Microsoft Garage launches curated news app for Xbox One

Your Xbox One might not be the first place you'd think to install a dedicated news app, but Microsoft's experimental Garage division is filling that niche. Called Your News, the Microsoft Garage project acts as an aggregator for curated, personalized news on your Xbox.

Microsoft is billing this as a hands-free experience, serving up headlines and MSN video content from a variety of sources. The goal, as described (opens in new tab) by the Vancouver team behind the app, is to give people a feed that they can turn on while they go about other activities around the house.

We helped to serve this by ensuring our users had the choice of which news they wanted to watch. They are provided with a list of news topics and sources personalized to their tastes, each of which provides a variety of news stories. If they'd like to watch passively, they can put the controller down and watch a continuous stream of stories. This is Your News, where users can watch news they are interested in, whenever they want.

Not a bad idea, particularly if you want quick access to topics you care about without any filler. In any case, if you want to give the app a shot, you can check out Your News on the Windows Store and download it to your Xbox One now.

  • Nice.
  • Not available worldwide
  • Looks like US only :)
  • I get it in Canada!  It's great!
  • It's made by the team at Microsoft Canada :)
  • I'm just shocked it isn't just for Android and Apple!
  • But it is just for America, so it's not totally un-Microsoft behaviour ;)
  • Agree. I was a bit shocked MS Garage actually made something for MS hardware.
  • Microsoft Canada supporting Canadians :)
  • I really want this new's app to have a dash section. Or at least allow us to customize it as a live tile.
It's pretty good, and it needs Cortana integration.
  • This is what Garage should do! An app for Windows ecosystem, not ios, not android.
  • Well... I don't mind them doing it for iOS and Android as well for as long as W10 wouldn't be served as a lackluster afterthought.
  • How to install this? I'm in US and when I go to the download page it is greyed out and says "this app does not work on your device"
  • Same here can't download it either.
  • I'm in Canada and can get this app. Switch to Canada or UK and then download it
  • Windows Central should have and Xbox app.
  • Very true
  • Don't ever become dependent on Garage stuff. Sure, looks great and proves concepts that are possible...but my family and our Windows Phones became too accustomed to using Squadwatch (and people loved it) then BAM...they dropped it like the Band 2 (at least we didn't pay for Squadwatch). But seriously...these guys just toy around programming, but are not committed to upkeeping this stuff long-term, so Buyer (Installer) Beware...
  • Yeah, that's what the Garage-app descriptions say... They are just free-time experiments.
  • News on Xbox - people game to get away from the News and the real world....IMHO
