What you need to know

  • AMD Financial Day takes place towards the end of this week.
  • A rumor suggests that new details about the Xbox Series X, including gameplay footage, will be showcased.
  • Cloud ray tracing will also be revealed at the event.
  • Take it with a grain of salt until we receive official confirmation.

Today, a rumor emerged on Reddit that Microsoft would discuss the Xbox Series X at AMD Financial Day towards the end of the week. According to the post broken down by Twitter user Klobrille, Microsoft will talk about RDNA 2 and how it worked closely with AMD to develop it. However, the company has a lot more up its sleeves. A rain ray tracing video from potentially Forza Motorsport 8 will be shown off alongside a 4K resolution and 120 frames per second (FPS) upgrade to Forza Horizon 4. Lastly, a cloud solution to ray tracing will be revealed that should minimize the load on local hardware as long as the console or gaming rig is connected to the internet.

We've been hearing that this could be true so we decided to report on it. Obviously, when it comes to any rumor, take it with a pinch of salt until we receive official confirmation from AMD or Microsoft. If it's true and RDNA 2 was developed with Microsoft in mind, it's unclear where this leaves the PlayStation 5 and Sony.

It's important that both companies fully disclose their console specifications so early adopters can make an educated decision on which device they want. However, it seems like the next-generation console battle will be fought over more than just teraflops if the cloud ray tracing technology takes off.

  • Here is the original post on Reddit. I've got to say. I'm definately leaning towards true. Their is way to much detail in the post to be fake. Like way way to much detail. If true, and I say 'if', MS and specifically Turn 10 have helped design RDNA 2 and have it exclusive!!! Meaning PS5 is using a customized version of RDNA 1.0 which is roughly estimated 50% less efficient than RDNA 2.0. It's been widely Rumoured Sony are calling theirs RDNA 1.5. Which actually means even an RDNA 1.0 14tflops GPU is still not as powerful as a 12 tflop RDNA2.0. And also will not take advantage of the RDNA 2.0 raytrscing capabilities designed by Turn 10 and AMD together. Again if true, what he says about the Forza 8 demo on Nurburgring in the rain is gonna be mind blowing. And Playground Games 2nd team finally showing us what they have been building the last 2 and half years. It says a forest in realtime showing different seasons. Snow slowly melting forming little streams as it melts and puddles. Honestly I really think with the amount of detail the Reddit poster goes into I'm saying this, in 3 days we are going to be blown away with what Series X can do. And also an 18tflop RDNA 2.0 GPU for PC at $999.99??!!! Nvidia are screwed.
  • "...forest in realtime showing different seasons. Snow slowly melting forming little streams as it melts and puddles." You know what game has forests in it, right? 😏
  • Yes. I'm trying not to get to excited, but my first thought was the Rumoured Fable reboot. Would make sense if they designed their engine for big outdoor environments with changing seasons and forest. If this is all true come Thursday, Series X is about to show exactly why you would want to upgrade. The visual difference to Xbox One X is going to be absolutely massive.
  • So from a disruptive marketing standpoint this makes sense. It also would explain why they talked about the 12 TF in the XSX. Wont hold my breath either way, but the rumor mill does peg AMD announcing the big navi cards during this event. So from a partnership stand point this wouldn't be totally left field.
  • Klobrille posted this update: "After further investigation, I've come to the conclusion this specific rumor is very likely not true. I'll not delete the original tweet just for fun. I hope this adds more transparency and I'm sorry for sharing in the first place. More relevant stuff to come prior to E3 though."
  • I saw that, but he didn't explain why it didn't seem true. I'm taking it with a grain of salt either way, it just seems odd to say "not true" without giving any indication why.
  • Yes. Good thing too, as if it doesn't end up happening, he won't come across as a fraud. I just hope he's only trying to cover his ass, because this presentation sounds really epic.
  • Yeah normally leaks are very vague. What I think is GDC got canceled. It sounds like a GDC type presentation. And instead AMD and MS are doing it on AMD day. There is to much prescie detail in all the information to be incorrect. That's my feeling.
