What you need to know
- Microsoft Edge Canary users can now group tabs together in the browser.
- Grouped tabs can be collapsed and automatically frozen when collapsed.
- You need to go through edge://flags to enable the features.
Keeping track of all your tabs on Microsoft Edge can be a bit tricky. If you have many tabs open at once, the top of your browser gets crowded, and it can be hard to find the exact tab you need. A new set of features that's in testing on Microsoft Edge Canary makes it easier to organize your tabs. Within the edge://flags menu, there are four features that you can now enable related to grouping tabs (via Techdows).
The features are available in build 89.0.722.0 of Microsoft Edge Canary. The four optional features are:
- Tab Groups
- Tab Groups Collapse
- Tab Groups Auto Create
- Tab Groups Collapse Freezing
Each of these features can be enabled or disabled independently.
To create a tab group, you just need to right-click on a tab and select Add tab to a new group. You can then name the tab group and select which color you'd like its icon to be.
You can then collapse or expand a group of tabs by clicking on it. The interface feels quite natural and makes it easier to organize tabs. The option to have collapsed tabs freeze can also quickly free up system resources.
You can use tab groups on Microsoft Edge Canary's normal horizontal tab layout or the browser's vertical tab layout. Between vertical tabs, tab groups, and Alt+Tab being able to navigate to specific browser tabs, it's become much easier to navigate the web on Microsoft Edge.

Excellent. I already like the sleeping tab feature. By setting it to automatically sleep in the background, it considerably improves battery life on my laptop.
Edge is really nailing it these days! I would still like to get back to something more like Legacy Edge's web inking capabilities, but we do have part of that already now, thanks to that update a few weeks back.
These are awesome. I wish you could open a Collection into a Tab Group or send a Tab Group into a Collection. It's kind of annoying to have to recreate tab groups every time I restart my browser.
I thought this was already in Edge dev at some point because I played with it, but maybe I was using chrome. Or it was in edge before and was removed, since it's not in dev anymore. Interesting. When I tried it before thought it was interesting, but didn't see a use because I split groups off into their own windows already to keep things organized. I could see it being very useful for initial project research when you have tons of unrelated things open.
This was indeed in Edge Dev for a short time over a year ago.
Edge Groups have been in the stable channel for some time. What's new is the ability to Collapse them. I've had them for months now.
I've recently realized that Windows and Edge tabs works together with Alt+Tab task switching. You can find the setting for this at Settings -> System -> Multitasking -> Alt+Tab -> Pressing Alt + Tab shows: Open windows and 5 most recent tabs in Edge. I love it. It is reason alone to switch to Edge.
Not there for me, what build of windows you on?
Version 20H2, OS build 19042.630
