Windows Phone Apps

Bank of America has followed through with the removal of their app from the Windows Phone and Windows Stores. In addition, the app itself no longer functions, which is a departure from the route Chase Bank is taking.

Bank of America announced at the end of January that they were discontinuing support for their Windows and Windows Phone apps due to low market penetration. As an alternative, the company has told customers that they can use the online web version on their mobile site.

Having been a staple on Windows Phone for some time now the popular music service, MixRadio, is entering into a state of transition as it goes from being a Microsoft property to one owned by Line. Having recently met with the team at Mobile World Congress we're able to confirm that the service will remain on Windows Phone, with development continuing into the future.

Oh, and a little hot off the press news: there's a private beta of a MixRadio app for iOS and Android currently in testing.

4 in 1 Fitness Pushups, Situps, Squats and Pullups is a Windows Phone fitness app that may have one of the longest titles in the genre. It is also a fitness app that will appeal to those just starting out getting into shape as well as those who have already been bitten by the fitness bug.

As you might guess, 4 in 1 Fitness focuses on four exercises, push-ups, sit-ups, squats and pull-ups. It also has a diet plan to help you count those calories. Normally priced at $5.99, 4 in 1 Fitness is also this week's myAppFree deal where you can pick the Windows Phone app up for free.

Not in the US and want to alter the language on your Microsoft Band (that you likely ordered off of eBay)? Then good news as our favorite app Pimp My Band is now in version 1.8 after numerous smaller updates over the last few weeks.

Today's addition brings the ability to switch languages, including French, German, Italian or Spanish, as well as UK or US English variants.  The feature is found near the bottom, where 'Tweaks' was introduced a few weeks ago.

Yesterday, it was announced that Weave newsreader is shutting down on March 14. The news was sudden, and at the time, no reason was publicly given. However, Windows Central has been in contact with the developer behind Weave - Arash Emami – for years now and he reached out to us with details on the decision.

First and foremost, the end of Weave is not about leaving Windows Phone. This situation is not the same as American Airlines or Bank of America. Instead, Emami is heading to work full-time at LinkedIn. As he reminds us, Seles Games – who makes Weave – was mostly a one-man show.

A few days ago, we reviewed Starbucks Locator 2.0, which is a swell little app for you coffee fiends out in the world. Sure, you could use Cortana, but there are benefits to having a dedicated app for a frequently used function, including greater functionality and, in this case, barcode scanning for your Starbucks Card.

This morning, version 2.1 has gone out and with it numerous fixes, improvements and refinements to the user experience.

Popular third-party YouTube app myTube has been updated to version 2.0.18 that introduces the ability to autoplay videos. Also included is a feature that automatically checks a user's product key upon launch, which comes in handy considering that several users were facing issues in accessing paid features of the app after the 2.0 update.

After five years the popular news reading app Weave will close down on March 14. Without providing a reason as to why the company is closing down the popular app for Windows Phone, Seles Games published a handful of tweets to thank consumers and Microsoft (as well as ourselves) for all the support the team received since 2010.

This morning The Weather Channel app for Windows Phone has hit version 1.2. Although the old changelog is still listed from the big redesign a few weeks ago, we have gone through and noticed a few alterations to the app.

One of the largest and most welcome changes is the removal of secondary locations by swiping left or right. One issue with this old method was redundancy if you only had one location the app would still show a second place to the right.

Back in January, we reported that after 14 long months, Audible (owned by Amazon) finally has an update for their audiobook app in the works. The app is extremely popular, in particular for those whose daily grind requires much quiet time. However, problems with resuming and even loading some audio titles have given the app some negative reviews.

This site WPArea.de has not only found the beta, but they have noticed that instead of the beta being closed (as intimated by the company), it is open to all. Of course, this free download may not last long, so if you are an Audible user, you may want to grab the app until the official update comes along.

Xiaomi is a pretty interesting manufacturer, in that it makes phones, software, accessories but also a ton of other items including headphones, wearables and even an air purifier. It's the wearables in focus here, though, with news surfacing of a third-party developer working on a Windows Phone companion app for the Xiaomi MiBand. The MiBand is a pretty basic fitness tracker, not close to the Microsoft Band in terms of features, but with one massive positive: its price. Officially it only supports Android and more recently, iOS, which isn't all that surprising, especially given Xiaomi's focus as an Android phone maker.

Have you heard? Universal Windows apps are the big thing for Windows and Windows Phone users. Today, we have another addition to our bucket of apps. Fedora Reader is a super quick, clean and Modern RSS feed reader from Joshua Grzybowski, the developer of Pouch, a well-received Pocket app for Windows Phone.

Fedora Reader is unlike many other RSS apps in that it looks very Windows 10 with thin fonts and new-style buttons. The app is very lightweight at less than 1 MB on the phone, launches quickly, and is easy to use.

If you do not have any RSS feeds ready, the app has a curated listed in various categories including Business, News, Entertainment, and Technology. Within each category is a predefined RSS feed that you can add. Of course, you can also add your own RSS feeds.
