Video review: New Bing for Windows Mobile

OK, everybody. The new Bing app for Windows Mobile is out, and we're giving it the what-for. Join us after the break for a quick video walkthrough of the navigation and search app.

Note: One thing we don't show here is that while you can find yourself using GPS on the map, it doesn't scroll the screen to follow you while you're in motion. That's a bad thing. (thanks, anon!)

  • Still not supported on all devices. HTC Imagio on VZW, WM6.5 stock rock, WVGA screen, still wont install with this CAB, says it is not a supported device.
  • You should follow us on Twitter as I posted the link last night...here it is again though: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/881958/Bing.cab
  • nope, still no go, device not supported. only thing i did not try was setting IE as the default browser, but I doubt that has any change. browsing with IE to http://m.bing.com/download with IE on "mobile" setting gives you a site that look like you can download it, but it still downloads the old version
  • Same with the Verizon Omnia i910 stock 6.1 CF03 rom... how bout it xda boys, care to give us old folks a mod version like "Marketplace" until MS releases (hopefully) a version for 6.1?
  • I have the same problem and here is the cab for imagio:
http://mobile.search.live.com/client/download/wm/BingWM6.CAB works with IE mobile only, it seems
  • The GPS doesn't work at all with this app on my TP2 running SSK's 6.5 rom. Talk about one step forward and two steps back. Now I gotta find an old Bing cab.
  • Love the new interface....Picks up my location very fast and the dot does move if your getting directions "tested it while driving". But i didn't hear any beeps. Mighty Mike Touch Pro 2
  • It doesn't do turn-by-turn directions like the old Bing. Microsoft has reduced Bing to a Mapquest clone.
  • Does not support navigation to a contact :( Is this the final version, or a beta? It seem some features are missing.
  • i tried a version from PPC Geeks and it showed Bing Beta on the splash screen; it was slow and cumbersome and i was thoroughly unimpressed. i installed the version referenced here (after i removed the min/max OS versions from the cab file) and this one works better, but is still slow compared to the older Bing versions. oh yeah, this version also crashed twice. fyi, i'm using Bing on a Touch HD. EDIT: after restarting Bing, it now reads "Bing Beta" on the splash screen.
  • Yup. I do NOT like the new Bing. There are so many things I don't like about the new Bing, I'm going back to the old one. The icon that represents the car when you're driving is jerky and delayed. No directions to a contact's address? WTH?
  • Which custom ROM are you using with your Tilt 2? Looks great.
  • Viigo doesn't work on any of his roms.
  • gps didn't work on my TP2 with verizon, still using the old bing, don't like this new version
  • bing gps not working on my vzw tp2 either. running juicy r5 rom.
  • Check that out, the reviewer he has my Mobile Gamertag application installed. I am honored :D Cheers :)
  • :)
  • Wow.. The new version is pretty and PRETTY USELESS. I had it installed for about 10 mins. I don't know how they made it so choppy and the GPS tracking so bad, but they managed. Directions to contact? gone. Hey Microsoft, if you're reading this... Thanks for screwing up a really, really good app. Functionally, it's worse than the very first Live Search app that was released. I'm VERY thankful I save .cab files for all the apps I use. Had I not, I'd be switching to the Google Maps app which is much more useful.
  • Hey, I can open Bing. But te nex day it does not open.
    What happen???
  • This was a re-design of the entire client from the ground up (why some features are not there). The issues mentioned in here were found in testing but were postponed until our next release.
  • Jaredow, if that was the case, then they shouldn't have released the Alpha version that was put out on December 2nd. It's horrible! The reputation of Microsoft's Bing was on the line and it's now mud. How do you make a very useful application, the one with icons, and turn it into some useless software? The GPS routing doesn't work any longer. It can't find locations any longer if you speak into the microphone. Try Embassy Suites Hilton in Seaside, California. The old version found it in one try. The new version...well, it never found it even after 6 tries. I couldn't track my way out of a paper bag with the new version. The older version took me to the hotel and to the aquarium. The new version is a disaster.
  • I'm sorry you
  • Just bought an HTC Imagio w/WM 6.5. I'm 4 days in and the Bing Speak feature works 1/3 of the time. Very frustrating! I'm not sure what version of Bing I have but I have to manual get the GPS to find my location so when I speak to find something it finds it close to where i'm at.
  • My HTC Imagio has version 4.6 in verizons Marketplace is version 6.0. Should I upgrade??????
  • I bought HTC Imagio w/WM6.5 a week ago. So i'm a newbee. Preinstalled on the phone was
Bing version 4.6169.0. Now I'm trying to get Bing 6.0. Have tried twice. Once from the Marketplace by installing it from there and it says it's installed but when I check it is still Bing 4.6. then I removed Bing from the system folder Remove Program and it was gone. Then I got thcab file for Bing 6.0 off the internet and brought it into the phone with Active Sync and in the phone in a new folder created by me (DL) I double tapped it and installed it and ended up with Bing 4.6. WHY?????????

  • Another thing, using text hidden within a useless picture of a mountain as your main screen? Not very useful for people who have touch phones. Using icons are much more efficient. Where's the movies and the gas prices? I could care less about weather or internet. I already have those built into my phone. I want movie times. I want cheaper gas prices. Thank goodness for the older version. Then there's the map view when looking at it in landscape mode. Did you guys even try it out? The menu and navigation bars are so HUGE they basically cover the map. It doesn't matter that it's semi-transparent, it still hides the map. Take a page out of the older version and use that. The old version was much more useful.
  • Not sure I understand what you
  • If you use movies on the old Bing, it would give you movie listings by theater, theater and time listing by movies, etc. When navigating, it is not possible to reroute if you miss a turn. I agree with all comments on this page. Not a single one is positive, so is my experience. The only good thing I see on this page is that someone from Microsoft is paying attention.
  • I do not like the new update of Bing. I have an HTC Fuze on AT&T. On the map, you need to have an option to remove the Bing search bar. It covers up the map. The GPS tracking is choppy. Like it updates every 30 seconds or a minute or something. When getting directions, it does not track your movements and updates the directions like it did in the old version. Has frozen my phone.
  • Very very bad taking away the "track me using GPS" feature. That was the main reason I used it. Man I hope they bring it back cause I'll never install it unless they do.
  • Honest and true... I was as surprised as most that the NEW Bing app, felt like such a down grade to the old Bing app. Because when the Bing app first launched it was AWESOME! The old Bing seemd very easy and straight forward. I hardly used my Google map anymore because of it. With this update, yes it looks pretty and simple, but simple does not = easy. The new map engine is nice, I wondered if it was running Silverlight. Outside of that EVERYTHING else needs to go back to the way it was. If MS wanted to do something new, they should have built Tellme into the new one. This new app will make people turn from Bing much like many here, including myself. Therefore, I also intend to downgrade and will not install another upgrade UNLESS the app is made (not anew) but old.
  • I like the old Bing better because it made sounds befor a turn came up and it automatically rerouted. That was what made it better than google. To be fair, I like the new interface, but the main screen has been glitchy at time. I love the voice recognition, but the app fails when mapping directions again because you can say an address when you need to pay attention to other things, but it requires you to constantly look at the screen to follow the directions. I will be switching back to a previous cab. I hope microsoft in future releases restores that functionality and brings it closer to the android/ copilot experiance. At $30 dollars, the switch to copilot will be happening soon.
  • Wow.. thanks Bing for making things completely useless for me this latest update. I was so thrilled to see the new update only to be utterly disappointed. It freezes, crashes, and half the features I did use are gone and replaced with what appears to be just "Bing search page PLUS a gps-like map-like thing" Bring back gas prices, the old movie listings, AND a GPS map with better updating (no freezing) and ETA to destination - oh.. and directions from a contacts address. The old icon system was better also - whats with this crappy background image where I can't see the text to select?? Who said "oh yeah, I like that snazzy background that completely clutters the screen" in your testing phase? ... or ... did you even bother to test this?
  • It doesn't do trn-by-trn directions lke the old Bng. Mcrsft has reduced Bing to a Mapquest clone.
  • With Google now doing turn by turn GPS on the Android.......what in Gods name is Microsoft thinking by taking it away from the "new" Bing? It makes absolutley no sense. Microsoft, I love you but c'mon. Give us some reason to stick with the Windows phone O/S. The competition is killing you so don't do things to help them along.
  • Tied Bing navigation on Samsung Ace. No glitch, ran smoothly. I compared side by side with my Garmin. Bing gives much better voice prompts (3 per turn). Also makes a "ding" sound before the turn. Re-routing is slower than Garmin: but that is expected since Ace does not have best processor.
  • I agree with everyone else. Bring back most of all the features from the previous Bing version. I liked using the gps, now if i try to use it the screen dims and the phone goes to sleep while in gps mode. And the gas pricing is gone and this is just overall a downgrade from the last version. Id say the only thing i like about it is the look. The GPS/Maps looks great but doesn't keep the phone from sleeping.
