AT&T is finally rolling out the Windows Phone 8.1 Denim update for its Lumia 830

It's been a day that AT&T customers that still own a Lumia 830 thought would never arrive. Yet today, the carrier has confirmed that it has indeed started rolling out an update for the Windows Phone device, It brings the long-awaited update to Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2, or Denim, for the Lumia 830, along with a "Find my Phone with Reset Protection" feature.
The download size is about 540MB. In addition to email tips from Windows Central readers, members of our forums have also reported seeing the update as well. If you have a Lumia 830 on AT&T, be aware it may take a few days for the Denim update to show up on your smartphone.
Do you need some assistance in getting your Windows Phone OS updated? If so, we got you covered with our how-to article on that very subject.

Gr8 And too l8
-
Right? I sold my 830 for a 930, then that for a 1520, got a 1020 again, got married, became a father, got three college degrees, bought a house, saved the president from ninjas, and got a Lumia 640 in the time between us being told 830 would get denim and the real release of denim on the 830... (...sad to say: the only exaggeration there was the bad dudes reference)
-
Lol.. Nice one bro hahaha
-
Ugh... AT&T... ummm... i don't know if you noticed but... WM10 has 1 foot out the door...
-
It's on time! By AT&T time.
-
Yeah, but W10M requires this version to be upgraded. Sorry about my english. Greetings. :)
-
I think that's actually kind of crappy news...if they didn't release it, that would've meant that they were most likely going to go straight to Windows 10 as soon as that comes out. Now 830 users will have to wait forever for the Windows 10 update. That's how I see it at least
-
I'm not sure how many 830 owners will wait for AT&T to offically release W10M, but I won't be waiting on them.
-
You could always levege the Windows Insider app to go to WP10 now if you like. This will allow you to bypass the carrier and get your updates from Microsoft directly.
-
Not seeing Denim update here and after 6 PM.
-
Works on My Phone (tm)
-
Yeah, but at least now I have the firmware to properly drive the camera. I can always put Win10mo on the phone via insiders. I couldn't get the firmware via insiders. Hopefully with Win10mo there won't need to be a firmware update, and AT&T will promptly update all their Windows Phones. To me, it seems the carrier being in the update process would be a huge burden that they should be happy to offload to MS.
-
and now that lumia camera wil finally work, my autofocus has stopped working. rendering the update now pointless.
-
Denim was required for W10. I take this as good news. It means ATT is willing to play ball.
-
You can load W10 on Cyan devices. Posted via the Note 4/Nexus 7 (2013)/Lumia 1020/Lumia 2520
-
Really sad thing is recovery tool has had it for a while
-
AT&T is not going to push W10 to any current devices. You're setting yourself up for massive pain if you expect the too. Be glad you got the final Denim firmware and load the Insider OS when it gets a bit more stable. That's all you'll get. Posted via the Note 4/Nexus 7 (2013)/Lumia 1020/Lumia 2520
-
Well Win 10 Mobile seems "carrier" independent. That is the idea behind it to skip carrier approval . Could mean the rollout will get triggered to every WIndows 8.1 Denim phone - just like the Insider upgrade does
-
That ship has sailed....
-
Premier partners....what a laugh.
-
I'm at work and audibly laughed at this. What a pile of stupid.
-
Aw, don't say that about yourself. We all make mistakes, I'm sure nobody at your job even noticed you weren't working either... ;p
-
Shut up retard
-
Man, who pushed you down in the mud today?
-
Didn't know my time machine was working...
-
Hahaha...this is so efin Hilarious (insert sarcasm here)!...Carriers are so archaic! Their old way of control and thinking just holds us back! I say there needs to be a shift in our paradigm! Not just with carriers but with outdated, progress hindering corporate models such as this!...
-
Well, since MS keep saying that we need Denim Update to upgrade to Windows 10. This is a good news.
-
Yeah I don't really get the negative comments about this. I would imagine AT&T has a pretty good idea when MS will be done with W10M so they know when they have to start testing their bloatware. So they reached the point where they release this so the phones can be upgraded. I'm still not waiting though. I have an 830 as a spare phone, and I'm getting an unlocked 950xl. Might even give Cricket a try.
-
Is that actually the case? If so, I wasn't aware, and would retract my comment
-
Yes, though the AT&T 830 shipped with "Denim". But it was only Denim in name, not in function. MS was never really clear if name only Denim qualified as Denim for the purposes of Win10Mo upgradability.
-
Yeah, but will you learn from it...lol
-
Haha, way to edit your comment. And I still haven't learned anything. Just people claiming that you need Denim to upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile. Searching for it, I haven't found anything (other than the article I posted below)
-
http://www.winbeta.org/news/lumia-denim-not-requirement-upgrade-windows-... Just found this... It is from February, but I assume it's still the case.
-
A lot can be missed in 140 characters. Demin may not be a requirment for the phone to get the update, but that doesn't mean Denim isn't a required part of the process. Installs going from 8.1 to 10 may have Denim installed as Denim is a firmware update. Basically, I take his tweet to mean, "no, you do not need Denim to spgrade to Windows 10. We will install any needed Firmware updates automatically."
-
Considering the Insider Program is the only way to get W10, your not getting firmware with it. That's OS only. Posted via the Note 4/Nexus 7 (2013)/Lumia 1020/Lumia 2520
-
Yeap. I still think it's a OS path, as we already saw with Win10 build, there's some upgrade path.Probably 8.1.XXXXX to 10.XXXX
-
wait so its actually gdr2? isnt that a step above denim?
-
That's what i thought as well, but i just checked back. GDR2 doesn't have a new firmware, GDR1 had Denim (that's true). 640 and 640 XL came with GDR2, then later MS said they'll only update 735 and 830 to GDR2. Also, the 830 came with GDR1 and Denim, but not the "proper" Denim. So apparently AT&T released proper Denim with GDR2, so this is a 2in1 update to be able to install W10M on their 830's (even tho GDR2 is not a must, only Denim is).
-
FINALLY! AT&T took long enough! Owners of the Lumia 830 who are on AT&T will be happy.
-
Forget at&t my Nokia Lumia 925is yet to receive 8.1update 2 -_-
-
Just looked, seems there are still quite a few AT&T phones that don't have Denim (most that doave Denim don't have 8.1u2): 925, 920, 820, 520 http://www.microsoft.com/en/mobile/support/software-update/lumia-software-availability-in-north-america/?country=US,United States Of America FWIW, that page still doesn't even have a listing for the AT&T 830.
-
Nor does it list the 810, still on Amber.
-
Oh, that T-Mo Buuuurn... =p
-
my 920 and 520 have fake denim after updating using DP, there deosnt seem to be a benefit for either phone to have real denim
-
It's not even fake Denim. The Preview/Insider programs will not change firmware. It's purely OS. Posted via the Note 4/Nexus 7 (2013)/Lumia 1020/Lumia 2520
-
I know, but it changes the extras info to say denim and not cyan
-
Still nothing for 920 though, at least officially.
-
What many people don't realize is that this is just "prepping" the phone for Windows 10. You must have the Denim update in order to upgrade to Windows 10 later. This means AT&T is planning on doing the Windows 10 upgrade later. THAT is big news.
-
Really? You have too much faith in AT&T. Lol. Posted via the Note 4/Nexus 7 (2013)/Lumia 1020/Lumia 2520
-
I bet he's right, I bet its part of the new deal MS made with ATT that all the decent phones get proper denim for the upgrade to 10
-
Cool, I'll update when I get home
-
This is one of the reasons I am buying the 950xl from Microsoft unlocked.
-
If you can believe MS, with Win10Mo it shouldn't matter if you get it from AT&T, as MS will be the arbiters of software update releases.
-
Big if.
-
They won't it seems. https://www.thurrott.com/mobile/windows-phone/6889/microsoft-will-not-by...
-
It looks like the carrier can test the update and report bugs, but MS will still have the authority to push the update. Some of the comments on that article make the point that if a carrier chooses to not test it, MS could still release it on it's own.
-
Thurrott misquoted that. The article he references even states that Microsoft will be in control of the updates, and if you look at the full quote from Microsoft on that other site he references, you'll see he conveniently clipped out the important parts to make it possible to post a click-bait title. I've stopped following Thurrott for many reasons over the past months.
-
They never said that.
-
Microsoft can't bypass carriers. https://www.thurrott.com/mobile/windows-phone/6889/microsoft-will-not-by...

Original story May 16th: "Microsoft will bypass carriers, push Windows 10 updates direcly to phones" http://www.pcworld.com/article/2923085/microsoft-will-bypass-carriers-push-windows-10-updates-directly-to-phones.html Story yesterday: "Here’s how Windows 10 Mobile updates will work" http://www.pcworld.com/article/2992182/windows-phone-os/here-s-how-windows-10-mobile-updates-will-work.html
-
Carrier-locked phones cannot bypass the Carriers. It's their version of DRM to prevent loopholes where you buy a phone on contract and sell it. I'm not sure how that profit process would work, but whatever. But essentially, contract phones are not your property until the end of the contract. That's why you paid an early termination fee. It is also why all the carriers have moved on to a loan model. Unlocked phones are treated the same as the Surface: it's a Windows device that just happens to have LTE. So unlocked devices can recieve updates from Microsoft with no carrier involvement. Microsoft will still involve carrier where firmware is involved because having Windows Mobile take down ATT would be bad PR for both.
-
Carrier locking in no way impacts the ability of a manufacturer to push updates. It's the contract that the carrier has with the manufacturer that impacts that. Carrier locking only prevents you from putting the phone on another carrier. With Windows 10, carriers have to agree to Microsoft's terms or they aren't allowed to carry it.
-
Software updates have nothing to do with the SIM locked status of a phone. Just take a look at all the Android ROMs. Rooting and flashing a new ROM doesn't SIM unlock the phone. I believe a SIM lock is enforced in the hardware of the phone. If you put in incorrect unlock codes enough times, you can permanently disable the ability to SIM unlock your phone. In other words, you could get all updates direct from MS with no carrier intervention at all, and your phone could still be SIM locked to AT&T.
-
Knowing ATT, I am positive they'll strip out a feature or three and put branding in/on the phone. Totally getting unlocked from now on.
-
I wonder if it's the same build that was released then pulled a while back. The same one that is in this forum tutorial.
-
Based on OS version, firmware version, and build creation date, it's the same as that WPRT leak.
-
The update also appears to be available via the WPRT. (again?/Still?) Same F/W build number as was tracked in the forum tutorial
-
Yeah I noticed this as well.
-
And no news for Lumia 920 :(
-
I don't think Denim is capable of adding anything new to that great legacy device.
-
Rich Capture for photos is one thing it adds. Believe me, that alone is worth the trouble to update. Also, it makes it possible to get the update for Windows 10 Mobile.
-
Well the 920 got a "critical small update" after which extras+info shows it's running on denim. Plus all windows phones will apparently get rich capture as it's supposed to be part of the camera app in wp10.
-
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!!!!!
-
This is a carriers version of supporting Windows. And for some reason, this is the only carrier selling a new windows device.
-
Yet the other carriers are even worse, so they are still somewhat the best US carrier to release a phone on.
-
That's really not saying much for the US carriers overall lol.
-
Do I have to roll back to get it or should I gt the firmware with 10536 installed?
-
Yes.
-
If you're on W10, you'll have to roll back.
-
Awesome news! I flashed mine a few weeks ago with the WPRT leak, and it does improve the camera speed. I wonder if I roll back, will I need to install this "approved" ROM? Now I can get my wife's 830 updated properly.
-
What about the 920 owners????????
-
Denim is already available for that phone. If you meant GDR2, it's unlikely that it'll be released for the 920, as Windows 10 will be released soon.
-
honestly surprised, but I jumped on the Denim train when it was accidentally pushed via WPRT
-
Me too. I flashed it a few weeks back using the instructions in the forums. No issues really but not really impressed with the update either. I wonder if this firmware version is different or improves on anything.
-
Denim was never meant to offer much for the older devices. It was only a big deal on the 830 because it was announced having features that the camera could only use with Denim firmware and it never got them. Denim was more important for the 1520 and Icon. Posted via the Note 4/Nexus 7 (2013)/Lumia 1020/Lumia 2520
-
The biggest thing I noticed was improved camera speed.
-
About time. I was actually going to put my Lumia 830 on Windows 10 Mobile this weekend though.
-
Update to denim first. then W10M once your on the inside rings you wont get 8.1 or Firmware updates.
-
No I meant I'm no longer updating to Windows 10 Mobile. I already have a test device running Windows 10 Mobile. I was going to put my Lumia 830 on Windows 10 Mobile because I feared it would not get it on its own. This is a sign that it will in fact get it so I'll wait for RTM and enjoy Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 Lumia Denim for now (just now finished installing).
-
Yeah, I wouldn't. The 830 will run 8.1 much better. W10 doesn't really offer much yet. Posted via the Note 4/Nexus 7 (2013)/Lumia 1020/Lumia 2520
-
My phone (635 GoPhone) is still on Cyan.
-
Mine too. Would like the GDR2 software without using the insider program. The Denim firmware doesn't add anything for us sadly.
-
If you flash a Go Phone to the post paid rom, you'll get denim and 8.2 which does give you the equalizer.
-
Yup. Denim won't give you anything. Just get the newest 8.1 build and be happy. :p Posted via the Note 4/Nexus 7 (2013)/Lumia 1020/Lumia 2520
-
This is good news because the non-tech non-Windows Central population will get a better phone experience and be ready for W10M. You guys keep thinking of yourselves, you selfish fanboys.
-
2112!
-
I know it's advantageous to roll beck WP10 to get the firmware update from AT&T as we cannot get the firmware any other way.. However, what a load of crock from AT&T. They made it perfectly clear the 830s were not getting any updates. So working from that knowledge I upgraded my phone to W10 and am very happy I did so. Now this crap from AT&T! So frustrating!!
-
actually, they didn't make it clear at all (the story here about AT&T not updating it was based on 1 BBB report, which proved pointless as various others recieved different news from different AT&T BBB responders) If you followed the thread in the forum, you would see that AT&T gave 3-4 different excuses... from "No update", to "we are actively working on it" to "Microsoft hasn't handed over the code" to "we're looking into it" and 1 person, who went for arbitration instead of the BBB was told "within the next 30 days" well, today is a week or 2 late based on that excuse, but it's out.
-
These ^%#$ing Carriers man! I really hope what microsoft plans to do is show the carriers their insider update data for the devices on their network having no problems with the latest build and then push the updates out on their timeline.
-
Isnt this update needed for WM10 so they had to release the update.
-
Ya think this might have something to do with the 950? Gee, who didn't see this one coming!
-
Curious why at&t releases it only now.
-
for anyone on an AT&T 830, this means NetFlix now WORKS, as does Lumia Camera 5 (RAW PICS!!!)
-
I am upgrading now. I too need to know this. Just this morning I bought Inside out and tried to play it on the Video app with the same message as when I try to play Netflix. So frustrating!
-
well, my previously purchased (and imported via disney anywhere) movies play fine (just tried monsters inc right now) so i would assume it would work fine.
-
How do you get Disney movies on WP? I've got my account linked with Vudu, but they don't have a WP app.
-
They added support for Microsoft Accounts a couple of weeks ago. Log on to your disney account and link your MS account there. Movies then show up in Movies & TV app. Works great.
-
Thanks for the heads up. I linked it to my Amazon, Microsoft, and Google accounts in addition to my Vudu account. It'd sure be nice if Amazon linked with UV.
-
Thanks for the refresher man! I had completely forgotten about Netflix, just to clarify, the Lumica Camera 5 app is the Lumia Camera Beta correct? Version number of that is now 5.4.xxx and I guess to shoot in RAW, you pick the 8MB JPG + 8MB DNG? Also some people have said you can now shoot in 4K but the option isn't available in the Lumia Camera 5 app.
-
the 830 doesn't have the horsepower for 4K
-
I guess its great news then that MS has decided that they will be the ones to push updates to handsets from now on. What a huge slap in the face by AT&T to have never pushed the update thru. Smh.
-
This is the US provider that MS is putting all their faith in?
-
Unfortunately yes, since AT&t is the best GSM carrier here in the US and MS does not want to kiss Verizon's ass anymore and make them CDMA phone versions that Verizon will never push to sell. Can't win either way!
-
What a joke! Better late than never I guess. I flashed my AT&T 830 to full Denim & Update 2 a few weeks back using the rom and instructions here: http://forums.windowscentral.com/nokia-lumia-830/383877-how-flash-att-lumia-830-rm-983-8-1-update-2-proper-denim.html Anyone know if this official firmware version is different or if AT&T finally fixed the Network+ and Call Waiting issue?
-
All signs point to it being the same build (same OS, firmware, build date). Some people have call forwarding working, others it still doesn't work. I'm in the process of installing now, and I'll report if I have issues.
-
Cool thanks.
-
network+ and call+ both freak out and won't let me change call forwarding settings. Though, those never worked right before either. I'm on Cricket, so not sure if that makes a difference.
-
This is a breakthrough. I'm excited!
-
Welcome to the year 2013/2014
I guess Windows 10 Mobile will be available at the end of next year which is unacceptable. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android because it's superior to the Windows Phone one -
Awesome! Just in time for me to throw this piece of junk away and get a 950!

Finally!

After 6pm here and not seeing it.

Seems slower yet.

Updated all 830s, though took a while to indicate update available. Settings is different. Lumia camera is now on v5 Looking forward to better pics and W10.
-
ATT have their style in ruining any promotion to Windows phone. It is a good step that Microsoft would carry future updates via its servers.
-
Better late than never, although it was REALLY LATE.... I think 8.2 is a great OS.

And the 810 is amber

And the ATT 920, 925, 1020, 620,...verizon 928....etc. All have been dropped. >:\

And with that... Netflix works now!!!

wait... what???

it's been mentioned multiple times... yes, netflix will work now.

If only the 920 would finally get Denim
