Windows Phone Apps

Recently, an internal listing for what looks to be a Pebble synchronization app for Windows Phone was found in the Store. Pebble is one of the most prevalent and well-known smartwatches on the market, so official support for it on Windows Phone would be a big win for the platform.

Unfortunately, the evidence is mixed, at best. We'll try to explain what is going on.

Last night, WhatsApp out of the blue pushed out a semi-rare update for their popular messaging app. Unfortunately, no changelog was included, so it was left to the masses to discern what is new.

We should have caught the change, as it has been rumored for months now, but alas we have been playing with shiny, new tablets lately. The change in 2.11.670 is rather straightforward: how the messages appear in the notification center.

For the last few days, many tips have been rolling in about 6tin, Rudy Huyn's Tinder client. Huyn's apps have had a hit and miss record with some companies who's IP is involved with his creations. This is why when 6tin went missing recently, people started to fear the worst.

Luckily, in this case at least, 6tin is missing merely due to some Store problem.

Twitch is a popular website that allows players to livestream games from their computers and Xbox One or Playstation 4 consoles. Watching someone play a game on Twitch lets you see a lot more of a game than you could from a trailer or video review. Every Twitch channel offers a live chat room, making the act of watching a stream a social experience. The host (the person playing) can even speak to viewers. It's like a live interactive podcast centered around videogames!

As regular Windows Central readers know, we do plenty of Twitch streaming ourselves through my channel Twitch.tv/Eastxtwitch – four or five nights per week, in fact! It's important to us that you be able to view and enjoy our streams. Unfortunately, Twitch does not offer an official Windows Phone app and our phones can't natively play Twitch streams. Thus we must look to unofficial Twitch apps for our phones of choice.

Not all of the unofficial Twitch apps for Windows Phone are created equal. I've put the five current best apps through their paces: 8Stream, Infinite Game Stream, LiveGaming, "Twitch TV," and Unstream. Read on to learn how they compare and which app is the best in its class.

There's been a plethora of Twitter apps for Windows Phone devices, and a lot of them went packing due to Twitter's API restrictions, but here's another one, and it looks quite good. Aeries has been designed to make using Twitter easier and features a neat and intuitive UI.

I've been using a beta version of Aeries for a few weeks, and I can safely say that along with Tweetium, it is definitely one of the top Twitter apps for Windows Phone in 2015.

My Trips isn't a new app, it's been around for some time but we haven't talked much about it in recent times. But, if you're a frequent traveller it's something you should definitely look at. It hooks into the popular service, TripIt, which manages travel documents and itineraries on your behalf by pulling confirmations out of your inbox and organising them into trips for you.

Update: Reports suggest that Microsoft has plugged the Insider app. Using Fiddler to spoof Windows 10 on your unsupported device will no longer work. Although this was only one method to install Windows 10 unofficially, it was a popular one for those without an SD card.

If you're running the Windows 10 preview for phones on your device, an update for the Windows Insider app is waiting for you bringing it up to version 1.2.217.1. There's no telling what the update does, but it would be a good idea to go ahead and pull it down.
