Windows Phone Apps

Microsoft now has yet another Lumia Camera app in the Windows Phone Store. As if having three already wasn't enough, Lumia Camera Beta comes along for selected phones and those users of them that like to be on the bleeding edge.

This release is only for phones running the new Lumia Camera 5.0 and not older Lumias, which have had some of these features in the past. In short, Microsoft is now adding back features that are missing in Lumia Camera 5.0 through this beta.

As you'd expect, there are a few new bits and pieces included for folks trying it out, and while there are no massive changes there are a few tweaks and a few welcome new features. Here's what we know.

Metrotube has picked up an update, which is readily available on the Windows Phone Store. The latest release is only a minor bump for the app, but does address multiple issues fans of the unofficial YouTube client may be experiencing.

Version 4.6.2 fixes an issue that could prevent you from logging in, as well as addressing problems found on search pages in various languages. The changelog lists "other minor fixes", so we can assume the developer has worked tirelessly to squash all those annoyances that prevent you from enjoying a bug-free experience.

Download Metrotube for Windows Phone ($0.99)

Thanks, Mark W., for the tip!

There's some good news for you baseball fans out there: the MLB At Bat app for Windows Phone has finally been updated for the 2015 season. We previously reported that the app wouldn't be updated any longer. Shortly thereafter, the app was pulled from the Windows Phone Store and MLB began refunding paid subscriptions.

In an odd turn of events, however, MLB At Bat has made a return to the store with support for the 2015 season.

The official IMSA app for Windows Phone and Windows 8.1 recently joined us, and the good news is that it's largely a great app. The experience within is everything a fan of sports car racing could want, save for one small bug. I call it a bug because I have to hope that's what it is. While the most recent race was happening this past weekend, every 60 seconds or so the app would push out a notifcation.

If you like to drink beer (and who doesn't) then you want to grab Untappd 2.0, now live in the Windows Phone Store. The free Untappd service lets users look up beers and check-in, record ratings, upload photos, notes and sharing the information socially. Users can even earn badges or follow people for recommendations on beer.

The previous app for Windows Phone was infamously a Phone Gap app, meaning it was not actually native, but rather a port with limited functionality. This limitation seems to change with 2.0, which looks to be a native app. Even better, the Untappd developers have included a rather lengthy changelog. Let's take a look!

The news of the final demise of the HTC Sense TV app for One M8 owners should come as no surprise. We first reported on it at the end of March, and it's not exclusive to Windows Phone either since the Android version of the same app has also been discontinued. True to its word, HTC has now killed it off, but while Android M8 owners have alternatives, that doesn't look to be the case for Windows Phone M8 owners. At least not right now.

Microsoft has developed or helped develop a boat load of Windows Phone apps and games over the years and to help you get pointed in the right direction to find these titles, the Windows Phone Store has a Made by Microsoft Collection.

If you do a keyword search for "Microsoft" in the Store, you'll come up with three pages of apps and games that Microsoft has played a role in developing. The Collection pulls twenty-eight of these titles under one roof and includes a nice selection of Windows Phone titles. For this week's roundup, we will pull a handful of titles from the Made by Microsoft Collection.

If you have a favorite app or game from Microsoft that isn't mentioned, feel free to toss out your recommendation in the comments below. We understand that there are other quality apps and games from Microsoft that (for whatever reason) did not make the Collection such as Crimson Dragon, Wordament, Shuffle Party, Microsoft Health or any of the Bing apps ( Sports, Weather, Food and Drink, etc.). Please understand we are only spotlighting apps and games that are in this Collection and there is nothing afoot if your favorite isn't mentioned.
