Nokia Lumia 1020 (EOS)

The Nokia Lumia 1020 is Nokia’s follow up to their 2012 PureView 808 Symbian device, which featured a new 41MP camera sensor. The Lumia 1020 takes that same technology and merges it with the Lumia 920’s optical image stabilization (OIS) and Windows Phone 8 to bring mobile photography to a new level. The combination of technologies should ensure high resolution, sharp and blur free photos.

The device features a 4.5-inch AMOLED screen, 32GB of internal memory (no expansion), 2GB of RAM and a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon CPU. The phone is nearly identical to the Lumia 920 except it omits built-in Wireless charging (Qi) in order to make the device thinner.

In addition to the device itself, an optional wireless charging backplate and a separate camera grip are available to enhance the device.

AT&T is expected to launch the device in the US at the end of July, 2013 for $299 on contract, with a European launch coming shortly thereafter. It will launch with the GDR2 OS and Amber updates.

Review: BodyGuardz Armor for Lumia 1020

I've never been a huge fan of stick-on skins for devices. I've got nothing against them, but I never found much use for them. The ones I had were, usually, the transparent ones that offered minimal protection and ended up turning brown after a couple of weeks of fraternizing with dirt and pocket lint.

The BodyGuardz Armor for the Lumia 1020 brings a little more to the table though. It is a cross between a protective film and decorative skin.

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to see one of my favorite bands Rise Against. Not only did I have tickets, but also, I splurged for the pricey balcony seats to have an excellent view. For this show, I wanted to watch them unobstructed and just take it in, as opposed to the floor (you will see why).

Which phone to take to the show? Although the Lumia 1520 is still my top phone now, the Lumia 1020's 41 MP camera cannot be denied, especially for video. You see, with the PureView cameras, not only can you record excellent video, but also with your finger on the display, you can zoom in and out like a real video camera. Try that on the iPhone.

Curious as to the result? Here is a sample video.

Arguably the best camera phone of any platform, the AT&T Lumia 1020 is now priced at just $339 at the Microsoft Store and at Amazon, and the beauty of the pricing is that you don't need to sign any two-year agreements for the 41-megapixel PureView smartphone, which can run the Windows Phone 8.1 operating system after a firmware update.

WPCentral member, WillemC, has a dilemma. Perhaps you can help him out. He's been using the Nokia Lumia 1020 for about a year and now has an opportunity to trade it for a brand new Nokia Lumia 930 with his co-worker. Should he upgrade to the newer device or stick with the imaging monster, Lumia 1020? A few forum members have voiced in their opinions already. What do you think?

It is just after 1PM Eastern Time, which means new OS updates are rolling out for those on Windows Phone. Today, we are getting many reports that the Lumia Cyan and Windows Phone 8.1 update is going out for those with a Lumia 1020 on AT&T (and presumably a few others worldwide).

As mentioned previously, if you are using the Preview for Developers program and are already on Windows Phone 8.1 or 8.1 Update, you will not get an update notification today as the hold is still in place for the Cyan update. Instead, you need to use the Nokia Recovery tool to roll back to Windows Phone 8.0. (In some instances, the 8.1 and Cyan update is already on Nokia's servers, so instead of downgrading, you can just flash the device with the update.)

Microsoft is pushing out more Lumia Cyan updates going for some Lumia 520, Lumia 920 and Lumia 1020 owners. This morning we reported on a few countries and carriers, but at the time, we were working from a partial list, mostly based on tips.

We have now gone through fully and detailed the update by country and region.
