Every weekend, Windows Central livestreams an Xbox One or Steam game for 1-2 hours and gives out free games to the cool people who join us during the stream. It's like a live podcast, only you also get to watch a game while chatting with our awesome readers and viewers! We call this show Saturday Game School, because learning about new games is always fun.
Tonight on Beam, we played Trove, the free Minecraft-style MMO from Trion Worlds. Read on for quick impressions, contest winners, and the full video replay.
What happens when you mix Minecraft with an MMORPG? You get Trove from Trion Worlds, a free to play for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Exploring and building together with large groups adds a whole new dimension to the familiar block-based gameplay that Minecraft fans love.
Trove offers a whopping 14 playable classes (I play as a Chloromancer who has magical control over plants and flowers). The sheer variety provides a lot of opportunity for player expression. It helps that the game has no real story that characters must fit within. But all of these disparate character types have their own weapons and moves that make it feel different from the others.
After completing the tutorial, players will arrive in the main hub world, a place where everyone gathers to group up and head off to other locations. You accomplish this by passing through a series of portals, many located on a vast golden tower. Aggressive players can also head into player vs. player (PvP) arenas from the hub.
The actual gameplay plays like a speedy, streamlined action-RPG. You'll explore vast voxel-based worlds in search of dungeons and loot to complete. Each player gets to customize their own base via Minecraft-style building. Joining a club provides access to a shared world that all club members can contribute to.
You won't find a real story in Trove, but it's a fun massively multiplayer spin on traditional Minecraft gameplay. Check out our full review for more details!
We streamed Trove for ~90 minutes, starting at 9pm Eastern (8pm Central, 6pm Pacific, 1am GMT). During that time, we gave out a total of 16 prize codes:
- 10 Trove $50 premium currency codes for Xbox One
- 3 Trove Chaos Cheat codes for PlayStation 4 (North American accounts only)
- 3 Trove premium currency codes for PlayStation 4 (North American accounts only)
See the contest winners at the end of this story.
How to watch Beam livestreams
We're now streaming on Beam, Microsoft's interactive livestreaming platform. It provides some welcome improvements over Twitch, such as a cleaner website layout, built-in stream interactivity, and extremely low latency.
You can follow our channel at Beam.pro/WindowsCentral. From there, you'll be able to watch the stream and participate in chat directly from any web browser, including the Windows Phone browsers. Xbox One owners can use the newly released Beam app to watch directly from their consoles.
To receive email notifications when our Beam streams go live:
- First, follow our channel.
- Now select your profile from the top-right corner of the screen.
- Pick the Account option near the bottom of the menu.
- Go to the Notifications tab.
- Make sure Send me important email updates on the Beam platform is enabled. This option is labeled deceptively, but it's required for all forms of email notifications.
- Click or tap the Email box next to our channel name until a check appears. That's it!
- We highly recommend that you set a recurring alarm on your phone. Our weekend stream always starts at the same time (9pm Eastern/6pm Pacific), so the phone reminder can be very helpful.
Want to know what's next for Windows Central's weekend Beam programming? We stream a different game every Saturday (and sometimes Sunday). Microsoft’s ‘Project Latte’ aims to bring Android apps to Windows 10
Microsoft is working on a software solution that would allow app developers to bring their Android apps to Windows 10 with little to no code changes by packaging them as an MSIX and allowing developers to submit them to the Microsoft Store. The project is codenamed 'Latte' and I'm told it could show up as soon as next year.
