words from.  The 4x4 grid is challenging enough but if you really want a challenge, the larger 5x5 puzzle can really be humbling.

You create words by dragging your finger from letter to letter (moving left, right, up, down or diagonally). When you're done creating the word, just lift your touch and the word is registered and you earn points.  Instead of playing simulataneously against others trying to solve the same puzzle, Word Puzzle has you competing against the clock (two minute rounds) for the highest score.

The main menu for Word Puzzle is straight-forward. You have options to play either the 4x4 or 5x5 puzzles, access the online leaderboards, access the settings, view the About screen and rate the app over at the Marketplace.  Word Puzzle's settings gives you the choice to participate on the leaderboards, turn on/off the sound and vibration, choose your dictionary and Country.

The game play screen will show your letter grid, your score, the timer, and number of words discovered. Word Puzzle also has a bonus word with each puzzle and hint (first and last letter) will be displayed at the top of the screen.  As you build words your Windows Phone will vibrate to confirm a correct word.

Once you complete your round, Word Puzzle takes you to summary screen that will display your score, reveal the bonus word and all the words possible from the grid of letters. You also have the option to submit your score to the leaderboard and create a player name. Once you submit your score, your ranking will be displayed.

To play the game again, you have to hit the back button which will send you back to the main menu.  It would have been nice to have had a way to jump right back into the game without having to go through Word Puzzle's main menu.  It would also be nice to have the ability to tap on one of the words on the scoring screen to see it outlined on the puzzle or pull up a definition of the word.

All in all, Word Puzzle is a decent word game for your Windows Phone. It lacks the bells and whistles of similar versions but it can hold it's own for those who like boggle styled word games.  I'm not the most articulate person around but it seems as though Word Puzzle's words are some of the more difficult to identify of the boggle-styled word games.  The game can be rather humbling at times.

Word Puzzle is a free, ad-supported game for your Windows Phone and you can grab it here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.
