Watch and win as we livestream Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime tonight on Beam

Every weekend, Windows Central livestreams an Xbox One or Steam game for 1-2 hours and gives out free games to the cool people who join us during the stream. It's like a live podcast, only you also get to watch a game while chatting with our awesome readers and viewers! We call this show Saturday Game School, because learning about new games is fun.

Tonight on Beam, we played Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, a delightful co-op game in which players work together to pilot a spaceship. Read on for quick impressions, contest winners, and the full video replay.

One of the best things about indie games is how different they are from the mainstream. Lovers takes place in a very different universe in which a machine called the Ardor Reactor allows explorers to travel the galaxy and unite its peoples with love. When the forces of Anti-Love manage to destroy the Ardor Reactor, it falls upon the heroic Lovers to put things right.

In Lovers, 1-4 players must pilot a spherical ship through exotic levels as they seek to rescue Space-bunnies and other hostages from their Anti-Love captors. Finding all the hostages in each randomly generated level will allow our heroes to escape to the next level and unlock new ships and upgrades.

Many play well in co-op, but Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime benefits from truly distinct cooperative design. One person can pilot the ship, but you can't attack or man the shield while piloting. That's where the other players (or an AI partner in single-player) come in. Each astronaut must scramble from station to station, cooperating to navigate and avoid danger amid barrages of enemy fire.

Lovers' cooperative nature also leads to its greatest weakness. Playing by yourself just isn't nearly as fun as bringing along a partner. When playing solo, you'll choose an AI co-pilot and assign it to various stations on the ship. But bossing around an imperfect AI doesn't feel nearly as good as working things out with a friend or three.

Even though we don't recommend Lovers as a solo game, it makes a perfect couples games. The delightfully cute setting and deep gameplay (with selectable difficulty levels) will appeal to friends and significant others like. Team up and share the love!

How to watch Beam livestreams

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime Xbox One

We're now streaming on Beam, Microsoft's interactive livestreaming platform. It provides some welcome improvements over Twitch, such as a cleaner website layout, built-in stream interactivity, and extremely low latency.

You can follow our channel at Beam.pro/WindowsCentral. From there, you'll be able to watch the stream and participate in chat directly from any web browser, including the Xbox One and Windows Phone browsers.

To receive email notifications when our Beam streams go live:

  1. First, follow our channel.
  2. Now select your profile from the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. Pick the Account option near the bottom of the menu.
  4. Go to the Notifications tab.
  5. Make sure Send me important email updates on the Beam platform is enabled. This option is labeled deceptively, but it's required for all forms of email notifications.
  6. Click or tap the Email box next to our channel name until a check appears. That's it!
  7. We highly recommend that you set a recurring alarm on your phone. Our weekend stream always starts at the same time (9pm Eastern/6pm Pacific), so the phone reminder can be very helpful.

Beam does not offer Xbox One or Windows Phone apps yet, so watching from the browser is the only option on Microsoft platforms. But Beam does offer apps on Android and iOS. Yes, that's a strange inequity. Native Xbox and Windows 10 support is coming though, so stick with us!
