Microsoft's Gears of War team changes name from Black Tusk Studios to The Coalition

Microsoft still isn't talking about the next game in the Gears of War shooter series for the Xbox One, but today the team that's working on the game is now under a new name. The Vancouver-based team formerly known as Black Tusk Studios has been rebranded with the new name The Coalition.

Rod Fergusson, the head of the newly renamed team, explained the reasons why it is now called The Coalition:

"In short, The Coalition speaks to who we are as a team, and what it is we're working on. A coalition is a team of diverse individuals working together for a common purpose, a concept that we feel describes our studio quite well. Fans will also recognize the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) from Gears of War lore. When people hear 343 Industries, they associate it with Halo; when they hear Turn 10 Studios, they know that's who makes Forza. Moving forward, when you hear The Coalition, we want you to think of Gears of War."

Microsoft bought the rights to the Gears of War franchise from its creators and former developers at Epic Games in January 2014, and the company also revealed Black Tusk was working on a new game in the franchise for the Xbox One. Recent rumors, along with a video leak, point to Microsoft also working on a remastered version of the original Gears of War game for the Xbox One.

  • Any organization whose name is preceded by the definitive article 'the' just sounds pompous. I'd have stuck with Black Tusk Studios if I were them. Or just Coalition.
  • Not even just organizations. When people create twitter handles with "The" (pronounced with a long 'e') in front of their name it looks ridiculous as well.
  • I don't understand what you mean. B-)
  • They're saying they sound very full of themselves, which they do
  • Sarcasm Detection Error 0x58008
  • LOL
  • It's called confidence
  • Ha, okay, you can be grandfathered in.
  • LOL!! Sorry man :) But to clarify I am referring to The followed by their given name. Such as "The Leonardo Da Vinci". I take yours as "The (thuh) Coolester", not The (thee) Coolester"
  • Nailed it. B-)
  • You're cool B-)
  • I agree.
  • C'mon the new name should of obviously been Gears... Wtf Gears of course gears should of been for sure gears
  • I feel like you might be of the opinion that it should have been called Gears. I don't know why, but I just have this feeling...
  • I bet they would have had problems with Gearbox. Similarity in names of companies is no small problem
  • This is the one series of games that they could announce that might actually tempt me to get a new console. I just don't have enough time for gaming anymore... but for GoW I would have to MAKE time.
  • Screw ONE remaster, I want the whole collection remastered.
  • That's the next one. Like Halo did. Halo 1 anniversary then Halo the MCC.
  • Kind of sad for them because they had to give up work on their own IP to do this game. Hope they get a chance to work on it later.
  • They shelved that game after agreeing and seeing benefits of making gears first. They can set themselves on the map amongst other big devs if they deliver on gears 4. Makes their own game even more appealing to people if gears 4 is the success MS and the coalition hope to be. No one forced them to do gears first.
  • Not to mention it may generate more revenue for them and give them more breathing space when they start working on their own ip.
  • I didn't say they were forced. Thing is, if Gears 4 goes over well, they might just end up like Sledgehammer--pigeonholed into a more-popular franchise, while putting your own work into a shelf to collect dust. I'm guessing MS didn't but GoW for a single installment.
  • I'd also bet Microsoft made some sort of offer to fund and publish the original ip under the stipulation this remake is good enough.
  • Give us Gears One in 1080p with Horde mode from Gears 3, perfection.
  • Cog.. Gears... coalition... Seems Interesting.....umm don't get mad...but what is GOW all about...
  • Typical aliens versus humans SciFi story, albeit well executed. The gameplay was quite different from other shooters of the time and emphasized taking cover and flanking. Only played the first one, but I gave it a B+ or even A-
  • The name sounds good and better. I like it. now i hope next GOW would be good and we would be happy about The Coalition
  • Obvious hint is obvious :)
  • My first thoughts was "who the heck are they" when I heard 343 industries would be taking over halo development. Bungee for me always be synonymous with Halo and nothing will change that.
Anyway, if a rebrand to helps them (Black Tusk) such as increase productivity and general moral then good one them. A company name is just a name, it's the people who work at this company defines what it means. Therefore can make or break a company.
  • It was less that 343 Industries took over Halo and more that Bungie's Halo team split off into a new company called 343 Industries. Which you most likely know already, but I wanted to clarify for those that don't.
  • Just hurry up and release the whole collection on xbox one and why not windows 10 while they are at it
  • They could end up like Sledgehammer or they could end up like Gearbox which did Valve's console ports and then took those giant bags of money and made borderlands, Homeworld HD, etc.
