Internet Explorer on the desktop now shows Bing search bar on new tab page

Did you install all your updates today on Windows 8.1 for Patch Tuesday? Then you might notice the new tab page looking a little bit different in Internet Explorer. The new tab page now displays a Bing search box right above your frequently visited web pages.

Download all the updates you see waiting for you in Windows Update. Install them and restart your PC to notice the new Bing search box in the new tab page within IE. This is for desktop Internet Explorer, not the touch friendly version.

What do you think of the subtle change? Will you use it to search Bing or continue to just type in the address bar?

Thanks for the heads up everyone!

  • Google Chrome much?
  • Who cares about google chrome.
  • What is a google chrome?
  • I believe he (and the other Scroogle slaves) meant to say this: "We must obey, Big Brother(Scroogle) says that we CAN trust him, we MUST OBEY blindly!!! I must use Scroogle's browser, Big Brother MUST know EVERYTHING about US..."
  • You got a point!
  • You should care when MS start copying Google Chrome
  • And I care when Google is copying the design language from Microsoft.
  • Nobody cares
  • Yeah, no one SHOULD care what browser, search engine, phone, computer, console, etc you use. But it seems everyone rages at things they don't like. I love WP, Android, and iPhone, I've used all, and think each has their pros and cons. Same with computers, web browsers, search engines, you name it. The point I'm trying to make is no one should care if this guy said this, and it's true, no need to bash. It is excellent that IE brought this. Like when Bing brought the calculator in the search, that was cool, even though they didn't do it first.
  • Except he's a tool for being off topic to do his little shout out.
  • Exactly what I always say! Thanks!
  • Amen to that bro.
  • Yes, no one should care what that individual stated but it was his comment and he is allowed that - even if it was only meant to be snide and snarky instead of being constructive. WP and Mobile Nations, thumbs down, personally. But that is me. It may have been excellent for micr$sft to have added that bing search option to the new tab page but they crammed it in our face, using the top 1/2 of the page. I would rather have 'MY' favorite squares at the top half...  On top of sticking that bing search in there, they gave us no option to remove it... If people want bing, they know how to make it a favorite and a default, at least many people do. The addition of that bing search as a default first thing you see on the page, well, that kind of ticked off a lot of us, especially as they do not give us a choice. Bad move.
  • I googled "how to get rid of bing on Windows Frequent page" and got to here.  Thank you, goose fryye!   You've already wrote what I was thinking.  wth!   I want it GONE.  Really "bad move".. it makes me hate it more.
  • Actually, people do care.  Sorry but a lot of folks really do get tired of people who only want to make snide and snarky comments about something - even if it ticks us off.
  • You can borrow so long as you implement it better :) Google knows that, that is why Android L is trying so hard to go flat and modern :) which I love btw.
  • Technically.. Chrome, IE and Firefox borrowed the frequent sites, and search from new tab from Opera. But hey! No pointing fingers or anything!
  • Opera let you define your favourites yourself instead of most frequent, which often isn't much use. And synced across all devices! Then they "googled up" their browser and screwed it up royally...! :-(
  • ... lol really?
  • Why is it important that Microsoft does what it does???(the past two years)... Fighting on all battlegrounds.. And doing pretty good (the past two years) right?? They woke up.... FINALLY!! BING IS THE HEART OF YOUR MACHINE... People should see bing everywhere, just like you see Google everywhere.. Once people really use Bing as their daily driver they understand. I really like Bing and using it made me like it a lot, simple as that... GO Bing!!!
  • Well.... some people like bing, some like other search engines for various reasons.  This should however, have been a choice, not forced on us to see that every time we open up a new browser - they should have put in an option to keep that 'new' option or to remove it...
  • If i wanted bing search bar, i would have my home page go to some kind of search engine page.  I loved exploerer's tabs page because it didn't have a search bar.  Yah, why can't i remove it.  i better find some other option.
  • But you can. See this link --I didn't like the Bing search bar either:-) I googled it and easy instructions here worked: http://www.askvg.com/how-to-remove-search-box-from-new-tab-page-in-internet-explorer/
  • But you can remove the Bing Search bar, after googling I found this very easy short tutorial on how to do so! http://www.askvg.com/how-to-remove-search-box-from-new-tab-page-in-internet-explorer/
  • I don't see why people can't just move their mouse to the address bar and search what they want. All browsers have it on just one giant bar. Safari, Chrome, and IE does this, afaik.
  • Lol many ppl don't even know abt it.,, using chrome/ie but to search will type www.google.com and search
  • Ikr?
  • Lol, yeah it is pretty shocking.
  • I get pissed of everytime i see bing forced in my face
  • Yep, a lot of my colleagues feel the same way - this should have been a choice to add that or remove it instead of having to have that everytime one opens a new tab....  branding that is going too far.
  • I'm on w7 and IE sucks so I use google chrome instead
  • Does not apply to windows 10, i guess.
  • Yeah, sadly :P Hopefully soon.

  • It will in the near future.
  • We should get IE12 in Win10 soon.. no reason to update 11
  • My home page is bing.com
  • So is mine but when you open a new tab it doesnt open to Bing.com
  • For me it always opens bing.com but sadly the bing rewards is not available outside US
  • And I have collected 122 (only) rewards but I am from India. The sad part is that I don't get to redeem them and Bing thinks that I am not a registered bing rewards member. Sent from somewhere. Don't worry I ain't illegal.
  • Use VPN that is located in USA or buy a azure (azure europe uses americas internet). ps. I tried thru azure and was able to register, however, I didn't redeem it. And I have 40~ points.
  • That's an option in settings I believe.
  • Fix that in "internet options" then in the general section click "tabs"  then in the middle where it says "when a new tab is opened"  click the pull down and choose "your first home page"
  • What does the fox say. Bing Bing binga Bing.
  • LOL
  • Why did I just laugh at that? ^▽^
  • Lol
  • LoL!!!
  • I like it. Works for me, I use #Bing exclusively. #Google bites. Don't get #Scroogled #ILoveMyWindowsPhone
  • Bing Power!!
  • #hashtagsdon'tworkhere ;P
  • This. Charter high jacks the address bar search. This will work wonders.
  • I forgot about that. What even gives Charter the right to do such a thing?
  • use opendns https://support.opendns.com/entries/37540324-Windows-8-Configuration Charter can't redirect the search
  • #stopwiththegayhashtags
  • Refrain from homophobic slurs, please.
  • Now even the word gay is supposedly a slur?
  • Well yeah, seeing as I assume he didn't find them happy.
  • But he might. Or he might have been hit on by hashtags of the same gender. Either way, and in all reality, I doubt he used the word 'gay' as a slur against ... well, gay people.
  • Hopefully there's settings and a group policy to customize this, for those who want something other than Bing. I actually use about:tabs as my home page and 75% of the time I click Bing anyway so this will be a time saver for me.
  • I've never heard of anyone use about:tabs for there homepage.
  • I do too. It shows your frequented websites and it's more helpful than Bing as home as omni searchbox makes it redundant.
  • I use that
  • He might as well use "about:inPrivate" as his home page....#Pornhub
  • I use about:blank so that NOTHING needs to load. I hate waiting. :)
  • I do as well. So convenient
  • WTF is that avatar? Lol.
  • The 12th Doctor from the Doctor Who episode The Day of the Doctor Posted via the Windows Phone Central App for Android
  • It's supposed to change with your default search provider...
  • Sadly I have to (reinstall)reindex my wsus database to get any updates
  • But do you get rewards points using it from this new tabbed feature?
  • Finally!
  • I'll just type in the address bar, but it's still nice to get updates
  • Charter hijacks my address bar search. Glad they did this.
  • Have you tried cleaning malwares?
  • I use the touch friendly version...
  • +Lenovo yoga 2 duo 11 & +HP envy g6 (I know it's old)
  • No, I'm using it without a touch screen... People usually just complain about things without trying them
  • My new tabs currently open to bing.com. You're telling me now I can use the new tab page AND have the bing search bar??! I can have my page and bing it too! ;)
  • I don't get why the change as Bing is already my homepage.
What would be ideal would be the option for Bing to remember all my web history (not limited to search history) like Google does.
  • Your browser is already doing that. Google is only doing that so they can target you with more ads
  • I guess they have to try and promove (or shove) Bing in any way they can. That said...it doesn't affect me. I don't use IE anyway.
  • Opera?
  • Whatever function IE11 on Windows should be availabe on WP8.1.1. IE11 on wp ia very slow & browsing https websites takes ages to load & more frustratingly? Crashed!!! Lucky i have another phone on Android OS. Ms shld do more if they want to be competitive in the market. If no change of os by December, I will abandon WP fr good n switch back to Android.
  • Cool story, bro.
  • Why Mods don't block him?
He is writing the same shit all the time
  • He's ODD. No offence to those who are.
  • ODD or whtever u wanna call me dude?? Its ur rights. No one can stop u LOL!!!.
  • Double M... Hv u been following my posts? Then thk YOU!!! LoL!!! They wont block me dude as Im talking wt honesty & based on my real experience. Say whatever u wanna say... Say shit on me or bla bla bla... Thts ur rights... LoL!!! It's only a phone,fr God sake dude...
  • Totally agree with you denis76
  • Thx...
  • Did a side by side test with my 925 and an Android with similar specs phone and guess which browser was faster? Internet explorer. Stop trolling dude.
  • Tested... Android wins... No offence... I hv two phones. Thx fr highlighting.
  • Cool I have an Android that's slow and buggy on everything and anything, more expensive than my Windows Phone too...
  • So??? Good fr u to know tht.. LoL
  • I don't believe you've ever touched a Windows Phone.
  • ...seeing is believing LoL!!! Touch & owned r two different things... I owned it... Heeheehee... Urmmmm? Do u owned one? Naaaah!!! I don't believe it either... :-P
  • I would like to pin my frequently visited sites permanently ( like speed dials ) on that page.
  • Beautiful.  I'll need to check that out when I get home but I like what they did with the new MSN pages. Its flat out beautiful Access to my Onedrive, Office 365, right there if I need it. Nice update.

  • I installed all the updates but i don't see the searchbar above the frequent in the new tab page.
  • I'm not seeing it either.
  • Me neither. Is this US only?
  • Never mind, I figured it out. Your default search provider has to be Bing in order for Bing search to appear on the new tab page. Maybe Google with support it someday (yeah, right).
  • I like the idea, but why so much space around it? It's kinda annoying to have to scroll to see my recent tabs...
  • I want to turn off the Bing in New Tab feature solely because the above reason. Waste of a click inside the new tab and a short scroll to get to recent tabs closed.
  • Pero....eso hace rato me aparecía así. My home page is Bing !!
  • Yeah, this is something about Google Chrome that I never particularly liked. Bing is my New Tab page.
  • Updated :) sadly my apps from Store doesn't update sometime now :(
  • Mine crashed no matter what I do. Only one metro app worked to re install. Only a few apps start.
  • Love ie explorer
  • Well it sounds like Internet Explorer Explorer.
  • I updated both my Windows 8.1 pc's (laptop 8.1 & desktop 8.1 Pro w/Media Center) today and I'm not seeing this in IE 11 on neither one. Not on the desktop IE or modern IE.
  • Nice!
  • I'll use this feature! I'm waiting it long-long time. Already waiting for button that will show some live tiles (tabs) with saved websites.
  • I hate it... So much empty space at the top and the shit I want to see is pushed all the way to bottom. Just like MS, breaking things that ain't broke and not fixing those that are.
  • Bing sucks even in usa i think. Outdated search interface and really bad returned results even when you search about microsoft owned products. I really want to avoid gg but just have no chance.
  • FINALLY!
  • Will the next version of IE support extensions?
  • Highly unlikely. Microsoft has spoken often against extensions. It's something that has been requested for years. They stubbornly continue to refuse to add them.
  • They support plug-ins I think. Like they have an AdBlock Plus plug-in on IE, but it works differently and is missing a lot a features compared to the Chrome, Firefox, and Safari versions.
  • Rumors are that it will: http://www.neowin.net/news/internet-explorer-12-ui-overhaul-is-a-blend-of-chrome-and-firefox-adds-extension-support http://www.zdnet.com/how-the-next-version-of-ie-codenamed-spartan-might-support-extensions-7000033685/
  • I'll just keep using the address bar
  • Same. I personally find this change redundant and hideous. It still takes you to the address bar once you type, there's a LOT of white space, and absolutely no margin padding for the bottom links. It's pushed "Reopen closed tabs" etc down to the very bottom where it's now touching the taskbar. I just hope there's a way to turn it off!
  • A copy from Google Chrome Anyways can we change default search engine ?
  • 1st - it's a copy from Opera...
2nd - can you change the default search engine in Chrome to Bing?
  • Yes, you can.
  • Yes . You can
  • Supposedly, yes
  • I hope I can disable this, it's a wasted space for my laptop. I don't even use this dedicated Search bar on Firefox and Chrome, Addressbar/Omnibar search is quite powerful enough to do almost all searching needs.
For now I'm downloading the updates.
  • I'm sick and tired of using IE and getting judged and laughed at . Fuck those jerks IE is awesome!
  • Indeed
  • Guys, Have you tried Google chrome windows 8 version? It's pretty cool.
  • Nope. I'm anti-Google.
  • Just needs a redesign :) and better start page with shortcuts we chose.
  • And where is that nice wallpaper?! :)
  • Is there a way to disable this feature until MS decides to optimize the space used?
  • I just updated IE and yeah it's really bad on laptops and other small screen PC's. There is too much white space that I have to scroll for other New Tab options at the bottom. Another thing there is nothing special about the dedicated Search bar, when you type on it the search just go back to Addressbar. This is total unecessary.
There should be at least an option to disable this.
  • I hate android but i love Chrome...
  • Metro IE and all apps have completely crashed on my W8 computer. Only Desktop works now.
  • All I want is adblock for IE and it will then be my daily driver!!
  • You can just use the privacy filters and it works well enough. Settings > Manage Add Ons > Tracking Protection > Add EasyList
  • and don't add "Stop Google Tracking" or you will not be able to see Youtube videos.
  • Holly sh... I've got 600MB of updates! Including Office 365 stuff...
  • So.. "We" use Windows 10 to get the things first, but 8.1 gets the updates of IE first?  -_-
  • You use Windows 10 becuase YOU WANT. these updates are for OFFICIAL products, not an alpha product like Windows 10... also, Windows 10 will have IE12 or whatever is called. so it;s not even going to be IE11 like.   do you know Tehnical preview is for enterprise to test it out? and then for people to send feedback? I don't know where you got you would get "things first" but you are using the preview the wrong way and you need to learn to have a difference between an ALPHA product and an official released Windows 8.1 with IE11.
  • IE 11 is best nd better that your chrome
  • on windows 8 not on 7.
  • Not really... Depending on the bit of the OS & specs of ur laptop/pc...
  • Grt..thnks Microsoft...finally..my home page Is Bing.com love u Bing....
  • What Is google and chrome
  • Hate buggy android
  • If google gv u one fr FREE... Wld u reject it? LoL... Ok... Understood...
  • On IE11 Technical Preview nothing.
  • It's copied from Opera.
  • Microsoft has a habbit of making things redundant. This is one of them.
  • Kind of redundant
  • Quite confusing for the non tech user. They start typing and the cursor suddenly goes in the address bar. They might think it's a sick joke from msft.
  • Ouch, I just noticed it .. not good.
  • Big dilema here.. on one side I like this new feature. It makes it fast and easy to do a search. On the other, I love being surprices by Bing's "Today's Homepage"... And then it hit me how to solve my "problem". For Homepage: www.bing.com When opening a new tab: Open new Tabs page Briliant! :)
  • You know what I can't open IE on my laptop since I upgraded to windows technical preview... Why is that? I'm forced to use chrome or Firefox
  • Its there for windows 7 too. Its nice to see consistency across all OS
  • Looks cool but I have the tech preview installed so I didn't get the update :'( I don't know how I feel about the tech preview's updates cycle so far haven't really seen much be done at all maybe I'm just expecting too much
  • Didn't notice.  Probably because I rarely ever use the desktop if there's a Metro version of something.  I hate the desktop.  Which is why I hate Windows 10.
  • I don't see this change
  • I think it depends of the resolution and the location. It's not displayed in my Win10 Dell Latitude 10 ST2 in Panama.
  •    I didn’t download/install the update yet but I think it’s a good move. I don’t think too many people noticed the little magnifying glass in the address bar indicating that you could perform a search.
  • Hm. Not concerned. I got full Bing opening in each new desktop IE tab if not using the full win 8.1 search mechanism
  • I'll have to see if and how this conflicts with a 5 row tile hack ( up from the standard 2 rows ) I have running at home. Other than that I find it somewhat redundant when a similiar function is already built into the addressbar - And ALWAYS accessible.
  • When I search from the address bar IE redirects me to msn.home page forcing me search from within msn home page. In other words: search bar is unusable. I removed msn as my home page, no mater what if I use the address bar for searching I always land on msn.home page. (This happens on IE metro app, since I'm using a tablet I avoid the desktop app). How to fix this ?
  • Altough I always use Bing, I don't like this change at all. If I have a small window, my recently visited pages get out of the view. Furthermore, there is no need to add bing to the about:tabs page, as after pressing CTRL+T, I enter the search term directly into the address bar. Conclusion: Totally annoying! Does anybody know how to remove Bing from about:tabs?
