Lumia 950 and 950 XL get firmware updates via Windows Device Recovery Tool

Owners of Microsoft Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL smartphones can download a new, but minor firmware update. It's so minor that it is not even available as an over-the-air update, but is available if users connect the phones to a PC and run the Windows Device Recovery Tool.

According to Microsoft's support page (opens in new tab), the firmware release version number is 01078.00038.16082.360xx:

Combines fixes included in 01078.00038.16025.390xx firmware and 10.0.10586.107 OS update to factory and repair channels (including Windows Device Recovery Tool).

Again, you have to get the update via the Windows Device Recovery Tool; it won't be available as an OTA update. Do note that doing a recovery through this tool will wipe your phone back to factory settings. As a result, you will lose anything not backed up.

If you are already on the latest firmware there is no reason to seriously consider this route, unless you were planning to start fresh due to other issues.

  • So does that mean you have to do a hard reset (fresh install)? Or can it be applied as an update?
  • Yes This comment was posted on Windows Central for Windows 10 UWP.
  • Which is dumb This comment was posted on Windows Central for Windows 10 UWP.
  • thats a recovery tool, so that is how it would be. You can wait for an OTA or cry about MS not having a separate app for firmware updates !!
  • It is a hard reset. All WDRT updates are essentially a complete flash of the phone. Also this has an older version of the OS that will need to update once flashed.
  • RIGHT CLICK on continuum on app list now is working, seems much more stable now
  • Whats about the patch for the reboooooooot, for god sake. Im fed up of my 950 freakin rebooting all day
  • WDRT is a device wipe and reinstall...
  • Hope it will fix the brightness issue and heading From Windows 10 mobile, Lumia 950 (India)
  • I mean, there are no new features. It's a rollup update of already existing firmware for factory resets.
  • Perhaps it will fix the problem I have on my 950XL of the phone completely shutting down when you try to charge it and other random times. I actually have to pull the battery out to get it back on. No hardware button combo works to revive it.
  • Your is broken
  • Ya, I'd talk to Microsoft about that..
  • I have the same problem on 950. Its not the hardware. Its the freakin software. There are many people with the same issue. And guess what? Due the Universal Windows Problems (short UWP) my laptop does the same. They both started together. You do a recovery, and it works for a while, until it gets back to reboot routine.
  • Its the hardware, I went to the Windows store with the same exact issues and they replaced it and haven't had an issue since
  • My 950 NEVER reboots. One of the first att 950s. So I doubt it's all hardware... possibly a subset of devices.
  • Anybody that already download it via windows device recovery? Not at home right now.. Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • Yes. I just did.
  • ;) Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • Nothing noticeable.
  • Then I'll wait for OTA update, if they want to release it.
  • Soooooo...it does so little we think it only is beneficial if you're already resetting your device?
  • Weird, I have this firmware update a month ago on my XL, 01078.00038.16025.39013 Sent from any Windows 10 devices I have
  • But this is a combination of that and another fix. Bumps to .16082.36014 (on mine at least)
  • AT&T devices can't get it right? Sent using my AT&T Microsoft Lumia 950.
  • You can still attach your phone to PC and check with WDRT tool. Not really necessary to install it, you can abort on next step.
  • Yes just check it is fast
  • Cool thanks Sent using my AT&T Microsoft Lumia 950.
  • Ok thanks Sent using my AT&T Microsoft Lumia 950.
  • Does it add USB Host functionality? Nevermind. Not listed as a fix/add. :-(
  • Wut? Someone downvoted?
  • And my 950xl is stuck on 83% downloading 14291! Did a hard reset & wdrt. Maybe I'll try the next build.
  • Anyone else having an issue with their windows recovery tool? I installed the latest version on my surface 3 and it won't open. Trying to reset my Lumia 950xl so it's off of fast ring as the battery life is horrible (was at 100% 2 hours ago, now I'm at 64%, no windows hello or hey Cortana on arghh)
  • Try allowing wdrt through firewall, solved the problems for me.
  • What about the older phones..Microsoft is concentrating only on new phones and which have better hardware..
  • Not uncommon. Go look elsewhere and you'll see the same treatment from Samsung, LG, Motorola etc to their most current phones. You look after ones you're currently trying to sell more of first. Doesn't make it right or you feel any better but it's not just Microsoft that does things this way.
  • First of all in Edge, this website has so many errors when i try to post. Secondly, your totally right any update you do on a windows phone needs to be a fresh install. At least for me, i have never been able to "Update" my phone itys always a fresh install or I get errors and phone doesnt work right.
  • For me Lumia 730 showing a firmware update in windows recovery tool.. If i install it while data will erase from my phone ? Do backup bring back my app data if I completely erase my phone ? Windows 10 on Lumia 730
  • It will erase all your data, for that reason only i am not upgrading my lumia 730
  • Can you share new firmware version no.
  • On device
    Firmware: 15063.02004
OS Version: 10586.13090 Software available on server
    Firmware 15235.53005
OS Version 9561.14234 If I click on INSTALL will it erase my whole data ? and backup doesn't bring my apps, its data ? Start screen customization backup ?
  • Alternate title: "Microsoft updates Windows Device Recovery Tool from older firmware to old firmware, so you will still need to download updates after doing a recovery"
  • WTF, any update should be rolled out OTA. I have apps that don't backup or save to OneDrive. I'd like to be on the latest version of everything regardless of how minor it is.
  • Sigh. It's a roll-up of existing firmware updates. See the word existing. It's so that a factory reinstall brings together multiple updates instead of forcing the user to do two. There are no new features, no new fixes.
"I'd like to be on the latest version of everything regardless of how minor it is."
I think you can find help for this disorder, lol.
  • Lol. Sent from Lumia 950
  • and if you stay in this topic comment section for next hour, you might have to paste this comment again and again couple of more times....  :D
  • hi Daniel below is the list showing in my windows recovery tool On device
    Firmware: 15063.02004
OS Version: 10586.13090 Software available on server
    Firmware 15235.53005
OS Version 9561.14234 If I click on INSTALL will it erase my whole data ? and backup doesn't bring my apps, its data ? Start screen customization backup ? I am in fast ring for several months..... notification bar doesn't hide for older apps and that's the big problem for me..... is it common in OTA update too ? No one is answering this question pls kindly reply back to me. Thanks
  • Please read the article to answer your question. Anytime you update via the the recovery tool your whole device will be wiped, but you can restore from a backup. Keep in mind that not all apps backup their data.
  • 14291.1001 is installing for me - NOKIA LUMIA 730
  • Sorry and thanks for talking me off the ledge. I was quickly reading this while in a meeting.
  • Come on, Daniel, you should know by now that reading is hard. You expect too much from people.
  • I don't know what to say about this Dani, just checked my 950xl and apparently i have an microsoftmdg update that waits for me. I wanna state that i received all firmware updates till date (the whole 3 of them) and yet again comes this one as an update. Ps. It is an OTA.
  • It seems that the automatic firmware update has already started on my phone. Although maybe i am an insider with 14291 could be the reason i already have this version
  • Nevermind.
  • Good. I am on my brand new Galaxy s7 now. I really miss the windows interface but damn Microsoft is far far away from android. I will still be back in the future and by then I hope Microsoft have made some good progress Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • if i were to use the recovery tool will it reinstall all the latest updates and firmwares we just received. im considering it because recently i incerted a sd card and it had my phone acting up a little bit. soft resetting my phone resolve all issues it was having but on a daily basis i do screen shot and it no longer working. i found a post on MS website did what it suggessted and nothing has changed, last option is a hard reset which to me is a little extreme just to be able to do screen shots. i no longer use the SD card and will never put another in my phone avioding any issue it may cause, are there any other solution other than offered by MS http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mobiledevices/forum/mdlumia-mdcamera/lumia-950-couldnt-take-screenshot/783b1ad6-808e-49b5-a1d2-b8661a5b033f please help i see a forum for 8.1 not 10 unless im overlooking it
  • I did this today on my 950xl.
Then went upto latest insider fast ring build again with a hard reset after that was installed. I still can't download English for Cortana to work!!!
  • My Lumia 950 has 01078.00017.15452.59000 firmware and no update available. How can i update it ?
  • Use the WDRT tool. If there is one available it will allow you to update.
  • I checked the WDRT tool and is saying that 01078.00017.15452.59000 is latest version. I find it very odd
  • Did you read past the headline? Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • Why x50 owners always get/needs a firmware update? The last firmware of my Lumia 1520 has been very old... but also supports W10m.
  • Because it's more likely to discover bugs when a device is brand new than when it's been existing for three years.
  • The issue of OTA firmware updates for Insiders and Production users was supposed to be fixed. Very aggravating.
  • has anyone heard abt devices like 930 and  1520 getting FW update???
  • Still waiting for double tap to wake. Sigh.
  • This!
  • Why no firmware updates for Lumia 730 or older phones? Posted from Lumia 730 running Windows 10
  • i will ask Microsoft :D
  • hey   14291.1001 is installing for me - NOKIA LUMIA 730
  • update released 14291.1001 is installing for me - NOKIA LUMIA 730
  • Not for Canadian Dual SIm 950 yet.
  • As you know, This firmware was released for update the initial firmware for Windows Device Recovery Tool. So if you already have the firmware released in Feb 2016, you don't need to update to this version.
  • My 950 xl got it OTA...germany. Nope, i didn't install it. For now, i don't have time...
