Microsoft releases a substantial update for Glance Screen on Lumia Windows Phones

Microsoft has today released an update for Glance on supported Lumia Windows Phones. There's no change log located on the Store when updating the system app, but luckily a few readers were able to catch some new additions.

As well as expecting the usual bug fixes and improvements to be bundled with each subsequent update, it appears 3.1.0.21 also adds support for Health and Fitness and MSN Weather, enabling both apps to display information on the lockscreen. Not only that, but there are a few changes which can be checked out in the images below.

Do note that not all Lumia Windows Phones support Glance. Let us know in the comments if you've noticed anything else. We've been unable to test the new update (all my remaining Lumia phones don't support Glance), so we'll update you all when we know more.

  • Weather is nice
  • I didn't get the weather. How did you get it?
  • Select MSN Weather on lock screen and open the app once to have weather on glance...
  • I didn't get the weather thing , how did you get the weather on glance ?
  • Did you open glance from settings menu?
  • I did and restarted but no use
  • It worked now !
  • can u please say how it worked now?is it possible to set any photo as glance background?
  • I have set weather as the background app but all I see is the sun blue sky and no detail..
  • It takes a few minutes to kick in. And even when it does, only in regular - not night - mode. It will then display for a number of seconds and disappear, leaving just the regular stuff. Wave your handover the screen to redisplay the weather info
  • Im sorry but, it doesn't work for sh*t. U would at least expect it works a 100% not half ass after the update. On all My Wphones, it does not work even after 30 minutes.
  • After setting MSN Weather as your lockscreen app, turn of Background apps in Glance settings. Then open MSN Weather app and click on settings and Lockscreen and make sure it is set to Lockscreeen IN the MSN Weather app. Works perfect for me on my 1520.
  • That's because our 1520's are the Gods of Windows Phone. No other Wphone has all of the options. The One True Flagship.
  • Works great on my Lumia 1020, which also is a god.
  • Glance screen, weather app, notifications, etc. all work as they should on my Lumia 1520, 830, and 1020
  • Thanks, ill try it few more times. I also have a 1520, nothing on there. :/ my two 1020's nothing, 620 nothing :D
  • Works fine on my 620 :) Only now I have to make a new glance screen bacground, because it interferes with the weather :D
  • It works as per above procedure. Only in the end you need to turnon background app in glance screen settings.
  • Chill out. There is a specific way/order you have to set it up in to get it to work. Other people have stated this in the comments. I had issues till I updated both apps then turn off background apps in glance then went into msn weather and turned the lock screen on within the weather app itself. Then back to glance to turn on background apps. Then close out and reopen msn weather.
  • It does work on my lumia 822.  The weather on the glance screen disappears after 10 seconds or so.  It will appear again when you move your hand over the glance screen.  Go in to the settings/glance and click the button for lock screen app.  It takes a few minutes but worked ok on mine.  hope that helps
  • Dude i tried what you mentioned but still no use... Does lumia 720 support msn weather on glance screen?
  • yes it does i have glance on my 720 screen with weather info also
  • Do you live in Southern California? ;)
  • if you have moved the weather application to storage card from device storage it will display sun and the blue screen i reasearched a lot and finally i tried to moved the application back to storage then i went to lock screen selected weather and then clicked open app waited for 3 seconds and bingo hit the jackpot i hope this works for you too as i researched and asked many people nobody said and gave me this answer let me know if that fixed your problem would love to know that if that works for you too Thanks Amit Dubey
  • Wam1q , the msn weather isn't shown the lock screen apps , what should I do ?
  • First you download the Weather app from store and install it dude....... ;) It will surely be shown in lock screen apps...... :)
  • It's just 'Weather'. Not MSN Weather in lock screen settings.
  • Download Weather(Microsoft)
Now after it has installed go to settings and then lock screen select in background there the Weather App. Open the weather, set your location etc. Wait for a min. or two it will be on your start scree.
  • Already have it installed in my L1320 but still it isn't showing the option for weather or any kind in the lockscreen background list.
Can anyone help me with this one?
  • you have to make sure you have weather set as background instead of a picture in your lock screen settings. its buggy though as it will show up on glance then disappear again
  • I think this may be intentional. Just hold your hand over the IR sensor and it will show the weather info again.
  • It's really irritating that you have to give up your whole lock screen to get detailed status on the glance screen. I should be able to continue seeing my family on the lock screen while still seeing detailed weather overlayed and available on the glance screen. I guess I won't be using this feature.
  • I agree with you. Am not gonna use it. Instead of this, they could have added whether in the "quick status" apps list.
  • True
  • the problem with that is you lose glance screen calendar.  I hate this whole 'choose one thing or the other' nonsense.  Hope W10 allows fully-customisable lock screen and glance; independant of each other.  What if I want weather on glance but not lock?
  • Exactly.
  • Agreed
  • 100% agreed. Lock screen shouldn't be tied to glance. I like having the Bing/Live/MSN pic of the day
  • Totally agreed...
  • Does Lumia 720 support MSN weather display on glance screen?
  • Yes, It will support, install MSN weather app then first off background app option in glance settings (if it is on). Open weather app and set it as lock screen and return back to glance settings and on background app. After 2 or 3 minutes you can see the weather details on ur glance screen.
  • I think you have to install a compatible weather app, like MSN Weather. Then it will show up. Working fine on my 925 :)
  • Not working on my 925.. :(
  • You probably didn't receive the update yet I was having the same problem until I checked the store and updated manually
  • Wow so now it's basically the normal lock screen... What's the difference??
  • And if you use Glance Background Beta, you can have a background instead of the black screen. A complete lock screen at a glance!
  • Yeah but why is Nokia (MS) doing this? They program an app whose functionality already exists...
They could just tell Microsoft that the lock screen should be unlockable via double tap, and that's it!
  • I wave my hand over my phone to view glance. No need to push buttons or tap anything.
  • MS could update the lock screen a little and glance would be useless...
  • Glance uses less battery than lock screen and works without touching the phone. It is not useless.
  • People on this site like to be dramatic. "Useless" has come to mean "something that I don't like and want to whine about".
  • Once you've gone "Glance" you'll never go back! It's the sole reason I refrained from the Lumia icon. 928 owner.
  • glance is an optional feature, but admittedly, a lot of people use it because they wish their phones had a notification LED.
  • Yeah exactly. The great thing is that you can bake or cook, do other household chores and be all "sticky fingers", air swipe the phone to check for missed calls, read the latest message sent to you, see if there are any new e-mail arrivals, WPCentral notifications, etc. It's customizable too.  Okay sure, not just household chores. You might sit in a garage and make some repairs on your car, be all greasy and messy but still you're able to check your phone which is set to silent mode in order not to disturb. I think you get the idea by now :-)  Short story: See everything at a glance without having to press, hold or tap the phone in situations when you rather not want to.
  • Well said!
  • Hey, I think ALWAYS ON doesn't work... I guess always on means that the glance screen will always be on, but it doesn't works, the screen always times out.
  • Is your battery low? Even if Glance is set to always on, it will not show if your battery is in "battery saver" mode.
  • Battery is around 91% but still the Glance shows a Shield kind of logo, which means the battery saver is on... which actually isn't...
  • I like glance beacuse I can have my phone the wireless charger and not have to touch it or move it to see if I have any messages
  • this is true.  Cortana on certain models could do things remotely too but glance is still superior for noisy environments. and uses less battery than cortana does by listening for input.
  • I have mine set to "Always on." I don't notice much of a difference in battery life and it shuts off when it is in my pocket.
  • On Interval setting, I like that I can take it out of my pocket and glance at the screen for the time/date/calendar without having to hit a power button or anything. Probably my favourite feature of Lumia's (with Glance).
  • Glance Screen can be set up so that it's ALWAYS on, as long as you don't have it in your pocket (blocking the camera). It consumes very, very little battery (especially on Amoled displays). So you can have the phone on your desk, permanently displaying the time (and other info) so you can just glance at it and keep working /playing/etc. Hence GLANCE Screen.
  • But can you have both? A wallpaper + weather data?
  • Yes.  Looks just fine on my screen.  (Might depend on the wallpaper, though.  Mine is one of the stock images, so there's no problem reading the white text in front.)
  • This is for the Glance Screen, not the lock screen. ;) Though, I haven't figured out if you can do both the Live Lockscreen app and the Weather app though, which bites.
  • Now you must unlock your phone 2 times!
  • @crise Will you elaborate please? You're comment is without merit unless you can prove otherwise.
  • This is a great update - but says not supported for 930.
  • Because 930 doesn't support glance.....
  • Apparently it never will be, thanks to Micronokia balking at paying a few extra doubloons to give their flagship phone screen memory. Eejits.
  • A screen with a memory would have costed them 999999$
  • What a joke, how much could an SD reader and this extisting memory chip add to the cost. It's already a $600 phone
  • That's why the grossly under-promoted 925 is a superior phone. [ducks for cover]
  • Just wait for the 935 that'll come out soon ;)
  • I've a 925 and would love to upgrade to a 930 for the better camera, processor, memory, etc. But without glance & being a bit bulky I'm holding off for a 935.
  • Why head for cover? We can take em :P
  • I see you!!!!
  • This update came and m getting L730 -_-
  • That's why I passed on the Icon and kept with my Lumia 928. @Ali Sanaei Glance is a must have for me. Even before this major update.
  • And then they call 930 a flagship.. :| 1520 is a true WP flagship. It rules ✌
  • Can anyone confirm if this update still works with Glance Background Beta? That'll be amazing.
  • Yup! Still works. Looks amazing on my Lumia 1020.
  • Yes, "Glance Background Beta" still works with this Update.
  • For me it works but the weather info disappears after 15 seconds or so. Does anyone else have the same issue?
  • Yeah its set like that I guess... But the detailed status is placed at the bottom that's good... Before it was at the top...
  • Yes it is separate to the time/date. I like it like that. Looks more dynamic.
  • My 1020 now doesn't show glance background, really annoyed
  • Why can't they give glance to my 8X :S
  • Ask HTC...
  • Great for the devices that support it!
  • +1020 AMOLED
  • It looks amazing on the Lumia 925. Day and date addition is a welcome change.
  • +1020
  • Yes indeed. I would always have to go to the lock screen to figure out what day of the month it is. I am thrilled about that addition and the updated Glance looks AMAZING on the 1520 as well. I always have my Lumias and 808 PureView/Nokia N8 on my desk to see the time so this updated glance for Windows Phone is simply stunning and extremely useful. I need to see my calendar events as I work in IT and right now my Glance screen shows:   Normal Partly Cloudy 56 F 63|34      SAT 52|38   SUN 60|40   10:02 Friday October 3   Event 11504 - (Technician Name) CCB 2012 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM 1 Email           4 Emails         2 Emails   Extremely useful! There is so much real world value in owning a Lumia that has Glance.
  • Yes! Tbh...quite surprised because I remember a wee while back that they said support would end and it would remain in beta?
  • +820
  • Have background sites still work! I also noticed the name has changed to glance screen instead of just glance. Not that it is that important
  • +1020
  • Somehow..weather is not showing up here ... Sad.. Any tricks for 1520?
  • Go to lock screen settings. Make sure you select MSN Weather for your lock screen. Open the app once and it should work then.
  • I did the same. Restarted the app restarted my phone(Lumia 820) But its not working for the glance screen.
  • Did you go to glance screen settings? It will ask you to restart.
  • Yes! Did that immediately after the update.
  • Well, I did the same. I opened glance settings, restarted, but didn't get weather. Then I went to lock screen settings and clicked on 'open app' to open MSN Weather. Without closing the app, I locked the screen and boom! Weather on my glance. Really love it on my 1020's AMOLED screen.
  • Okay! I'll try it again.
  • It's the top setting, usually has "photo" as the option. ;)
  • Work on my Lumia 820, thanks Bro!!
  • Other than weather I remember there were few apps that give some information like Quotes, Facebook, etc on the lock screen.... It would be awesome if it works with glance
  • Yeah it's a bit fiddly. I restarted a couple of times and it still didn't show. I removed it from the Lock Screen, then replaced it and then it wasn't even on the Lock Screen. Eventually I went into the app from my pinned tile and then it loaded the weather data again and finally it displayed on the Lock Screen and Glance. Nice. Gotten to the point where it's just a B&W version of the Lock Screen.
  • You can even have a background photo (coloured too) using 'Glance Background Beta'. A complete lock screen, actually.
  • It wasn't working for me also, but I did this: - settings>background app (turn it of and then on again) - go to thw weather app and refresh (you'll find it in settings) It now works for me :-)
  • Your sure you have GDR1
  • Works without GDR1
  • Would really like this on my 930.
  • Sorry! Glance is not available for the 930 because of hardware limitations.
  • I think there should exist a software trick to overcome that limitation
  • Glance works by "saving" the information to the screen memory. So when you are looking at the glance screen, you're not firing up the main cpu cores, saving a LOT of battery. Since it uses a piece of hardware (screen memory), there isn't any software to replace that hardware, at least not any that would have any benefit over just looking at your "regular" lock screen.
  • Couldn't they offer a simulated glance option then at least? Let us tick a box which basically shows us the lock screen automatically similar to what glance does?
  • So, how that screen memory updates the date/time without accesing main CPU? Also, how is Glance affected by the proximity sensor if (AFAIK) that sensor is also controlled by the main CPU?
  • I Changed the background app to Weather. It now shows Weather on the Lock Scree but not on the glance screen.
  • See above.
  • Did that! Not working. Which device do you have?
  • Lumia 1020
  • Doesn't work for me either on 920
  • Did you open glance settings from settings menu?
  • I think its buggy. Should be updated soon.
  • yep straight after the update. i've changed lock screen source app, cycled all the settings in glance, restared phone... nada. does not show weather info on glance.
  • Try clicking on 'open app' from lock screen settings to open MSN Weather and lock the screen. That's how I got it working.
  • Tried that too... no dice.
  • There is a slight possibility that you're a bit quick in opening and quitting apps. You might wanna make sure you open the app, wait for like 20 seconds for it to load everything up in the background, then close the app using the go back button (<-––). If you wait up to 20 seconds for each step, it might work. I also think the go back button will save settings you make, compared to using the Windows Logo button which in some cases might not save it, just put it in the background for later use (?).
  • It's working on my 920..
  • It's working for my 920
  • Having same issue on my 920 also. And I have all the latest and greatest updates from the Preview for Devs on my phone.
  • It took sometime to shows up on my l920.
  • Turn off night mode
  • isn't there any way to get the glance on 520 ? :|
  • No... :(
  • The only way is to get a new phone (just kidding)
  • Bout friggin time!
  • I really don't understand how hard to write a change log can be.
  • my words!!

  • wait..MS will be sending an invite for this..
  • Hahahaha!!
  • I agree, but then you have to translate it to like... 200 languages!!
  • It would spoil the suspense!
  • That delights me. But my battery life seems get worse. Poor little 925......
  • I love how Nokia, and now Microsoft, always say that something is coming with a firmware update and in the end this come just as a app update...
  • I remember it was rumoured to come with Denim...
  • Not rumored, but officially announced.
  • I have it with Lumia Black and it works great!
  • Hi, how do you get the most recent glance version on Black?
  • Because it MAY need a firmware update. Mostrly compatibility or battery issues...
  • after the update it is not showing any options under glance screen... Just blank screen :(
  • Restart your Phone.
  • Same here, just blank. I've restarted, soft reset my phone... :(
  • My poor 625
  • L625 :(
  • +620
  • Why can't they release glance to all the windows phone devices
  • Because glance screen stores data on the memory of the display itself. And not on the phones memory. For glance they will have to install those displays on every phones and not every type of display is supported. Or they have to re design the glance app in a different API
  • Like many annoying things Microsoft does, it's a choice. While glance on an unsupported device would drain the battery in no time, providing an option -- even if only whil
