When it comes to GPS navigation apps, everyone has their favorite for various reasons. Whether it is prior experience, preferred UI, or unique features, not all nav apps are equal. This morning, CoPilot GPS, a titan in the field of GPS navigation, has announced their new Premium series of apps for Windows Phone, including one for the US and another for Europe.

Currently, CoPilot has their free app on the Store, which receives regular updates. Although free, the app has in-app purchases that unlock premium features with a lifelong license. Now, the Premium versions offer a paid version upfront, but on a lower cost and yearly basis. As a result, you do not need to fork over nearly as much money to use the app.

GPS navigation apps are like Twitter apps: we all have our favorite for various reasons, and one of the more popular ones out there is CoPilot from ALK Technologies. Version 9.6 has gone live in the Store today, and it brings along with it quite a few new features, including a commuter function and some voice-commands.

We managed to get our hands on the full changelog, so let's see what's new!

While many of you opt for Nokia’s free HERE Drive, which just received a nice update this morning, some of us opt for more powerful apps like CoPilot from ALK Technologies. Put simply, third party apps may cost money, but they often feature more options and tech that make it worthy for the true road warrior. CoPilot for Windows Phone 8 arrived back in June and maintains a healthy 4 out of 5 stars on the Store for reviews.

This morning, version 9.5 has gone live in the Store and brings along with it a host of new features. We of course have the full scoop of all the changes, so read on if you’re curious.

We first saw CoPilot GPS for Windows Phone 8 back at Mobile World Congress. Over the last few weeks, the app entered into final testing and tonight, the app is finally available for download.

The popular navigation app brings yet-another solid choice to Windows Phone users who are looking for a concrete driving solution. Truth be told, we’ve been using the app for a few weeks now and have been quite impressed with its bold graphics, traffic integration (we really like the traffic bar to the right), voice navigation (yes, some of the voices even announce street names) and overall “smartness” of the app, including a ton of various configurations.

As we promised earlier, we have a hands on demo of the new CoPilot Navigation app coming soon to Windows Phone 8.

The version you see here is in “demo mode” but we checked out ourselves and the software is quite nice. There’s not a Live Tile yet but CoPilot seemed jazzed about what they could do with it, meaning you can expect that feature to come in a later update.

Head past the break to see the video and read our earlier article on CoPilot’s history and their exciting return to the Microsoft ecosystem.

Today, ALK Technology, the company behind the popular CoPilot sat-nav apps for iOS and Android has announced support for Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 (x86), bringing both paid and free apps to the platform in the coming weeks.

For those who don’t remember, CoPilot goes way back with Microsoft having integrated the first GPS system in a Windows laptop and even selling Pocket CoPilot for PocketPC. In other words, this sat-nav owes a lot of its legacy to Microsoft’s systems all the way up to Windows Mobile 6.5 (Flashback: Our CoPilot 8 review from 2009).

The company backed away from Windows Phone 7 though instead concentrating on iOS and Android. Part of the problem was also their complaint about managed code being difficult to work with for their system. Of course with such a complaint one would expect them to jump back in as soon as native code access was granted and sure enough, they have today.

Review: Copilot Live 8

There are some pretty cool technologies involved in the hardware that is being crammed into our Windows Phones these days. WiFi, various cellular technologies, GPS, et al. My vote for the coolest of these is GPS. The fact that some very intelligent person somewhere came up with the idea of putting machines into orbit around the globe and then using these to navigate is extremely impressive to me.

Harnessing the full power of the GPS on a Windows Phone can be a difficult proposition. Free tools such as Google Maps and Bing/Live Search are capable of utilizing a GPS receiver, but they don’t give you all of the benefits that we have come to expect from a full featured GPS.

Copilot Live is one of the premier GPS applications for Windows Phones. Now in version 8, ALK Solutions has re-worked their pricing to make this amazing software accessible to just about anyone with a Windows Phone. (See my review of Copilot 7 here.)

To see the new features that Copilot Live 8 offers, check out the review after the jump.
