Windows 95 can really run on a tiny Apple Watch

A person has created the code so that Windows 95 can be installed and run on an Apple Watch, but it was not an easy task.

That person, Nick Lee, posted just how he accomplished this project on his Medium page. He points out that the hardware inside the Apple Watch (a 520 MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage) should be able to handle the 26 year old Windows 95 with ease. In practice, however, it took a lot of effort. We won't go into the programming details but let's just say it is definitely not as simple as just installing the OS on the smartwatch. He even set up a way to keep the smartwatch's motor on its crown going, so it would not fall asleep during the process.

The final result can be seen in Lee's video above. As he points out, Windows 95 still takes an hour to boot on the Apple Watch due to the fact that the OS is running on an emulator, but it does work, sort of.

  • I remember using an Floppy Disk to install Windows 95 on my PC. Those were the times.
  • Unless one of the twenty six disks couldn't be read from!  If that happened you were screwed.
  • And it was always disk 23
  • Once again I left in amazement at the ability of these creative minds. Nice work.
  • That's pretty amazing to get an x86 OS onto an ARM processor... Maybe he'll get hired by Microsoft to put x86 emulation in Windows 10 Mobile...
  • That's not what's happening under the hood. Send from Bikini Bottom via my ShellPhone 950 XL
  • That makes $apple's New Hardware Security in questionable position. now any one can easily bypass the OS Restriction. Now that days comes soon where People want to turn their Old iPad (Productivity Blocks) in to full fledge windows 10 PC.
  • No iPad owner is going to want to load a non touch optimised OS like Windows 10. Especially not on an Arm processor!
  • not touch optimised OS windows 10? ~DheeraJ~

  • Dude!! seriously..... windows is going fully touch since windows 8 came out. ----Tell me do you get windows 10......you will :)
  • Pull the other one! Windows is gradually moving towards a fully touch optimised interface. But the file explorer is v.v.difficult to use on a high DPI tablet. Edge still doesn't have left/right swipe gestures. The whole settings/control panel separation is a bit of a disaster.
Give it a couple of years and Windows 10 will be ready for prime time. Even when that day comes, the iPad will still have huge app lead....which is critical.
  • people are still in a Blind Faith of Apple.... that needs to change....they don't know that some thing Better and Secure out there. ---Sorry $apple fan...truth to be told.

  • @spinzeroWL what? My fully touch enabled desktops run perfectly with Windows 10. I never have to use the mouse unless I'm deep into an app that wasn't yet created for touch. So I have no idea what you're talking about. The whole point of Windows 8 and 10 was touch. Are you actually calling an ipad a high DPI tablet? Good lord.

  • Hell! What are talking about, windows 10 is touch optimized OS.
    Where are talking from?
  • Yep. Windows 8.1 was way better.
  • You never use surface stylus, haven't you... Let me updated your technology, It got eraser button. Your ipad has "pencil" and no buttons and depends on Bluetooth. Since it has no burton, if you accidently switch off the BT, the pencil will not work. then, you have to stick it to the ipad "bud" to make it work. Don't let Apple cheat you!
  • here is a fun part about Apple pencil....you need to actually Re-charge Apple pencil and for recharging you need to make it an TV antenna first...lol....don't they even think before making things...
  • Might be the closest we get to a surface phone now that Intel has canceled all of their future phone SoC plans and removed themselves from that market.
  • Just when I thought the Apple watch couldn't get any more pointless. I guess this exercise was fun for a nerd with tons of idle time?
  • Really, that's a lot of time wasted for nothing. An hour to boot!!! And you can't do anything with it.
  • Sounds like your average Mac then! ;D
  • If this can happen so why Lumia 820 cant run windows 10 officially
  • Because IT is a verry old OS, on a NEW hardware, and it takes An HOUR before it even starts...

  • @Jakob: Oh man, c'mon don't make a ****.
If i could blame, I would Blame MS, Blame Satya, for not optimizing the OS to run on 820.
Earlier they said all WP 8.1 phones will get updated to W10M.
I was to much happy to know that.
Then they said not all phones with WP 8.1 OS will be updated untill you have 8 GB of storage.
I was still happy because 820 has 8GB of storage.
Then what caused them not to do so.
Thats how they ruined WP/WM community not to grow & to decline.
  • If windows 10 is business oriented so where is flip to silence feature
  • I miss having the flip to silent, a damn good Nokia feature that was. ** 950xl and loving it !!
  • Well, at least it made the iWatch a little less crappy :P Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Lumia 830 is having screen blinking issue when they will solve this
  • "[...]the 26 year old Windows 95 with ease." LOL, Windows 95 was released in 1995, not 1991 :P
  • I think you meant "not 1990". Lol. Hey, maybe Mr. Callaham is already 5 years ahead of us. :P Send from Bikini Bottom via my ShellPhone 950 XL
  • We are nering mid-2016, so it depends on what month we are talking about. It could be 1990 or 1991 :D
  • August '95
  • It would have made more sense to try to install WinCE or WP7
  • Wow. Look at all these gestures.
  • Support the Apple watch with Windows 95 Continuum?
  • I think there needs to be a rule like rule 34 for tech. Like rule 95, if it exist in tech, somebody will put win 95 on it

  • Damn that dude got skills
  • The worst windows os.
  • It seems you've never heard of Winows ME.
  • ME had the best driver database to date at that point. While the OS got bagged on (as is typical ever other OS with MS it seems), it definitely had it's positives. Plug and play hardware had never been so easy.
  • I too was an Win ME fan, it was the first os that booted and shut down fast unlike 98SE. plus it was generally pretty good to use, only very rarely ran to crashes, why it got such a bad name i have no idea, still have the CD just for the memories!   For me the disaster os was always vista!
  • So it only took it slightly longer to boot on the watch then it did on a 486 DX2 with TURBO on? Sweet!
  • What's the real world benefit? Or just too much time on someone's hands?I would love to see such creative minds find ways to install mac so a windows bases computer
  • It's called a Hackintosh
  • Windows 95 on Apple Watch is better than Windows 10 Mobile on Lumia 950.
  • I would get your phone looked at.
  • You need to check into a psyche ward if you weren't joking about that
  • Now that Intel killed its mobile chips this is the "Surface Phone".
  • Now apple fan say see how powerful apple product is !!!! Amazing apple what an innovation....well, apple fans who bought watch then regretted will find some of use it now lol
  • Finally a USE for a Apple watch for Windows users :) According to what he said, it takes about an hour to boot. I guess not too usefull, maybe someone should put a SSD in a iWatch ?
  • Awesome.  Great upgrade to an overpriced mediocre apple device.  w95>IOS.
  • This is maybe everywhere. I read this on Hackaday first.
  • will this edit & encode 4k videos via adobe premier pro?
  • Sorry guys but I'm nonplussed when new hardware runs really old software (they were pint sized and undemanding) but if it was something catastrophic like VISTA running on there then it would be impressive lol =p Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10 on my Lumia 950! Step off, haters! U-U
  • lol if he got vista in there, he might as well as send ito n an interstellar trip were some unknown may find it by the time it boots up to aero glass !
  • All its missing is a dialup modem
  • An hour to boot up Lol! "Whats the time?" "errr I'll let you know in a hour". Never the less it is pretty amazing, a true testament how malleable software. You are only limited by your imagination.
  • Ugh.
  • "What can I do on a rainy day that could potentially brick my 700$ gadget and void my warranty?  Oh, right, I'll install Windows 95 on my Apple Watch." Seriously, nice work. Strange idea, but cool thing to try out for the heck of it. :)
  • WAIT, can you install apple watch os on a old pc?
