What you need to know

  • Gears Pop! is a mobile collaboration between Funko and Microsoft.
  • It features real-time player vs. player gameplay.
  • While it is free, there are microtransactions.
  • You can download it on Android, iOS, or Windows 10.

Updated September 13, 2019: A new patch for Gears Pop! fixes the login issue. The team is also giving away a pack as compensation.

At Gamescom 2019, Microsoft provided a number of new announcements and details about the Gears of War franchise. While Gears 5 is an upcoming third-person shooter from Microsoft's The Coalition studio, Gears Pop! is a mobile game that's a lot of fun. The game launched on August 22 and is a free-to-play title so there's no risk in testing it out.

The launch period hasn't been without its problems, but a new update is out which brings balance changes and a lot more. In a post, the Gears Pop! team said, "We want to mention that the Xbox Live Login issue continues to be a top priority. The cause has been identified and the team is working on a solution. We'll be sharing updates on our social channels and we appreciate your patience."

We'll keep you posted as soon as the Xbox Live sign-in issue is resolved. It's unclear how much time it will take. It seems like the problem is limited to a small number of players at the moment.

Gears Pop! is a bit like Plants vs Zombies where our favorite Gears characters face-off against one another in "fast-paced explosive real-time multiplayer battles." Over 30 characters from the franchise are in the game currently, and you can bet that number will likely grow over time.
