Popular panorama app Cycloramic jumps from iOS to Windows Phone

Every once in a while even we miss an app that has crossed the iPhone barrier to Windows Phone. Back in mid-December, Cycloramic evidently arrived for Windows Phone 8.1 devices, although it was just brought to our attention last night.

Cycloramic (Cycloramic.com) started back in 2012 as a panoramic app for the iPhone 5. Pano apps are a dime a dozen these days, but Cycloramic was the one that danced. It worked by ingeniously placing the iPhone 5 standing up, and it would vibrate the phone to spin around slowly, snapping pictures along the way.

Since 2012, Cycloramic has grown to the iPhone 6, which of course, cannot "stand" anymore. Instead, the has gone back to the more traditional "guided" system, which lets users create relatively long panoramas.

Cycloramic is now on Windows Phone, which is a small win for the platform (Android does not yet have a version).

The Windows Phone Cycloramic is free to use, and it is rather straightforward: launch the app, hit the camera button and guide the phone (vertically) across a plane from left to right. Once completed, tap the camera button again to stitch the image.

Oddly, the app does not seem to save photos to the Camera Roll, so do not go looking for them. Instead, Cycloramic appears to save images within its own storage, which is odd for Windows Phone users. To see the latest image that you took, it is on the main page of the app at the top. Tapping it brings up the image where you can use the universal Share picker or edit the photo using built-in filters.

We had no issues running it on our Lumia 930 (with Denim), and Lumia 1520 (with Cyan) and the app is interesting. The stitching works quite well, and it is not too slow. Although nothing amazing, Cycloramic is rather quick to use, which is a selling point.

However, there are many negative reviews too of the app on the Store. For instance, you need a gyroscope for Cycloramic to work properly (this is how it guides you, after all), so some Windows Phones cannot use this app. Others report green screens and general app-to-camera issues, suggesting some optimization is needed for some phones. Your mileage may vary, but luckily it costs nothing to download and try the app.

In the end, Cycloramic appears to be a decent panorama app. Currently, Lumia users only have the Lumia Panorama app (the last update was in September) and Microsoft's Photosynth. HTC owners have a beautiful panorama app direct from HTC. If some of the bugs can be worked out, Cycloramic may be a solid choice for those looking for something a bit different.

Update: Cycloramic informed us that an update will be out today with new features and the ability to save to the camera roll. Stay tuned!

Thanks, @TheRomit, for the tip!

  • Damn right, but then, how Lumia Panorama works on Lumia 520 (or HTC 8X) without a gyroscope?
  • I got the same message with a 620, even if it has a gyroscope...
  • +1320 doesn't support
  • Same here with 630
  • My 720 too??
  • 1320, can't install this app as it says it does not have gyroscope :(
  • You have a notification, please. Read it.
  • No I don't..
  • Is always nice to see when some app is coming from IOS/Lagdroid to us. Downloading !
  • The question is how does this stack up against Lumia Panorama?
I'm not complaining, the more the merrier if it will help WP
I just prefer quality over quantity to an extent. ^^
  • Same question, however it's very welcome to see more apps coming to the store
  • Please keep in mind that not everybody has a "Lumia" that can download Lumia Panorama.
  • use photosynth :')
  • About bloody time! :) I have been waiting years for a decent panorama app...
  • Photosynth for me has been lovely

I believe using a separate folder might be the default fir the universal app sdk.
  • "I believe using a separate folder might be the default fir the universal app sdk."
Which would be fine if there was a separate folder, lol. I didn't see one.
  • Hi Daniel may I know which all phones got the gyroscope?
  • Awesomeness
  • Smh... My 1320 doesn't have gyroscope.. Wtf
  • Doesn't work on Samsung ATIV S - and yes, it has a gyroscope.  Stick with PhotoSynth.
  • Thanks for this. I have been using both Lumia Panorama and Microsoft Photosynth, each has its pros and cons, but this latest offering is definitely faster to use, and I like how the image is immediately accessible within the app rather than having to look for it.
  • Installing this, deleting Lumia panorama
  • This super hot girl I worked with brought this app to my attention when it was only on iPhone and I joked about how much better it wouild be when it arrived on Windows phone. This would've made a great excuse to go talk to her. Too bad she quit. The app gap is now affecting my love life
  • lol
  • hahaha..
  • Hahahahahahahaha
  • well ...shit . I tried it on my 925 and it nearly bricked it . I had to soft reset so proceed with caution oh  it doesn't have a lens
  • True!!!! I downloaded this few mins ago, after using it the first time, the 920 shut off, waited a few mins then it was reset, the date was changed. Uninstalled.
  • Hate to be "that guy", but what's the HTC panorama app called? Or store link? I can't find it on my HTC 8XT.
  • HTC Camera -> Panorama
  • No panorama default app for our HTC 8X.
  • I accidentally deleted my HTC Camera app a while back and can't redownload it... Can you go to HTC Camera app on your app list and 'Share', so you can post the store link here please?
  • Nothing on my 8X either. It's prolly just for the 8XT and M8.
  • It says this app uses features my 8XT doesn't have. Can't download it...
  • Doesn't work on htc8x
  • HTC Camera app -> Panorama
  • Don't try this at home!!! After instalation, I tried to create panorama, app crashed and this http://1drv.ms/1Bv5XcP is what happen, when you try to take a picture in another app. Had to soft reset phone. L820
  • Not available for L625 users. Bummed.
  • Froze my 925. Uninstalled.
  • same here, and mak all the othr camera apps unusable. uninstalling
  • error message when I try to capture image then the app close's back to it's home screen...... Nokia Lumia 1520
  • Green screen L920 :/
  • same here lumia 925
  • Crashes on my ativ s all the time :(
  • Lumia 928 with Denim - Crashed the first time I tried to take a pic, had to reboot to access any camera functions on phone (green screen).
  • Yeah quite annoying how we haven't had a decent panorama app in the store for everyone. Photosynth does more but sometimes a simple panorama would do. Now the question is, does the final stitched image have higher quality than photosynth?
  • if everyone bothered to read all the 1 star reviews in the app store for this program they would know all about the crashes and green screens
  • Green screen for cam app after installing and using. Had to restart the phone. Don't download, its sucks for now.
  • Yep, happened on my phone too. Even when opening regular camera app. Scared me.
  • Why always left to right?
Why always in a circle? I want to move myself horizontally. Any app do that?
  • Photosynth
  • Can only let me spin. I don't want to pivot I want to walk sideways. Make a 32:9 pic or more... And I don't want to be on my PC to make sure the pics I took worked or not.
  • Doesn't vibrate spin phone for 360 panorama :(
  • Shark tank!!!
  • I like these iOS exclusives that jump to WP before jumping to Android. Say what you will about it, but the best app devs and designers are still the ones that develop primarily on iOS.
  • What thing could the phone miss to be unable to use this app? I have gyro.
  • Thanks! I can't complain. Photosynth was the only choice I had as an Ativ S user.
  • Sigh, error when capturing. Back to Photosynth.
  • Fixed! App needs to be installed to phone storage instead of SD card.
  • Lumia 1520 (and most WP models) don't have a flat bottom for the vibration rotate gimmick. Only useful for iPhone 4/5. Lame.
  • They made it work for the iPhone 6... So your argument is invalid...
  • Nothing for 1320 in Egypt
  • Downloaded it even though im not into panoramic photos. Glad something like that is happening to WP
  • More
  • Is it better than Lumia Panorama?
  • lumia panorama is next to useless! - see my comment below! :)
  • I use Lumia Panorama and it works well :))
  • I'll give this a go. honestly, the lumia panorama app is useless if there is any 'noise' in the picture, such as say, i dont know.. any body of water!! hello!! nokia!! wth?
  • No gyroscope on l720?
    Wth
  • crash apps . it restart my 1020 hmmm
  • interesting and fast.....(1520 dp) unfortunately the exposures were all over the place- frame banding panorama got it first time... a bit more effort but a perfect outcome. Meh... I am sure they will tweak it and then it will be fine too.
  • I still don't get it. What does this do better or more than Lumia Panorama?
  • We need the app Fyuse. It's an awesome animated picture app kinda like Lumia Cinemagraph, but instead you move your phone camera around whatever you're trying to capture and the app turns it into a 3D image of sorts. I really dig it. Wish I could use it on my Windowsphone
  • We're winning already, aren't we?
  • Gyroscope isn't in my phone too.. What now... Any solution
  • use panorama its better for now.
  • I don't have a Gyroscope it says. ~ Lumia 625.
  • No focus and blurry images! #Lumia930
  • Anything will be better than lumia panorama
  • Nokia's original panorama app is kuta no need to 3rd party.
  • It says this app uses features my 8XT doesn't have. Can't download it..
  • missed the 512-MB not supported banner in the article?
  • This app made my phone (L820) turn off O.o
  • Great. Hope it's s good (working) app.
  • This app has features your phone doesn't have? Pfff... What a joke!
