Sonos

Back in December, we reported that Sonos (Sonos.com), who makes wireless home stereo equipment that connects up to third party media services, was in development of a Windows Phone app.

Now, the link for that app has been found. Interestingly, if you browse the Store listing on the web, the date for the last update is back in October. However, navigating to the link on your phone and it will tell you that the last update came at the end of January, including adding support for Windows Phone 8.1.

When it comes to streaming music wirelessly from your house, Sonos (Sonos.com) is the go-to brand for speakers and hubs. While other wireless systems are just Bluetooth streamers from your phone, Sonos can play music from Pandora, Spotify, Deezer, Songza, and a dozen more services to multiple speakers all at your control.

No official Sonos app for Windows Phone is available today, but reports have been circulating for some time that the company was considering making one. Indeed, back in March the company was measuring interest – and feature requests – for such an app were they ever to make one. (Additionally, ex-Microsoftie Marc Whitten also works for the company now).

Sonos (www.sonos.com) is a pretty wild service. Not to be confused with Songza, which also works on Sonos (and is just as awesome), Sonos is a ‘Multi-Room Music System’ and it relies on HIFI-WIFI speakers placed throughout your abode. You can then stream music to all or just some of your speakers, using various sources like Songza, Pandora, Amazon Cloud Player, Beats Music etc.

There’s also a familiar story here: on Android and iOS, users get free software to control their Sonos Zones at home. Windows 8 and Windows Phone? Not so much.

We have received a note from the developer of Phonos that the recently updated Sonos controller app, Phonos is now on a half price sale in the Windows Phone Store.

If you are a Windows Phone user then you’ll likely already know that Sonos have abstained from making a controller app to work with their multi-room entertainment system for the platform. Phonos has been around for a while and we have reviewed it previously, it is now on a promotion offer until the end of the year.

The Sonos multi-room streaming music system is probably my favourite piece of musical gadgetry right now. I listen to a lot of music and it's often a pain to keep plugging in my phone or mp3 player into a system in each room. It took me plenty of deliberation, but eventually I succumbed to buying a few bits of the Sonos kit. Now I could have music playing throughout my small apartment. "Wonderful," I thought, until I realised there isn’t an official Sonos app for Windows Phone. Luckily, I found Phonos in the marketplace. How well does it stack up against the competition and of course the official offering from Sonos? Read on to find out..
