Windows Phone Games

MixaMonster is a relatively new Windows Phone game that is designed to help children learn about colors and what can be created when they are mixed together.

The Windows Phone children's game has you mixing colors that will transform into an interactive monster. Available for low-memory Windows Phones, MixaMonster may not be appealing to everyone but if you have young children, MixaMonster comes across as a fun, educational game for your Windows Phone Kid's Corner.

The fantastic upcoming first-person shooter Evolve is being reimagined for mobile as a match-3 Windows game called Hunters Quest, available for free today in the Windows and Windows Phone Store. As in the original, players are hunting a big, bad alien and have to work together to make sure they don't become the prey. Over time, you earn ability mastery points in the mobile title that carry over to the full-fledged console game.

Rail Heads is a Windows Phone game designed to test your reflexes and ability to plan ahead. The game has you positioning railroad tracks out ahead of a locomotive you are guiding down the tracks.

Controls are simple, game play challenging (almost to the point of frustration) and there are plenty of bobble heads to unlock and choose as your gaming character. Available for low-memory Windows Phones, Rail Heads may not be the most picturesque of games available in the Windows Phone Store but could be a decent time waster to have in your gaming library.

Back in July of last year, Microsoft announced plans to release Zoo Tycoon Friends for Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone. In addition to being an Xbox title, the game looked to fit into the growing trend of simulation and management games for mobile. Later in October, the game finally launched after some limited testing and things were looking good for the game.

Jump ahead to early 2015, and it does not take much to find complaints in the Store about the title. Reviews are littered with the same grievances, which includes the backend servers essentially not working, rendering the game (and any purchases) useless.

Today, Microsoft is throwing in the towel. In an email sent to those who are playing the game, Microsoft Studios have announced that Zoo Tycoon Friends is shutting down on April 28, 2015. Microsoft says that the closure is part of their "ebb and flow" of portfolio management, but there is little doubt that the game's constant problems likely forced their hand.

Although Microsoft only brought one Xbox One game of its own to PAX South (the highly anticipated State of Decay), our favorite company's presence mostly focused on indie games for Windows – be it PC, phone, or tablet. They called this showcase the Texas Indie Game Lounge. Games available for play in the lounge included Shroud of the Avatar for PC, Gravity Gunners (ID@Xbox), Raising Hell, the Gordian Knot, and Greeble 2.

Developer Fractal Fox's Greeble series tasks players with rescuing tiny creatures called Greebles from the gaping maw of a giant monster. Whereas the first Greeble only appeared on iOS, the sequel will launch on Windows Phone, Windows 8 and RT, Android, and iOS. I got some hands on time with the tablet versions during the show and quite enjoying the monster-tapping game play. Read on for full impressions and an exclusive hands-on video of the upcoming Greeble 2!

EvolutionMultiplayer is a Windows Phone game that tosses you in the middle of an online sci-fi battle. There isn't much to this first person shooter beyond searching the battle arena for other players to take out. You do have some character advancement as your number of kills increase but for the most part, think of it as a virtual game of paint ball but in a sci-fi setting.

The game is from the developer who brought us Masked Shooters, which is another online multiplayer shooter but less sci-fi and more military combat in mood. We received a few tips on the game and decided to see how this installment of this gaming series shook out.

EvolutionMultiplayer isn't a terrible game but, as we saw with Masked Shooters, the graphic quality really holds this game back. There is also occasional lagginess with gaming controls. EvolutionMultiplayer has potential but does need a little polishing before it can shine.

Zombie's Got a Pogo is an odd sort of an endless runner game available in the Windows Phone Store. As you would guess with the title of this Windows Phone game, you try to keep your Zombie in one piece as you guide him over various obstacles.

Simple controls, challenging game play and quality graphics helps give Zombie's Got a Pogo a nice level of appeal. The game is available for low-memory devices and while not the most feature rich Windows Phone game that features Zombies, it is a fun title to pass the time with.

Strung Along is one of the more unique platformer games that is available for Windows Phone and Windows 8 devices. You control a wooden string puppet across multiple levels of game play.

You will have to avoid obstacles and avoid over extending your puppet that will break its strings. The levels are timed, so you will need to balance speed with caution to avoid snapping your puppet's strings. The Windows Phone version is available for low-memory devices and after spending a little time with the game, it does have a bit of appeal.

Windows Central Roundup: Top Windows 8 Games

We are taking a slight change of pace for this week's roundup. Instead of focusing on apps for Windows Phone, we are going to take a look at a few of the top rated Windows games.

An HP Stream 8 tablet was left under the tree with my name on it this past Christmas. While my Windows Phone is my primary device for gaming these days, I'm finding the 8" Windows tablet can hold its own rather well. I think in many respects a tablet is more amenable to gaming than a laptop or desktop, especially when touch screen controls are in play.

I've plucked four gaming titles from the Windows Store (plus a few honorable mentions) that I have found to be nice gaming options when you need the elbowroom a tablet offers. Many of these gaming options are available for your Windows Phone and I'll add the download links with those titles for the Windows Phone Store and make not if the version is available for low-memory Windows Phones.

If you like Dungeons and Dragons styled games, the Windows Phone game Dungeoneers might be something of interest.

The game is a dungeon exploration game where you create a party of four adventurers from a handful of unique classes . Dungeoneers has tons of monsters to defeat, plenty of gold to fill your pouches and a few treasure chests to plunder. The game is available for low-memory devices and while I enjoyed playing Dungeoneers, it may take you a little time to get used to the interface and dark graphics.

While there are a variety of endless runners available today, Subway Surfers was one of the first games that got the genre going. The game is updated on a regular basis, with every update bringing a different location and a new theme. This time around, it's Seoul, and although the game highlighted the city before, this update features a different theme.

Goblins! Problems! is a Windows Phone game where you are tasked with battling wave after wave of goblins. You hack and slash your way through an endless number of these wicked creatures, earning gold along the way.

Goblins! has an RPG feel with upgradeable character traits and specialized attacks. The graphics aren't too shabby and while I don't know if I could spend the afternoon playing Goblins! Problems!, it might not be a bad option when you need help passing shorter bits of time. The game is available for low-memory Windows Phones.

Frederic - Evil Strikes Back is a sequel installment to the original Windows Phone game Frederic. The game has the legendary composer Frederic Chopin being resurrected from the grave to prove that his music can still be a chart topper.

Evil Strikes Back picks up where the original left off with Frederic facing a host of opponents in musical duels. The game does have a Guitar Hero feel about it but instead of battling it out on a 6 String, you are armed with a piano keyboard.

Available for low-memory Windows Phones, Frederic - Evil Strikes Back is normally priced at $4.99. However, as this week's myAppFree deal you can pick up the Windows Phone game free!

Update: Microsoft clarified in a statement to The Guardian that none of Mojang's servers were compromised, meaning that the leaked passwords and usernames were the result of an unrelated hack.

"We can confirm that no Mojang.net service was compromised and that normal industry procedures for dealing with situations like this were put in place to reset passwords for the small number of affected accounts."

"When we discover lists of gamertags, usernames and passwords posted online, we take immediate action to protect our customers by reviewing for valid credentials and resetting account access when necessary."

Microsoft's statements will no doubt reassure users concerned about the safety of their accounts.

Pigment Puzzle is a Windows Phone game that is heavily inspired by the Rubik's Cube puzzle that first surfaced in 1980.

Instead of dealing with a three-dimensional combination puzzle, Pigment Puzzle has you solving a one dimensional combination puzzle. The game has three puzzle sizes and four color schemes to keep you challenged.

Available for low-memory Windows Phones, Pigment Puzzle can be a little frustrating at times but overall, it is an appealing puzzle title for your Windows Phone gaming library.
