Anniversary Preview cumulative update build 14393.5 now available

If you read our review this morning of Windows 10 for PC you will know we are the final stages before next week's release of the Anniversary Update. Microsoft is now doing a lot of hot-fixes for the OS a new cumulative update is rolling out to Insiders.

If on PC, you can now download KB3176927. Insiders on Windows 10 Mobile also get a direct cumulative update. Both patches will bump the OS to Windows 10 build 14393.5. Seeing as these are patches they are comparatively small updates for both systems.

Here is what is fixed according to the Feedback Hub announcement:

  • We have improved reliability and performance of Microsoft Edge with AdBlock and LastPass extensions enabled. These extensions should continue to work after installing other extension updates from the Store.
  • We fixed an issue causing battery to drain due to runaway CPU processes while a device is idle. We also fixed a battery life issue due to the proximity sensor always running on some devices.
  • We fixed an issue causing Store apps to stop launching due to a licensing issue.
  • We have fixed an issue that results in Windows Updates being delayed on systems with Connected Standby.
  • We fixed an issue where the Korean IME would not have the correct composition on some custom TSF3 edit controls on PC.
  • We fixed an issue where you might not be able to type in text into Search or some Store apps without having to restart the process.
  • We have fixed an issue where keyboard input on some Windows tablet devices would not rotate to landscape normally.

Thanks, Alberto P., for the tip!

  • Downloading now....
  • It should be noted that only those on Fast Ring are currently getting this. I have it on Slow Ring and nothing to download.
  • Really wish they would note that in the title or at least in the articles. It is kind of important for us on the slow ring.
  • Why? Since when does the slow ring get updates as fast as the fast ring or even faster as the fast ring? The title explains it all. Or you want it to mention too that it is about Windows, not Mac?
  • hopefully fixes the "no internet" bug... otherwise, pretty nice on my 930
  • Yes this no internet bug is really annoying.
  • I didn't have this bug until recent 3-4 builds on 1520
  • Ditto
  • Me too
  • I often need to reboot my phone due this the "no internet" bug. As recent as 90 min ago (L830).
  • Just toggle wifi, it'll work.
  • That's what I do. No reboot needed.
  • Time to go home and update my Toshiba Encore 2 to get this update as well as my Lumia 640XL.☺
  • If I hop on the fast ring and then back to production I'll just get whatever update is pushed for anniversary right? I want to update but I'm not into being an insider for Redstone 2 lol Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • I believe so. My understanding is that it will always update going forward, just not be able to go back without refreshing. (I hope my understanding is right - going back to production on or about the 1st)
  • Technically correct. But it is worth noting that this is not guaranteed since insider builds can break things. That being said, it is a low probability that this would happen at this point of development for Redstone 1. If you want to get Redstone earlier than 2nd of August, you can get the current insider build and its updates. It will be the same as the one released on 2nd of august.
  • You are right. Good PSA... anything can happen.
  • I need to remember to remove my 950 from the Insider Preview after the Anniversary Update is released as well. The initial Redstone builds were bad and I forgot to remove myself, which lead to a lot of headaches and my phone nearly being tossed out the window a few times.
  • Good point. Maybe slow ring will be useful again?
  • these builds have been so bad I will never go on the fast ring again.  It was alpha nightmareware
  • They have been much better than w10th2 was initially and has felt quite complete since mid may.
  • I have been getting awesome battery life on my 950 since the last couple builds. The battery is discharging at 1.5%/hour.
  • +1. Found these RS1 builds very stable for a while now. Occasional hiccup but nothing that resulted in a huge swearing outburst. Gabe, Dona and the 'small' mobile team deserve a huge pat on the back. They've managed to pull a rabbit out of the hat in the face of adversity.
  • Apart from screen brightness issue, (the screen drops to very dark and brightness toggle doesn't change it- needing reboot to be able to see screen) I would say it is pretty slick on my Lumia 950 xl.
  • Yeah, that started happening yo me in .3
  • How do you go on production ring? I only see slow and fast as options in dropdown.
  • If you're on laptop/Desktop, there will be a small link somewhere on the screen saying "Stop Insider Builds". If on mobile... That's confusing as there is supposed to be "Production" option..
  • set all your devices to Release Preview
  • You can do to production ring only when the production build and the insider build is the same. It will happen on 2/8.
  • Yes you can jump to fast ring, update to latest build then switch back to production. Fast ring right now will bring you to the update most closest to the anniversary update (as now they're just pushing the small patches here and there), and switching back to production will bring your phone back onto the normal update flight from there onwards (Redstone 2 will probably be pushed to fast ring about a week (maybe) after anniversary update, so I'd say as long as you switch to production the day before the anniversary day (just in case they push a RS2 build on the same day, which is unlikely, but just to be on safe side) you'll be safe from Redstone 2 builds in the future :)
  • hey thanks for the heads up! downloading now. surprisingly since the 14393 builds i havent had the wifi bug anymore and bluetooth works fine, and i havent used the wprt app to install the new firmware (u.s. dual sim lumia 950 xl).
  • I also noticed that the WiFi bug was gone after 393.3. I wonder if issue was resolved without fw update being required and if it was software issue all along? Either, happy its fixed.
  • I HAVE the WiFi bug on my 950XL, on 14393.3, on the latest firmware.
  • this will fix it?
    or Hard Reset?
    or the Hammer Reset?
  • We'll see.
  • It's a known issue in the release notes for 14393, they're investigating.
  • Hmmm didn't realise. I personally haven't had it since 393.3 and it used to be quite frequent with all of my known access points stating "no internet". Let's see anyhow.
  • Just to make sure: When you say the latest firmware, do you mean the latest from wdrt? The latest haven't need releases to over the air update yet and it supposed to fix WiFi issues.
  • Yes the one from the WRT that had WiFi connectivity fixes amongst other fixes Inc in the update.
  • My 950xl has never suffered the WiFi bug. Bluetooth is a different matter..... Hopefully, at some point, I'll get the firmware update and it may improve the connection issue.
  • Same here, mine wad fine until the build before .393 but the patch for .393 seems to have fixed it. It wasn't really a deal breaking bug it was more annoying because when my WiFi was in the "no internet" state, my device wouldn't automatically use mobile data as its been configured to... Anyway, install .393.5 so hopefully more stability.
  • Just fyi, the build number is 14393, not .393. Mine started some builds before, on 14379 I think.
  • Kool re build number. I think mine started around 379 too or which ever build was the Anniversary bug bash build.
  • Yeah I also saw my wifi issue disappear after the most recent update.
  • I think "this is not my experience" is a silly reason to downvote someone's comment. (I say this not to TK but whoever downvoted him/her.
  • Have you had any issues with notifications not working when screen is off?
  • Nope. All notifications appear on glance screen with sounds and vibrate.
  • The last several builds have been nice. I don't want to have to hard reset my phone to get Cortana working again. I've been without "Hey Cortana" for some time, now. Otherwise, I've been enjoying the recent builds.
  • Roll back to 8.1, assuming you can, train Hey Cortana, update to current build and Hey Cortana works. But do not perform a hard reset otherwise you will lose the training settings and Hey Cortana won't work. I do not understand why but it works. I had to do this to my L1520 after some research and Hey Cortana is back. Of course set your region and language settings to match. Hope it works for you too. The only irritating part for me is mp4 videos are not playing even the ones recorded using the phones camera.
  • Thanks for the advice.
  • I notice they've stopped quoting the build number in the cumulative updates and they install so quickly too :¬)
  • Cumulative updates never had build numbers in their title.
  • oh! we have a build update for store.
  • 6 days left until August 2nd I wonder if they'll fix the bugs in time ( on Windows 10 Mobile ) or if its going to be "Threshold 2" story all over again?
  • As 10 Mobile isn't their primary focus, don't be surprised if they don't (cue lots of impatient whiners, unable to see the bigger picture) :¬)
  • the whiners are impatiently downvoting you to death!
  • I have Nadella buoyancy aids, I'll float..
  • downvotes dont mean he is wrong. they have made it good enough for august 2nd release though, i dont see no bugs at all. using L1520
  • Indeed, my 1520 is working great but my 950XL has problems with wifi, apps like ring opening really slow or not at all bit so far really happy with mobile and how it starts to be.... I did not receive the latest firmware yet so my issues might be resolved be resolved with that firmware update when it comes over the air @T-Mobile in NY Area
  • How is the battery life on your Lumia 1520? This is something I need to know, we have too many people speaking negative about the update on there phone.
  • To be honest I cant give a full opinion about that since ot is not my daily driver but charge it once every two days so no complaints for my 1520. Not sure how it will behave if I use it as my 950 XL though which just makes it through my workday (use it a lot though)
  • The L1520 is a headache to use and start screen crashes, wifi disconnects it work nice as clothes iron as it get so warm with loads of other issues and with no end insight I do hope someone at MS prevents this build from being released to the public.
  • NONE of those issues on my two devices, I have the red att one with some scrolling issues but my yellow cv is awesome. Think you have to start from scratch
  • 8.1 Devices can be quirky. I have found that the Dr. Windows Update protocol works best, no flaws with a 640DS. Before I did it, it sometimes crashed the camera app, other apps, etc. Now it works like a charm. WDRT to perform a complete return to 8.1 Do NOT install any Backup Update the phone, if Updates are available (still only 8.1 Updates!!) Install the Upgrade Advisor App Update to W10, DON'T install backups, .107 or so will be installed. No updates! Make a Hard reset Again install NO Backups Update the phone to the current version, or go to the insider rings.
  • I guess you rolled back to bare bones? My 1520 used to keep my hands warm, but after rolling back and *not* restoring, she is a cracking device again. Speed wise, its almost, and I mean almost, as good as 8.1. Still a great device!! Come on MS, update the 1520!!! Yay!!
  • Wait for the final build and do an hard reset. One of my friend had those problem with a 930. They are now gone and everything works well.
  • If it's the poor relation to desktop, why are we being hammered with builds and cummulative updates for the past couple of weeks. For something *not* important, they seem to be investing quite a bit of time and effort, albeit from a small team. First party devices aren't a priority at the moment, but the OS is developing at a fair rate of knots. RS1 has taken a fraction of the time TH took. I understand what you are trying to say, but MS's focus for mobile is on developing the OS for enterprise. It's no longer the 'oddball' OS we all know and love to hate, it now *feels* grown up and most definitely aimed at enterprise. Secondly, after years of **** ups, missed opportunity, crazy buyouts' and releasing more devices than people to buy them, something has had to give. Maybe they should have used bing to predict the future like football results. After all of what has happened, its a miracle that MS have gotten OEM's on board, and building devices. Given the right conditions, from small acorns, mighty oak trees grow. Let's just hope MS remember to water them ;-)
  • A quick question: What happens when the final version releases next week? Should we go for a fresh install or we can just continue and we won't be an insider anymore?
  • Continue and then un-enroll if you want. We'll have an article soon.
  • So basically we're having the final version currently. Right?
  • Yes. You are just getting now what comes out next week.
  • Awesome!
  • i sincerly hope it's not the final version, 950 xl has tons of problems :(
  • do you seriously think that the bug fixing is going to stop at the RTM/Final?
    10.0.10586 dot what number? 494
  • Such as? It's got a few glitches but not tonnes. Firmware can fix them. But still waiting for the DTTW firmware here in UK.
  • Not had enough problems on mine to exit the insider builds. It's been very good for past 2 or 3 builds. DONT get me started on the FW update!! The 950 euro CV has had it for a while now! Do you reckon they've forgotten to press the button?? ;-)
  • Thanks I was going to ask
  • Un-enroll for a while... back to Slow Ring after 1st Slow Ring build's released... and back to Fast Ring after that.
  • Insider program will continue for the RS2!!!
++ for the clean install, for mobile I suggest hard reset after getting the AU, for pc\tablet not necessarily
  • I am enrolled on fast ring in my L930and thinking about hard-reseting to check about battery improvements.
  • If battery drain is your only concern, check which app is causing the drain using and may be uninstall them and see if there is any improvement. Also after any new update, it may take 2 to 3 days for the device to settle down and only then you'll come to know about the battery performance. It is possible for new bugs to impact your device after a hard reset. So do a factory reset only if you have multiple bugs on you mobile.
  • W10M got it too
  • I am soooooo close to enrolling my Dual Sim Lumia 950 XL into the Fast Ring to get in on the RS1 goodness. I'm still reeling from the issues I had when I couldn't send text messages a few builds ago and had to reset my phone via the Recovery tool. Now I am holding on to the TH2 just because I don't want to lose my progress in Arcane Soul. This week up until the release of the Anniversary Update seems to be true test of patience. I mostly want the improved Messaging app, emoji, better notifications, Skype UWP, Microsoft Wallet, improved Microsoft Edge, Panorama in Windows Camera, improved Continuum and Ethernet support. I have a 1520 in the Fast Ring but the phone seems too big now for daily use after using the 950 XL and and my 830 and 640 in the Fast Ring are just too underpowered for the games that I play on my phone. I guess I'll be waiting until the official release. Why did I have to put so much time into a game that doesn't have cloud backup... :(
  • I already installed it on my 640XL. It works great. There few very little bugs that I think will be resolved. For example I noticed when I was on a call, no matter carrier call or VoIP, Groove was not paused and just mute the song while it was still continue to play in background. I reported this and two more issues, hoping the problems would be resolved. Anyway I am really satisfied, especially of the new Skype.
  • The update is working wonderfully on my 1520 but the Lumia 950 XL Dual Sim has historically had issues that haven't affected single sim devices. I keep thinking, this close to the release of the Anniversary Update, surely the major bugs have been fixed but I keep getting conflicting reports, from "Yes, rock solid, no major issues" to "CODE RED CODE RED!!! DO NOT INSTALL!!! (exaggeration)" I guess I have a decision to make. To be or not to be before next week, that is the question.
  • You won't lose your progress methinks. I do believe all data is stored on mobile
  • Unfortunately, Arcane Soul doesn't show in the "Choose which apps to back up" list. I don't believe the developer (real developer or hacker) has enabled cloud backup via OneDrive or any other method, such as Facebook.
  • you're forever stucked in the Threshold ...
  • LOL
  • i'd steer clear of the fast ring, 950xl is as buggy as hell, edge, gadgets app, typing, glance screen on charge, none work correctly :(
  • only your phone ...
  • Disagree. All those problems once but not now. Accuracy of wordflow is my only gripe.
  • The only thing I dont like on the glance screen is no charging battery icon. Yes, glance stays on when charging, but the little icon was handy for a ermmm....quick glance..
  • I wouldn't do it if you need Mobile Hotspot tethering. It's currently broken on mine.
  • Transfer the game to an sd card
  • downloading..........
  • So hoping the battery fixes apply to m Lumia 1520...  Installing now..
  • A very fast cumulative update for the PC version on a Surface Book -- less than three minutes to download, prepare and restart on command. The Phone installs (930 and 950XL) are taking a little longer -- semi-quick download, slow prep process. There's time for one more round of bug fixes before the release next Tuesday, but except for some Xbox builds there is nothing in the internal pipeline according to buildfeed.net.
  • Yes, it is only 16MB.
  • It is available on phone now as well.
  • I have an issue on 640 with fast ring. When making calls, loudspeaker is turn on by itself and it keeps turn on when I try to turn it off.Anybody facing that issue.?
  • There's a new option in Phone settings where speaker phone is turned on automatically based on proximity sensor status. It's a nice convenience feature but I wonder if you have that enabled somehow.
  • What is that feature called.? I hope u r not talking about audio routing?
  • It's under System->Phone->audio routing. I enabled it myself but it was disabled by default for me. Your symptom sounds as if that feature is enabled or gone haywire.
  • That ain't new.
  • Downloading on my 950 now...
  • I've noticed since build 14390 that the apps library in the app store doesn't show any of my apps. No problem with TH2. The problem exists on 950XL DS and a 1520. I don't think the problem exists when upgrading from TH2 to RS1, I did a hard reset on both phones once updated from TH2. Does anyone have this problem?
  • maybe servers? :/ or you chose by accident hide all?
  • It doesn't show the apps the first time but if you try it again it shows up
  • Different store.
  • good i hope battery life is better i mean 14390 was awesome but 14393 ruined it :P hope it goes back to how 14390 was :D
  • In the last 2 weeks, It's happened 3 times, that my messaging, phone and outlook app gets reset suddenly. Everything gets deleted. I've given feedback about this but I don't know what's causing this issue.
It happened again as I updated my phone to the new build.
    Anyone facing the same?
  • Lost messages a few times but they always trickle back eventually.
  • It may irrelevant here but is it only me or anyone else facing issue with fast charging. It not working after one of the build updates.
  • Switch off yr phone. Plug in the charger, the phone will reboot and fast charging should be working as intended. I faced the same pblm before.
  • Off topic, but it's funny how Google can make it's Google Play music app a universal UWP app but won't make an official YouTube app to gain more users. They suck and I love MyTube!
  • Google didn't make the client, it's a third party app here! :D
  • Ask yourself what they make money from.
  • What app
  • Tubecast is a much better Youtube client than any official YouTube app
  • Waiting for 2 Aug...thou not far for my surface pro 4 and Lumia 950...can i add 2 accounts on my surface pro 4 Soo things sync between Lumia 950 and surface pro 4
  • Yess
  • Go away cat
  • Realeased for mobile too... downloading now
  • Still no fupping double tap to wake :-(
  • Phone firmware, not o/s.
  • That comes from firmware. I think everyone is assuming it will come with the official AT&T Anniversary rollout.
  • Not sure if it's a bug, or it was removed, but the music volume adjuster isn't there after unlocking my 640. I'm not using the hardware key every time I want to adjust.
  • Weren't you calling "cumulative updates" production updates?
  • This build is getting my phone hot. Anyone else?
  • My Icon was warm for about 30 minutes after the update then settled down.
  • how's your icon's battery performance?
  • My icon's battery is draining as quickly as that one, awful build. I lost 15% in 30 minutes.
  • Just by using my battery is better than the last build, no official comparison but Facebook and messenger do not drain the battery as bad plus my icon barely gets warm.. Happy with this build on mine
  • thank you (:
  • My 930 (same as Icon) did get hot after update but it always does that. Had it on charging too. Now after about 1hr it has cooled down. Battery drain is really significantly less va. TH2 and also my 930 also does not get really hot occasionally anymore. Very happy with this build.
  • thank you very much
  • Not working on my 950DS or my AT&T 830 both on 10.0.14393.0 any Idea's USA
  • Fixed 393.0 turned off insider preview so if you not getting the update check your inder settings! Happy now
  • Waiting for the official ISO for a clean install, I'm still on TH2.
  • Windows Central crashed two times on my L950, while I was going through these comments. Fast ring updated to .5
  • Been playing with this new build on my dual sim 950 for about 30 minutes and it seems a little faster (if that's possible)? I haven't noticed the wifi drop in a few days and my 2nd sim seems to stay connected. I will also drop down to the slow or production release on August 3rd since this is my everyday phone. I am still WAY more optimistic about win 10 mobile then anyone I know...I think over the next 18 months win 10 mobile can capture alot of the old Windows phone, business & blackberry users with continuum, they just need to get the word out. {Start Me UP!!!} ...Microsoft!
  • Call recording for phones other than x50s?
