Flipboard showdown: iOS vs Windows Phone

Flipboard is a very popular app that grabs content from several sources and presents them in a magazine format. There's a social networking aspect to as well since it lets people curate and share content as their own magazines that others can follow or subscribe to. The app has been available on iOS and Android since 2012, and you might have heard that the Windows Phone equivalent has just been released. We happen to have an iPhone 6 Plus lying around, so let's compare Flipboard running on iOS with the recently released Windows Phone app. The results may disappoint you.

Swarm is the next evolution of the Foursquare check-in phenomenon with a heavier focus on the social. Launched earlier this spring, Swarm was a little late to the Windows Phone party but at least it was always planned to get support. When Swarm finally arrived, it had quite a few bugs and usability issues out the gate, although the developers were keen on making things right.

Earlier today, version 1.1.0.2 went out to those using the app, and truth be told, the app is now hitting its stride for stability and feature parity with iOS and Android. Let us see what is new with today's latest version.

SensorCore is the technology made by Nokia in conjunction with Qualcomm to enable tracking of your location, steps, and level of activity using your Windows Phone while not killing your battery. Found on the Lumia 630, Lumia 635, Lumia 730, Lumia 735, Lumia 830, Lumia 930, and Lumia 1520, SensorCore is also open to third-party developers to make new apps that leverage the tech.

Sensie is one of those apps, and it is quite ingenious and well polished, especially being relatively new, (it first launched at the beginning of September, but received an update today). The app is designed to visualize your travels and recent activities, leveraging HERE Maps.

Update 2: Flipboard has informed us that they are working with Microsoft for a 512 MB-optimized version of the app.

Update: Users can now download the Flipboard app. It is still not available for 512 MB phones although it does have some 'flip-like' animations.

The long awaited Flipboard online news reading app for Windows Phone that's been in development for over a year and had a false start a few days ago, may finally and officially be available for download in the Windows Phone Store sometime today.

Originally, the app became available but it was later pulled from the Store due to it being a 'placeholder' version and not the official one.

Pocket Magnifier is one of those neat apps that you may not have known about for your Lumia Windows Phone. Developed in collaboration with Royal National Institute of Blind people (RNIB), Pocket Magnifier lets you use the Lumia rear camera to zoom in for text and clarity.

This morning, version 1.2 is live in the Store and with it comes the Microsoft name in front instead of Nokia's, an app trend that started a few months ago. The UI has also switched from olive green to the more familiar royal blue and the app is now Windows Phone 8.1 only.
