New YouTube update brings suggestions to Windows Mobile app

Google today took the lid of an update for its Windows Mobile YouTube app, taking it up to Version 2.4 and bringing a few new features online.

There are now search suggestions (which you see above), along with "My Account" settings and a new homescreen that's redesigned for larger screens.

Head on over to m.youtube.com/app to download the latest version. [Google Mobile]

  • And for the record: That's Google's screen shot. I didn't go search for Britney Spears. Or Brittany Murphy. Or that dancer I met in Las Vegas -- erm, never mind.
  • I'm looking forward to trying the new version, but for the record, the old version displayed suggestions as well.
  • This seems like a huge step in the wrong direction. Doesn't play the videos as well, doesn't look as good and doesn't seem to be a way to bookmark videos.
  • hmm, it looks like it's worse than youtube app that comes with my TP2..(that app version is 2.5).
videos with that app are much smoother, both in playback speed and picture quality.
google's "official" app above makes videos look much worse.
  • I agree 100%. Hopefully when I uninstall this official app the one that was on my TP2 is still there. I have a feeling the one delivered with the phone was hardware accelerated.
  • I made the mistake of thinking Google's YouTube app might be better than the one that comes with the TP2. When you install Google's, you lose the link to the HTC's one in the All Programs list (meaning, even if you uninstall Google's, you won't get HTC's back). The HTC YouTube app is still in the Windows folder of the phone, so you could open up File Explorer, make a shortcut to it, and put that shortcut in another folder so that you don't have to keep loading the Windows folder to get at it (seriously, does other people's phone take forever to load that folder?). Unless someone found a way, the only way to get it back on the All Programs list is to restore the phone to factory default or do/redo the upgrade to WM6.5 (which, luckily for me, is what I did since I was running WM6.1 at the time). Hopefully, the HTC YouTube app is brought to Google's attention and they start building off of that one instead of continuing with this version. With the HTC one, as mizzourob was getting at, hopefully, they should add log-in capabilities, so you can keep up with your subscriptions and other things. Also, they should add a way to view/add comments, rate videos, view full video descriptions, and allow sorting, like by date or whatever.
  • New Youtube looks great, I think
  • I like this YouTube app. They made good efforts to reformat the app properly whether you have a portrait, landscape or square screen. It responds to touchscreen or keypad-based navigation. I found video quality decent - still better than when played through Windows Media Player, and there are finally "My Account" features. Now, if it could only allow search results to be sorted by upload date, I wouldn't need to use desktop YouTube as often.
  • I think some of you may be comparing this Google version to the HTC version, currently at v2.6.
  • I wish there either the TP2 youtube app or this one would display my unwatched subscriptions so I can stay up-to-date with all the channels that I subscribe to regardless if I'm near my laptop or not.
  • When you type into the YouTube search box, you get relevant suggestions. This saves on typing which is especially useful for mobile phones where text input may be difficult.
