Originally created by Marcus Persson, better known as "Notch," Minecraft is a sandbox game set in a 3D world now developed by Mojang. Building, exploration, combat, crafting and resource gathering are all part of it and it's become a global sensation.

Minecraft also belongs to Microsoft now, since the Redmond giant acquired Mojang in late 2014. It's also one of the few video games on the market than can boast true cross-platform support. Besides the desktop version for Windows there are editions for PS3 and PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, Windows Phone, Android, iOS, OS X, Linux and the PS Vita.

Beyond these already available versions, at Minecon 2015, Mojang announced two new projects. Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition will be available in beta from July 29. 2015, the same day Microsoft's new OS launches to the world. Minecraft: Story Mode is a forthcoming tie-up with Telltale Games and will feature an episodic, story driven game for the Xbox, PC and some mobile platforms.
