charging

We use smartphones nearly every minute of every day, and that can be an issue, specifically for batteries. If there’s one area in tech that we haven’t seen any innovation – not for lack of trying – it’s batteries. Sure they’ve grown in size and chipsets have become more power efficient, but for the most part, charging is still charging in 2014.

We have all been there. Through no fault of our own, our Windows Phones have been dropped, scratched up, sent sailing from a bicycle mount, or otherwise put in harm’s way at least once (more for some).

The latest chapter in Windows Phone horror stories comes from Windows Phone Central member abel920 who connected his loyal Nokia Lumia 920 to the micro USB charger before going to bed. He awoke to the smell of burning wires and wrote it off to someone toasting bread downstairs in the kitchen. While toasting bread in the middle of the night has happened, what generated the burnt wire smell was abel920’s Lumia 920 and charger.

Wireless charging and Windows Phone have gone hand-in-hand since Nokia entered the scene back in 2011. If you own a Windows Phone (or any compatible Qi device) and don't currently have a wireless charging dock at hand, you may want to check out the latest DailySteals offer for the Nokia "Fatboy" DT-901 Wireless Charging Pillow.

Nokia's 'Free Wireless Charger' page has been live for a while, but registration isn't quite ready / open yet. The Finnish manufacturer has however published the terms and conditions, which reveal exactly what will be on offer and who will be eligible for said free gear. Those who purchase either the Lumia 920 or Lumia 820 through Phones4u will be able to claim a free wireless charging plate.

The Lumia 920 was announced today at the Nokia Windows Phone 8 press conference in downtown Manhattan, New York. Among the specifications and features presented was wireless charging, which will please many who don't enjoy fiddling with USB cables.

This is a new feature to the Windows Phone platform that enables Lumia 920 owners to recharge their smartphone by simply resting it on top of a supported accessory. Nokia will be releasing its own charging units, including plastic mats and Fatboy pillow units.

Making use of the Qi standard, we'll likely see public charging stations / mats being used to top-up Windows Phones. Exciting times ahead.

Check out our live blog and the Nokia feed for more details released today.

If you have a few minutes you can watch the video above of reader Oli Gill bravely modifying his Nokia Lumia 800 to enable wireless charging ala Palm/HP and their Touchstone charger.

There is no doubt that any of us, especially with the more high-end Lumia 900 would love to have this feature in our Nokia Windows Phone. In fact, we wonder if and when Nokia will take the big plunge and be the first Windows Phone OEM to do this officially. After all, if there was one hardware company that could do this on a wide scale it'd be Nokia (though HTC and Samsung are fully capable too).

We're not going to lie though, this mod is quite advanced and we're pretty sure we won't have the time or skills to do this. But we also know a lot of our audience is highly educated and love to do things like this, so for you folks, here you go!

Oh and Oli, if you ever want to start a small side business, we're sure many of us would gladly send you our Lumias to have this warranty-voiding hack. Anyone else?

Thanks, Oli, for the tip and video

While it's been confirmed by Nokia already, the team over at WeLoveWP.hk have run some tests on charging the Lumia Windows Phone with a number of options. Turns out when put up against generic USB chargers (eg. Apple), USB ports and another Nokia charging unit, the Nokia Lumia adapters provided more charge for a faster rate of recharge.

Check out the summarised results below:

  • Computer USB 2.0 port: 3.85V - ~110mA
  • Nokia DC-11K Mobile Charging Unit: 3.9V - 330mA
  • Apple Charger: 3.88V - 300mA
  • Lumia 800 AC-16 Charger: 3.95V - 600mA

Should you have a Nokia Lumia charger in your procession, using it over your PC (or other USB based chargers) will pump the juice into your Lumia handsets at a faster rate.
