If you're an enthusiast who wants the latest and greatest before everyone else, now is your chance to download and install the next big feature update for Windows 10, known as the October 2018 Update, before it begins rolling out. This update is now available for download if users manually check for updates in Windows Update. It should also be available via the dedicated Update Assistant and Media Creation Tools.

This is the first time Microsoft has made available a new feature update to the public before or around the same time the update shows up for Insiders in the Release Preview ring. In the past, an update would usually be available in the Release Preview ring before being made available publicly via the Media Creation Tool, but that doesn't seem to be the case this time around.

Microsoft says the October 2018 Update will begin rolling out automatically through Windows Update on October 9, just one week from now. That's when users who don't go seeking the update will begin to receive pop-ups from Windows asking to restart to install the latest version of Windows. So, if you want to get ahead of the curve, it might be a good idea to download and install the update manually now.

  • Nothing yet on release preview.
  • Finally
  • Same build number, so apparently they are releasing it with broken Task View animations. That's disappointing but on the other hand, Patch Tuesday is in just a week anyway so maybe they figured they could just wait until then for the first cumulative update. So I guess hope is not lost yet. Until then, however, I'm holding out.
  • Broken in what way, I don't see any problem with the animations on either my SP4 or my desktop?
  • nothing if I check. No new media creation tool either.
  • The media creation tool available for 1809 now
  • old one available 1803 not 1809
  • Neither of the ways to get this update mentioned in the article work for me.
  • available now on website
  • Thanks... They just updated the page.
  • Installing on a custom-built PC here.
  • Available on my device, production ring.
  • Thanks for the heads-up.
  • After the 1809 update neither edge or the store would connect to the internet.
Changing the wireless connection type from "Private" to "Public" fixed it!
  • Clean install from ISO onto the 16GB tablet done. Working on manual update to desktop now.
  • The update isn't yet available via Windows Update for my 2017 Surface Pro.
  • Strangely, it *is* available for my HP laptop that is several years old, didn't come with Windows 10 (I bought Windows 10 Home and clean-installed it), and the only drivers that it is running came with Windows 10.
  • Yep, I got it!
  • Upgraded using the ISO, took about 30 minutes from start to finish. All seems fine so far.
  • Tried the media creation tool on two different computers with two different flash drives and got the same problem. The upgrade files download and then during the actual writing to the drive the process fails with an error message saying there was a problem. Both flash drives showed up as unformatted after the failure. Anyone else have this issue?
