Cortana release for Europe 'in the coming months' according to rep for Microsoft France

According to a tweet shared by Microsoft's Lawrence Schlosser, French consumers won't have much longer to wait before Cortana is available. The tweet by Schlosser, who is a Senior Director of Operator Channels at Microsoft France, notes that Cortana is on an accelerated pace and it should hit France "in the coming months". A familiar but somewhat reassuring expression these days for Microsoft fans.

Reports suggest Microsoft may be pushing for more markets within Europe, leading us to expect a general regional-announcement covering multiple countries. We have received tips from Europeans who have come across some interesting findings, including the Cortana web page (opens in new tab) for the Netherlands (these pages are also available for other European languages, including Portuguese, Spanish, French and more).

Although the evidence is light, it's clear Microsoft wants to get Cortana on as many Windows Phones as possible. It is simply a matter of when. For Europe, it shouldn't be much longer. We'll let you all know once we learn more.

  • That's good
  • Plz Asia, thanks
  • +Asia
  • We already have in alpha.
  • For non developers!
  • On dev preview, mind.
  • I wonder what her accent will be......
  • About time...
  • Keep Jen!!! American English ftw!!!
  • If it would release in the Netherlands, i would probably switch back to WP in an instant...
  • That's the spirit!
  • I love my WP without Cortana also. But it won't be bad to have a voice assistant.
  • Still waiting on a proper Cortana for the UK, instead of that robot we were given.
  • Lol, I don't like the posh accent either and prefer Jen Taylor's voice.
  • In fact nobody has got it at all outside dev preview. In fact, 8.1.1 is not out except in dev preview. Slooowwwwwwwwww
  • "also available for other European languages, including Portuguese"   I'm ready to bet, as usual from Microsoft, it won't be Portuguese but Brazilian. But we'll see.
  • Provavelmente, mas é melhor que nada :)
  • Brazilian don't exist..
  • All I wanted from the begining was to be able to use the US english Cortana with the phone set to my own country, like I currently DO with Google Now. Why for Microsoft everything seems so hard? where is dictation as a keyboard option, system wide like Google have since 2 years ago?
  • Actually, both Portuguese as well as Brazilian academics beg to differ ;)
  • Brazilian is not a language it doesn't exist. Its Brazilian Portuguese. Its official this language exist.  You can say that in Brazil we don't speak portuguese but brazilian by differences, but official registred language is portuguese. We speak Portuguese Language we learn portuguese. This prejudice already annoyed a lot. The only one who say that we talk brazilian are portugugese people. Falamos a Língua portuguesa, aprendemos Língua portugesa.
Simples.
Possui a mesma base, a mesma sintaxe e a mesma morfologia.
Eu te compreendo e você me compreende. Simples.
Hehehe)
  • In coming months? It's very vague. 1 - 6 months are considered s recent months
  • In all technicality December 2020 is still a coming month.
  • It's sadly kinda become it's catchphrase.  Windows 'In the Coming Months' Phone. Patience is something one learns very quickly when a WP Supporter. Lots of it.
  • Cyan for PFD
  • When can Cortana order a Bratwurst for me?
  • Haha good point. I Cortana to bs able to order me a bratwurst!!
  • It will take a year to get customized Cortana for everyone. I hope when wp9 comes it should have the ability to launch Cortana in multitasking with good integration. This would be very nice for all windows users.
  • Bill gates has a virtual daughter i.e : Cortana , because when you ask her whose your Daddy? The answer will be : Technically speaking that'll be bill gates
  • i hope Greece is included there, i would really like to use it in my country as all would. I hope for a general Europe release :)
  • I Want German!!!
  • Ich auch....
  • I want Cortana for Germany in English language. I don't think she will understand me speaking German.
  • That'd be great, too. I want her with a British accent.
One of the Pythons could do a male version of Cortana. Ni!
  • Just switch your region the uk if you have update 1 installed and you might need to have language + keyboard set to Uk English. If you want to check out her posh voice. You might find it attractive but personally it annoys me to no end, not everyone in the UK speaks like that lol.
  • Yeah I wouldn't mind using her in English but I need her localized to be useful... Always being results for America is not very helpful :/
  • Sprist du Bayrisch? :D
  • Nein, deutsch ;-)...
  • +920. (and on 2520, please)
  • This page it's available for Brazil too =)
  • Que página mano?
  • The Help Page for Windows Phone in Brazil always had all the Tell Me voice commands listed, including the ones that NEVER EVER worked in portuguese. They just translated the page from english, and never bothered to check if it applied to the final product. It's been like this for years.
  • I've been waiting for this annoucement :))
  • italy?!
  • +1520
  • I want Cortana speaks Venetian dialect too :D
  • With the French original Cortana's voice from Halo ?
  • Ain't going to happen, you will get a French speaking voice actress. Just like how they employed a British voice actress albeit a very posh actress for the uk version.
  • Will it now have an alarm we can actually hear?
  • Can't wait
  • In Ireland??
  • Guys, the Cortana page exists in many, if not all languages, with a note at the end that it's only available in certain markets and for certain languages, so it doesn't really mean anything. A lot of services don't work in Slovenia, for example, but they all have their page in Slovenian how-to section, with the footnote of course. They probably just translated everything into every language.
  • O ja
  • i have 8S and i dont care
  • You bought a knife to a gun fight mister.......the I crap vs the lumia monster is a no contest.
  • I just want to be able to set my country back to Belgium but still use Cortana (and everything else on my phone) in English.
  • +BelgianChocolate
  • Estimated time for Denmark?
  • Vi bliver nok de sidste.. :P
  • Jo, helt sikkert
  • OMG portuguese K.O. :D :D :D
  • PT?
  • Just wait. Its Brazilian portuguese:  http://www.wincentral.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/CortanaBrasil11.jpg http://www.wincentral.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/CortanaBrasil21.jpg
  • Just hope that by Portuguese, they don't mean Brazilian Portuguese only!
  • Don´t believe so. It's going to be as usuall brazilian portuguese.
  • Yay for Portugal!
  • Please release Cortana for Greece! We want it soo muchhh!!!!
  • Everything is coming.....Windows 8.1 Cyan, Lumia 730-830, Windows Threshold, Cortana.....blah blah.....this is getting tiresome.
  • Cyan's out, the 730 & 830 are out and Cortana's out and Windows Threshold hasn't even been officially announced yet, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.
  • As a Colombian, I wonder why they work in a Spanish Cortana made with a Spain accent, when all Latin America (without Brazil) speak Spanish... I bet we buy much more windows phones that Spain alone... But again, I'm happy that it will be in Spanish no matter the accent.
  • I've been thinking about this too. I really don't like the idea of using Cortana in Spanish with the Spain accent (not that it's anything wrong with that, it's just that sounds completely distinct).
  • They've been talking about language AND markets: There's more to it than just talking to the gadget. The services accessed by Cortana should be relevant to the market or else the talking phone is just a gimmick.
  • It is easier to have a general version, it would've been amazing if they could have catered for all accents but that is just impossible lol.
  • As per what you say, Microsoft should release a general version of Cortana to all markets before slowly localising them according to each individual country.
  • Why is Ireland always left out, when it was released in the UK it might as well be released in Ireland we speak the exact same language.
  • Cortana has yet to work out what "begorah" and "top of the morning" and "bejesus"  means.
  • In "Andaluz" too?
  • How about Celsius support in US, I dunno what the F stands for. F=fucking stupid system
  • ".... and in Celsius?" these magic words will help you.
  • It would be better if it (she) says it at first....
  • The Cortana page being available for smaller languages doesn't mean she will actually speak Dutch (let alone Belgian Dutch!) The Speach page is also available, but you have to use another language since dutch isn't actually supported, in fact, the list of supported languages for Speach is depressingly short, which doesn't bode well for Cortana. Same thing with word flow, it has a page on the website but doesn't work in dutch, thank you very much Microsoft! BTW, I want Microsoft to update the design of the website for other countries, the en-us version looks gorgeous now!
  • I just don't get the Wordflow limitation; it's the same friggin' word predictions, just with a slightly different input method - how can that be so hard to implement in all languages?!?
  • I want #CORTANA in ROMANIA. :D ( 2016 maybe:)) )
  • I guess we will see Windows 10 before Cortana comes to Romania :))
  • What about Germany ? c:
  • The everlasting WP tagline, "coming soon"......
  • Shut up already... :)
  • Turkish and Dutch please
  • I think this kind of announcements should be made by herself! She even knows what football teams are gonna win...
  • The sooner they release, the more Regional Data Cortana/Bing can collect and the better the service gets. Awesome! Cortana Team you are doing a great job!
  • Cortana based on bad Bing data outside US will be a lot worse I bet.
  • She use foursquare data, which is awesome everywhere.
  • It took months to launch Cortana in an English speaking country: UK .. I'm afraid to envision when Cortana will be launched in a country with 11 official languages: South Africa.. Will it ever be launched here though? :/
  • Well, really there's more than one language in the UK. Even in English it's hard to use Cortana in Wales, as she doesn't understand our town and city names. Microsoft just made Cortana for London.
  • Nope they just made it for the royals... Lol The voice is far too posh for my liking. I guess they think we all speak like that -.-.
  • Well, the posh peeps would feel the same if she spoke cockney, ay...? Queens English, you know... ;-)
  • Microsoft please make Cortana and swipe sms texting for Slovenian market. That'll be so cool and a very good market move, since WP is growing on it's popularity in our countrey.
  • so its safe to say ..cortana for whole of Europe (well most of atleast) will come with the denim update which will be accompanied by 8.1.2
  • I hope they release Cortana for whole of Europe in Denim update but we can't say that for now...We just have to wait to see... :(
  • I doubt it...
  • "Coming months". So vague. What about Asia? "Coming years"?
  • yes, portuguese. I just hope you referred to Pt-pt and not br-pt. since pt-pt does not have Word Flow, I found it strange to get Cortana first. Unless it comes all together, in that case, perfect
  • pt-pr doesn't have Word Flow? That's lame.
  • Just pt-br has Word Flow.
  • Hope it comes in Germany soon :D.
  • I don't want Cortana controlling my life, it's creepy :(
  • Seems Faster™ and Coming Soon™ are registered trademarks of Windows Phone.
  • Don't forget about In The coming months
  • You have the right to remain Patient™. Any impatient act or speech you use may be used to Delay™ the App/Service.
  • India will get beta cortana with the update 1 or denim change of alpha state that's almost confirmed...
  • Eh, those pages aren't hidden, you can get to them after you install WP 8.1. Notice that while the text on the page is localized, the video and the screenshots aren't. And they say that Cortana is only available in some countries/regions, to clarify that while you can read the page, you can't actually use Cortana yet.
  • Cortana page for Turkey was available from the start. I don't think that means we're gonna get it soon.
  • MSFT needs to hurry here. Native language support is a critical element. Done well it is a distinguishing capability that will win users.
  • Yay, there's a Danish one as well...! http://www.windowsphone.com/da-dk/how-to/wp8/cortana/meet-cortana Let's hope there's a 'good reason' for it! :-) To be honest I'd settle for a functional, localized Cortana in English instead of waiting forever for my own language...
  • Is incredible that Cortana will be out in other languages but in Spanish
  • EUROPEAN PORTUGUESE? I have to see to believe it! We're usually ignored and left with English versions..
  • I am going to bet I will not see it in Latvian for at least one year, if ever. It is already taking so long in much more populous languages. P.S. We also do not have Swipe keyboard :(
  • Bing service is terrible even in searching for something related to microsoft own products. I wanted to use bing some times but couldn stand the results. If bing doesnt grow up, cortana wont go anywhere.
  • oh come on! Why in the world they didn't release BABUSHKA voice assistant for russia? ;(
  • For the love of the masterchief and the halo franchise please keep Jen Taylor as Cortana's voice or at least let us choose what voice we want for her don't force it on us. I know many gamers here want to hear Cortana talk to them like she talks in the games
  • Swedish!!! Now!
  • Portuguese! At last!
  • lol Cortana can sing you a song?  I never knew that.  Just tried it and she sang a few different songs.  Neat!
  • This page of "Meet Cortana" is available to all languages. http://www.windowsphone.com/pt-br/how-to/wp8/cortana/meet-cortana (Brazil) http://www.windowsphone.com/pt-pt/how-to/wp8/cortana/meet-cortana  (Portugal) http://www.windowsphone.com/es-mx/how-to/wp8/cortana/meet-cortana (Mexico) http://www.windowsphone.com/es-py/how-to/wp8/cortana/meet-cortana (paraguay) http://www.windowsphone.com/fr-fr/how-to/wp8/cortana/meet-cortana (France) You can just look at official Microsoft web page and change language from URL and you will see that "meet cortana" is available to all languages.
  • Oh so there is no Cortana for us in the Europe, not even the english version? That's disappointing. I watched reviews for Nokia 1520 and though it's an internal part of every newer Windows 8.1 phone.
  • I hope, the swiss variant of Cortana will be released at the same time as the german one. Even if she defenitly will not be able to understand my dialect ^^
  • I wouldn't count on it seeing as we had to wait months for Cortana here in the UK after her US release, but perhaps the early releases in Australia, Canada and India, where they were given the choice of either American English or actual English, suggests that they've already learnt from that mistake.
  • It will be really nice if we could get Cortana to France this year :) Anyway that's cool to see that microsoft don't forget us.
  • "Cortana release for Europe" Last time I checked the UK was still part of Europe and we've had Cortana for a few months now, so I think your headline is inaccurate.
  • That's not how most Brits view it, mind you... ;-)
  • She still won't call be by my name in the States :'(
  • This is good news, but still so frustrating. Why not offer Cortana as an opt-in or a beta app or whatever, and give users the ability to change the language of Cortana to whatever they like among what is available? Why force users to change region to US and the whole phone language to English? I don't mind Cortana speaking English or giving me Farentheit temperatures for the time being, but having my whole phone set to US region is preventing me from buying any app in the store (as I don't have a US billing address)! I'm pretty sure when Cortana is released in France, I will not be able to use in Switzerland without setting my region to France, even if my spoken language is also French. It's similar for the Swype keyboard: it's available for French, German, Italian, basically all languages spoken in Switzerland. However, the Swiss keyboard does not support the feature, just because the layout is oh so slightly different (basically two or three letters placed differently). So if I want to use the feature I have to switch and adapt to the French keyboard. Why not just release the most useful features more broadly? Why do I have to set my phone to US and use a French keyboard layout to use features released six months ago in the US? And still don't get me wrong, I love my Lumia...
  • Bummer! So close and yet so far away!
  • European Portuguese (Portuguese-Portugal) finally!
  • I want cortana speak Italy! ❤
  • I would love it on my WP with portuguese portugal... Not portuguese brazil because they're are different in many words
  • I have just received my update with Cortana on my Lumia 930 an hour ago. I'm in the UK on EE and I am loving it!
  • Guys, please. Let's just all agree that Portuguese is one of the most beautiful languages ever and that if Microsoft is localizing one for Cortana, it should also do for the other. Paz e amor. :)
  • I wonder if they can enable Cortana while using different region and language. For example, we can use English US in Australia region.
  • I'm sure the Finnish version will be available very soon...
  • I hope Baltic countries will get Cortana too!
  • Croatia please!
  • Hey everyone, what about the realese of Cortana in the frech part of Belgium? I  can't wait to use my personal assistant :)

  • Wakey wakey! Whats the story now? Still waiting for Cortana in Slovenia - can someone tell me why it takes so looooong? :S Looking forward to Windows 10, though! ;))
