Super-affordable Lumia story continues with announcement planned for tomorrow

Microsoft today teased an announcement that will be made tomorrow. What this announcement will reveal is currently unknown, and there's little to go on aside from the image above. What we could speculate is Microsoft may talk about an affordable Lumia smartphone.

The company asks everyone to tune in tomorrow at 8am UK time (3am EST) for the news. We'll have to wait and see. What do you think it will be? Sound off in the comments.

  • Another phone?
  • Oh God please tell me we aren't gonna get yet another cheap phone. Just focus on giving the Lumia 640/640XL the worldwide span they need to thrive.
  • Yup it's gonna be 645XS. Packed with nothing costs nothing. Completely useless.
  • The all-new Lumia Air.   Literally.
  • The Lumia 640 is less than 25% the cost of a new iPhone 6, so it is a cheap phone. Maybe that's part of the announcement. I'm used to carrying a flagship phone (1520), but the 640XL may be my next phone. Not because it's cheap, but because it is so nice.
  • The Lumia 640 XL is indeed nice, but it is literally half the speed of a Lumia 1520, and half the RAM. I'm not sure what they are saying about the Lumia 435 and 532 if they feel they need to make a "super affordable" Lumia.
  • There could be an even cheaper phone than the cheapest Lumia 435 or there could be an mini version of an existing Lumia. If MS make a 50dollar Lumia with dual core, 4 inch display, 1gb RAM and flash/memory card support - the phone will be a best-seller and you might see it everywhere around you. Lower the cost by not integrating NFC, IPS, 4G, HD cam, front cam, gorilla glass...or use cheaper variants. We want WPs that are very affordable, especially for people who are reluctant to change from android/iOS.
  • The specs for Windows 10 say that mobile screeens can be as small as 3" and VGA as long as there are hardware Back/Win/Search keys.  Windows 10 Mobile doesn't require cameras or any sensors (strangely) and doesn't even require touch (!) but if touch is present, only 2 finger is required. I think they should just work on making current Lumia cheaper, instead of this endless parade of new devices that are internally almost identical.
  • How low can you go? How low can you go?
  • Lumia 40 for $40 unlocked...
  • Lumia -140. MS pays you to use their phone. You know it's coming!
  • Lumia One @ $1
  • Another cheap phone. This is getting dull. I understand the low end is where msfts market is, and that if one could afford a high end device it won't be on WP, but some people want choice. I certainly do. I don't want some cheap low end drudge. I'll settle for the Chinese spec 640 though. That's more like it. I'm in the UK, a first world market, and demand a better way to waste my money!
  • Send 10 quid down under, thank you.
  • You can easily "waste your money" on let's see.. 830, 930, 1520, Htc M8 Windows. How many devices will satisfy you? You guys keep talking about Another low budget, but currently on the market we only have the 530 and now the new 435, so I don't see much saturation here.
  • And the 6 and 7 series. The 830 isn't exactly impressive either - but then I own a 625, 800, 900, 920, 1020 and the 1520, which is the best wp device money can buy. Still. I just want something new and up to top standards. I msft isn't chasing the top end market, where I spend my money. I'm not the preferred customer. That makes no sense. There's a dearth of low end devices and it is no good to anyone looking to spend money. And yes, I own a bunch of devices. I also own a couple of android devices, iPhones and BlackBerry bbos and bb10 devices. I also own a number of watches, cars and companies. Not everyone is a student and if that's all MSFT are after then they're missing alot.
  • can I get 1 please? T-T
  • Again, As a US Verizon customer, our Lumia choice is the 928. So this "too many phones" comment does not play for the largest phone carrier in the US. Let's not even talk about Sprint...
  • And "normal" people have just the 1 phone. You are one out of 0.001%.
  • Wow, not-so-humble brag much? :) But, like you, I want some REAL high-end WP options... Something in between the 1020 & 1520 would be nice. I just don't feel the need to tell you about my PRIVATE JET to express my desire.
  • Sir do you need a car driver, or someone to take care of gardens at your house, I need a job, I really do lol
  • So you purchased the 1520, a maximum of 15 months ago. Most companies release a flagship once per year, we are currently just over one year, and in the middle of that year there was a purchase of the Lumia brand. I would imagine that an entirely new set of shareholders and upper management would put a little hickup in the design and build process of the next flagship, along with a new operating system on the horizon. So if you think that MSFT is holding off only because they are trying to cater to the cheap market, you're missing a lot.
  • 15 months and counting, at best there's another 5 to wait.  If anyone thinks that such a long hiatus at the high end is not adversely affect the fortunes of the entire platform, then well lets just say I'd like some of what they're smoking. WP just can't afford the loss of momentum that this situation has brought about.
  • Well when you build a device you let me know how fast it should take. I already made my valid points as to why it's development cycle could be increased, there's likely more as well, but you apparently had nothing to counter those points.
  • Well currently on market there is 435, 530, 532, 535, 630, 635. All kind of low budget! Idk how lower than that they can be. Besides why people just don't save money and buy a 530 (there was no need for a 435 to begin with). 530 is less than $100 in BR right now, that is pretty affordable.
  • Lucas,
    You forgot 520,525,620,625
  • The 6xx, 7xx and 8xx are all low budget phones.  You realise the Snapdragon 400 is the CPU used in smartwatches, right?  Are you calling Android Wear devices Flagship??? Factually, the Snapdragon 800 is over 2 years old, and Android devices moved onto the 801/805 over a year ago, and at this point, with new devices coming out with SD810, the SD800 is midrange, frankly. The Nexus 5 has practically identical specs to the Lumia 930, and only ever cost $350 for the base model.  You still can't get a Lumia 930 for that price. Oppo, OnePlus and Xiamoi are coming for the worldwide market, and when you can get flagship devices for midrange prices on Android, there is no reason for budget-specced Lumia to cost so much.
  • Microsoft Lumia FreeForty. Free with every Office 365 subscription
  • Or how about the 640 Chinese edition free for every xbox live and ms account holder?
  • In case it's another low priced phone, I'm not sure what MSFT is going towards. I think they have all price points in that range covered with far too many models. It's getting a bit confusing now
  • I agree, it seems to be reaching the point of over saturation with the Lumia entry to mid level devices. However, unlike Android, who has a multitude of OEM's picking up the release of budget devices, MSFT is doing it single handedly. I believe what MSFT is doing, is their only option at this point to get Win-phones to the 10 % critical mass point.
  • Previously Gabe Aul said there will be no new phone announced before the Windows 10 full version.
  • "no flagships" to be announced before Windows 10
  • It's going to be a DIY Lumia kit. A box full of parts and some model glue.
  • Lumia 335??
  • May be they plan to dump all the 512MB phones without front camera at a ridiculous low price for all the Nokia feature phone owners.  Say $29.99 with any Asha phone trade-in.  They can phase out all the feature phones and convert their owners to WP in one scoop.
  • The 740?
  • Yes please, they need more mid range (and high end) phones.
  • Noooooo my L730 is 3Months old
  • Lumia 340 & 340XL
  • Lumia 330
  • They already confirmed the death of the X30 series with the 640 so my guess is that it may be called the 340.
  • 545 and 545XL with specs better than the 640?
  • You made me laugh so hard just yet!! Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Super Affordable. It will be replacing features phones. $29
  • wait and see another wp with low budget then LOL
  • Would be great if it was a super slim (abt 6mm) phone with decent specs - 740 or 840
  • The Lumia 340, ultra cheap low specd phone for up comming markets only. Starting $29,99 before taxes and subsidiaries ;-) Just a guess ^^ Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • A £20 smartphone sounds feasible in my opinion. They have been pushing prices lower and lower after all.
  • You can get the 435 for about £25...
  • Office 365 free for a year with new lumias
  • This is AMAZING! They are flooding the market just like what Android did in 2008-2009. Certainly a good move to force traction. High end devices will come soon and that will keep the momentum going if not increase. Those waiting to upgrade their high ends from 2013, 2014 should really think into buying a low end but good spec phone for £150 to fill the void. It is excellent investment and then end of 2015 - get high end phone. That £150 works out as about £5 a week if you buy a new phone end of December.
  • Eaxcatly!!! You sir see the bigger picture, Microsoft is going after the market that is the Biggest piece of the pie and once  WIndows 10 is complete we will have are Super Duper One precenter phones :)
  • Why would i replace my 1520 with what ever this "affordable" phone will be? Doesn't ms have enough low end phones? 4xx ,5xx,6xx,7xx,8xx and now this?what do we have for high end? I'm ready for an upgrade. Consumers are looking to upgrade at anytime of the year . But here @ WP we wont be seeing anything high end for at least 6 months.... Maybe longer. But there's plenty of cheap phones to pick from.:(
  • If you have Lumia 1520 - its the best out there. The latest software that Microsoft has to offer, works the best on Lumia 1520. Why would you want a new upgrade device, that does nothing more than your Lumia 1520? The software out there, isn't advanced enough to give you anything newer than what Lumia 1520 already gives. That is one reason, there is no need for higher end phone. However if you "want" a new phone, then why would you shell out tons of money for a piece of harware, that is not giving you anything new, because software isn't advanced enough? Would you rather not spend tons money on a beast that actually is better than your Lumia 1520? If you only need to satisfy the itch of a new hardware, then Lumia 640 XL is excellent phone and you don't need to shell out tons of money either.
  • Not just new hardware but better. The 640xl is like light years behind from the 1520 . My screen is cracked and would love for a new phone but not less than my phone and wont pay for less.
Sure the 1520 is good but would like something newer but equal or greater than the 1520. And sure ill spend the money. Always have had ms best,920, 1520. There worth the money
  • Um that note 4 does like alot more than my 1520 seen it on videos and in person. Would not mind a new lumia with similar features. Its been raved as the best phone out there . When the 920 came out..there was nothing like it! How does ms know I don't want an upgrade? They assume I don't .....guess what happens when you assume? For ms assuming equaled WP market share going this way ⤵ instead of going this way⤴ !
  • The Note 4 only does more because Android allows it to. In terms of most features and usability the 1520 matches and surpasses it in most cases. I own both btw.
  • Nope Note 4 is way better
  • Not in the US. What MS really needs is to get their phones on our carriers, and to get their unlocked variants to ship with the LTE bands we use.
  • lol -520
  • Hahahhab
  • Lumia 4xx instead of Nokia x, Lumia 3xx instead of asha
  • Good thinking, I like it!
  • Maybe 240
  • So many different Lumia phones...wish it wasn't so complicated for someone who doesn't follow the Lumia line like I do. It'll probably be another affordable device, like a Lumia 135 or 276 or 438 or 316....
  • I told them not to release my Lumia 035!
  • Oh... Hello there, Lumia 00.00345
  • Lumia 035 running windows 98
    /s\
  • Shouldn't that be Lumia 98?
  • Or Calculators running windows
    /s\
  • Just make sure you send them all the countries here in Argentina we dont get all the models!
  • +920
  • It's ok, I think the HTC M8 for Windowss was only ever launched in the US and they wonder why it didn't do well lol
  • Yeah that is still a bummer... Would have done well outside of the US.
  • Lumia 335 ..
  • I hope its an announcement for worldwide availability of the 532...
  • A 3310 with Windows ;) lol. :D
  • Blasphemy! Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Already done (but you can't buy one :P). http://news.softpedia.com/images/news2/Nokia-3310-Makeover-Announced-wit...
  • Probably is phone for India that will be replacing features phones. $29
  • Wow another budget phonne? Good thing, we were running out of choices! Lol. But really, if they could make one in the US$35 range, that would pretty much eat up ALL the dumbphone users and bring them to WP, provided they get the distribution to the right markets
  • And its gonna be Lumia 340
  • lumia 130. no camera, no flash, no GPS... BUT fully loaded with MS services and win10 ready! /s   ahh, tired of those budget phones.... my contract (L920) ended 2 months ago, and i'm waiting for an update since...
  • The 930 is pretty future proof. So is the 1520.
  • Got the HTC M8 and Lumia 1520 and instill can't wait to see what's next... Lol
  • i'm buying phones once every 2 years, so i'm not buying a 930 (icon), that's been out for more than a year...
  • 930 is kind of future proof but it's not suitable flagship replacement. Any flagship should sport all features of a Lumia device. No glance on 930. 1520 however is fantastic.
  • When in India?
  • Tmw
  • The Lumia 210 with windows 10 :D
  • I hate to join this party, but do we need yet another affordable Windows phone?  There are plenty.  This will just confuse the potential customers.
  • How will it confuse the customers? The targeted market (those who just grab a phone at the super store of whatever) just grab the cheapest decent looking phone they see.
  • 645xl for china ??
  • 740 pls :)) the affordable one .
  • This report is funny. "How much goes into a super-affordable Lumia?" And the report speculates MS will talk about an affordable Lumia.
Really? Ya think?? From that image I was speculating that they were going to talk about the differences between flat shoelaces and round shoelaces & which is better..... But I suppose anything is possible, even talking about an affordable Lumia. :P
  • Oh and by the way, it's going to be the Super Affordable Lumia DualSoup..... It'll be two old soup cans with a string. It uses hand gestures to call your friend or family member by waving your hand in the air to indicate you want to talk. Then you simply pick the device up and gesture the device closer to your mouth until the string is tight. Without a tight string, it'll be prone to bad reception.
  • Well they (MS) could pull the ole switcheroo... you never know :P.
  • I don't mind the number of affordable phones they're making, but can they at least stop making them look like Fisher-Price toys? The original design language of lumias was kinda cool at the start of wp8.0 but now its getting old. Microsoft needs a sleeker more mature design approach for wp10 phones.
  • My green Lumia 930 makes a lot of people curious about it. :) Would not have been the case with just another black-and-white or gold slab.
  • 640XL+ lol. Maybe its that 2.2ghz, 2gig ram 640XL that was leaked a few days ago. *shrugs*
  • 640X2 like the Nokia X2. :P
  • Flagship... I hope...
  • A flagship is NOT super-affordable
  • The Lumia 920 came out as a Super Affordable flagship.  It started out at $450 off contract.  If the emphasis is on Super and affordable is in comparison to the S6 or iPhone 6 then it could be a flagship.
  • 920 was $700-800ish in many countries
  • For phones like 740 or 840 Microsoft will conduct an exclusive event inviting the press a month ago so don't get your hopes high it will probably be a low end phone
  • They should announce the Lumia 532. It's Microsoft's own affordable super-seller.
  • I doubt they would be able to go any lower than the 435 @ £29.99 without making substantial loss per device.
  • Well, not lower than the 435, I'm just saying that the 5xx series is still the best selling model for the brand and this time it will be a Microsoft Lumia.
  • This is ridiculous all the time and effort in these budget phones and money wasted on these reveals for these phones they could have put out a phone with flagship specs smh
  • I've never seen something quite as ironic as your username.
  • About windows10
  • What? Are they going to sell this one for a few cents lol?? The 435 at £29.99 is ridiculously cheap for what you get.
  • Yea, how much lower end can you get?..
  • Lower does not mean lowest.
  • Lumia 640XL chinese variant
  • Lumia 110ne!
  • Well, if they're making their flagship super affordable, I'm all for it...!
  • MS Brazil released a banner in their Twitter account last week talking about a Lumia 353, probably misspelling the Lumia 535. Lets see if was a premature release.
  • Has anyone realised that they said UK time? May only be a small thing but its normally some sort of American time zone?
  • 3 am EST
  • Yes but why the UK time on the original article?
  • Probably because the author of the article is from the UK.
  • A Lumia Senior phone?
  • 740 with 5 inch 1080p screen and 10mp pureview camera with OIS and Zeiss lenses? And at the same starting price of 735? That's affordable! :)
  • May be Lumia 300
  • How about a high end phone instead of these low end devices?  How many cheap devices does MS possibly need.
  • I'd like to (finally!) see a decent 4" Lumia. Please give us a super-affordable phone that is not also super-thick. The story continues?
  • Lumia 532?
  • I say that it's another low budget phone... But I would hope that it's a flagship that has Windows 10 on it that will have all the bells and whistles plus they found a way to add & upgrade the 41 megapixel camera without a hump of any kind on it and will be on the next Windows 10 phone....:)
  • Prepare yourselves for a whole new world of...mediocrity! I think at this point Microsoft Mobile is releasing all these cheap crappy phones to annoy WP fans. That has to be the reason. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Nokia did the same with its own Ashas and dumbphones. -_-
  • Asha and dumbphones were aimed at people that DON'T want a smartphone (parents who are wise enough to know their 10yo shouldn't have a smartphone, elderly people etc).
A Lumia is a smartphone. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • It doesn't matter whether they were smartphones or not. There were just so many cheap Nokia phones with similar price and features. It was just as cheap and crappy with Nokia as it is with MS, now.
  • How about a free phone that simply blocks google services completely! Of course that is illegal in the US and Europe, but they can be sneaky about it. Just make the browser crash intermittently when someone uses google services, with an error message that says "I'm sorry your poor choice of Web Services is unreliable and sells your personal information to terrorists, switch to [insert corresponding MS service here] for a superior web experience."
  • Well yeah 512 Mb ram, no front camera, onscreen buttons, tft screen, well lol.
  • Lumia 532 addresses a good deal of those shortcomings.
  • Announcements, no delivery and the catch phrase remains 'coming soon'. MS is becoming a huge con_tech giant.....
  • $40 Lumia 1020 ftw lol
  • There's so much good news happening this morning! Yay!
  • super affordable?wow great.how fortunte,i have £3.5 handy.
  • Plot twist: Another cheap Nokia X with Lumia label.
  • Nokia Lumia 330 & 330 XL
  • I think they want to give us money and a phone!!
  • Lumia 1... A phone you can build yourself Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • affordables are already cheap, does super affordable mean free ???  .
  • Lumia Band...
  • Yes, yes, Microsoft. You've covered the crud out of affordable. Give us something high end. Just one.
  • lumia 830 with a bit lower features !
  • Lumia 520 2nd gen... With 1gb ram , latest processor, front camera, flash , ----- etc
  • Say hello to the 535, now available!
  • hilarity ensues
  • Windows phone doesnt feel premium like in lumia 920 days...no flagship...
  • 930?
  • How about ANY phone whatsoever for Verizon customers?
  • No offense to Windows Central, but this was a 77-word article announcing an announcement, with no real substantive information in it. Was this really necessary?
  • They're just keeping us posted on what to expect, dude. Or do you think the title alone would be enough?
  • To let us know Microsoft is announcing something on this Microsoft focused site? Nah course not...
  • They're serious about replacing that Ashe line.
  • I think this should be lumia 435. In here (Indonesia), that is sold for
  • Microsoft: WE - WANT - FLAGSHIPS-!!!!!! Posted via the Windows Phone Central App for Android
  • It will be a low end bottom feeder, with a hidden Easter egg inside. Anyone using the old screenshot keys gets a picture flashing by super quickly of Joe B flipping them off while holding a hamburger and text over the top will read "No new flagships, ever!"
  • Announcement at 1:30pm lunch time in India....
  • 1:30 PM LTI... lol
  • Instead of "seems faster" it's "seems cheaper" these days...
  • Jesus. Microsoft is turning into the new Samsung...
  • That strategy worked pretty well for Samsung so far.
  • I know, but it just seems so... Convoluted. 435, 532, 530, 535, 630, 635, 640, 640XL, 730/735. I'd say they already hit all the bases.
  • Can Microsoft replace the word "Affordable" with "Flagship"! We have enough affordables around. I want to replace my third 1020 with a 1030/1040. I can't be buying the same phone over and over again when lost or damaged.
  • Perhaps you should be more careful with your device... The next flagship won't be out until summer.
  • Maybe there's isn't going to a new phone announcement. Maybe its something else.
  • Microsoft still has not manufactured a top end phone..the 930 and 1520 were both high end and from Nokia..not Microsoft!! Maybe they will announce the MS Mobile 666 model.
  • I'd definitely buy that model!!
  • For distribution in Afghanistan
  • Yawn...
  • Jesus Microsoft enough with the low end handsets already! Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Seriously? Another cheap phone, you got the market flooded with them, there are so many that I lost freaking count. Get on working on a flagship, otherwise you have an army and invading another kingdom without a king of your own.
  • I don't think it's an announcement for a new phone. Im guessing it's a backstory for the low-end phones like 435, 532, 535... Etc. Though not sure why it needs to have such a big fuss.
  • there are already several affordable lumia phones in the market right now!
  • Keep going Microsoft. I actually think their overall strategy atm is spot on.
  • 140, 240 and 340 As long as they release one in Asha 210 style with physical keyboard ^ ^
  • A Lumia with a physical keyboard would be interesting.
  • Agreed. Not to take over the world, but to add a little spice.
  • When is the super un-affordable phone going to get here already!
  • Buy a 1520, and bling it out with 24karat gold case, diamond screen and pearl buttons. Super-unaffordable flagship ready....
  • There is no proof that this is yet another announcement for a new model. However, if Microsoft can replace most of the cheap feature phones (non-smartphones) out there with something running a light version of Windows, would that be a bad thing? Maybe even make a deal with the carriers to offer a free trade-in? Here in the U.S., the feature phones may not be all that common anymore but they still are in many other countries and many of those are old Nokia devices.
  • Perhaps they're working their way down to the Lumia 000 :)
  • Hhhhhh will definitely buy one if it's for 0 $ :)
  • Screw me three days to Sunday if it's yet another low end piece of complete crap dumped on the market to compete with their other low end models. Where are the 940, 1040, and 1540 (940XL)? Where is the brand image? Where are Microsoft's ideas? Where is Satay Nutella's lunch? That's right, in the toilet. And it stinks.
  • I think tomorrow will release wp10 preview for 512mb ram devices (Lumia 520)
  • Lumia 3** series, 1 G RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, no SD CARD, no front facing camera, 5 MP mean camera, just saying ;)
  • maybe once you hit rock bottom you can only go up   lol
  • You can probably dig through the rock and go even further.. Maybe that's what Microsoft is doing....
  • How much... Doesn't only mean monetary... It could also mean free software coming with the phone. Think its anything from free wp10, mobile MS office to free wireless chargers the list is endless.
  • I would like a free office 365 subscription with unlimited OneDrive storage then
  • I am sure they are going to announce the iPhone killer with 16gb ram 200000gb internal memory 800 mega pixel Camera and all the trimmings...
Problem is no one will buy it cos the music experience is crap and the lovely panoramic hubs have been replaced by semi functional boring pages. Many apps will have been left to wither on the vine. And lastly most importantly they will only advertise it in Azerbaijan where it will be tired to an exclusive carrier contract
  • May be a new smartphone !!
  • As Windows 10 would be everywhere, why not ditch Symbian OS for feature phones they plan to release in the future. Make a Nokia feature phone running win10. ;)
  • Enough already with "affordable phones"""!!!
  • A 530 spec but without camera
  • Apparently Daylight Savings has not yet begun in the UK, so I'm guessing the time designator in the article is correct and that 3am EST = 4am EDT.
  • Yet another phone for the emerging market and nothing for the long time WP stalwarts hoping for flagships. Microsoft buying Nokia was very unfortuante. Nokia knew the importance of flagships, buzz and mindshare and Microsoft seems to be completely clueless about it.
  • isn't lumia 6xx/5xx already super affordable?
  • NO. Lumia 240 is.
  • It sounds like it's going to be a 'high end' phone but at an affordable price. I am hoping it is as I'd like to find a replacement for my 920 sooner rather than later.
  • A Lumia ME. Runs Windows ME. Only has a front facing Selfie camera using Lumia Me .50 camera app. Has Office ME, OneMe online only storage, ArmME chipset, NoteME, SkypeME. Seems like a very selfish phone though.
  • Great, another phone I won't buy. However, I hope cab drivers in Afghanistan get the phone of their dreams.
  • Lumia Tab 9 with LTE?
  • I think they're going to point out that an affordable Windows phone has better quality tech than Android and Apple phones that are more expensive. What they are not going to do is then look everyone in the eye and say "So what the hell is your problem? Why do you keep falling for their bullshit sales pitch? Are you stupid? WTF?!?".
  • FFS another budget pos my 820 will demolish. Someone nuke the 3rd world please!!!!
  • I'm thinking may be the hinted at African .market device am UK am in Africa.
  • What if the answer to the slogan would be "Everything!" and they're announcing a flagship phone for the price of let's say a midrange one?
  • Buy a super affordable phone and get a flagship phone for free...
  • Microsoft is doing the right thing releasing affordable phones.  This is the right strategy for now.  Most of the next billion customers will use super affordable phones with nice specs.  The flagships will be announced when Windows 10 comes out.
  • If it's just 2000₹/- then it will be a big hit.+720
  • All new Lumia 040
