OverDrive Media Console gets updated

OverDrive Media Console is an eBook reader for your Windows Phone which has been recently updated. It's a cross platform app that is also available on the iOS and Android platforms that taps into over 18,000 public libraries worldwide.

Digital titles from the library are borrowed and have expiration dates. Very similar to the due dates on printed books that you check out from your local library. If a title is already checked out, you can be placed on a waiting list and alerted once the title becomes available.

The version 2.42 update adds background downloads, new zoom options for images within the eBooks, improvements to the Wikipedia and dictionary look-ups, continuous playbook for audio books and the customary under-the-hood tweaks to improver performance.

OverDrive Media Console is a free app for your Windows Phone and you can grab it here (opens in new tab) at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

  • I was going to use this app. . . But then I remembered I owe the library $50 lol. . .
I think it also does video if your library offers it.
  • So wait, they have digital versions of books that have waiting lists? What am I missing here?
  • I'm sure it has to do with licensing. The publishers probably only want so many digital copies active at a certain time.
  • The app still doesn't play WMA files...on a WINDOWS Phone. Most of the audio books I'm interested in come as WMA files. Shouldn't getting a Microsoft format supported on a Microsoft OS-based app be pretty simple??
  • Indeed
  • George do you know if checking out books at the Hoover Public Library is possible with this app?
  • The Hoover Library is listed under two accounts.  Through the JeffCo County Library Cooperative and Camellia Net Digital Catalog.  Just search for Hoover and they'll pop up.
  • I like the app, very clean and usable...
However I'd like to see it get the capability of being able to grab Audio/Digital Books from your SkyDrive account too.
I have a few reference books and audio books that I've purchased and yet I'm finding it hard to get a good app that 'reads' what I have.
If anyone has suggestions that I may have missed in the MarketPlace?
  • I like the app, and it works with both library systems I use. My only real gripe is that the checkout process is over-complicated.
