PhotoSmile is a Windows 10 photography app that hopes to eliminate frowns and sad faces from your photos by only allowing you to snap a picture when the app detects a smiling face.
Available for both Windows 10 PC and Mobile, as well as Windows Phone 8.1, the app has a user-friendly design and does a decent job of picking up smiles. The ad-free version of PhotoSmile normally runs $4.99 and for the next twenty-four hours through the myAppFree promotion, you can pick the app up free.
PhotoSmile greets you with a tutorial overlay on the camera viewfinder detailing the on-screen controls. These controls include a share button, flash on/off control, camera toggle (front/rear cameras), a button to review your photos, a three-dot button to access the About information and the camera button.
Controls shift as you rotate the camera's viewfinder from portrait to landscape orientation. If you need to revisit the tutorial layout, it can be accessed from the three-dot menu at the bottom of the viewfinder.
The selling point with PhotoSmile is that the camera shutter button only works when the app detects a smile. As you frame up a photo, your subject's face is detected and their mouth highlighted with a red box. When a smile is detected, the red box turns green and you can take the picture. If you are photographing multiple subjects, PhotoSmile picks up on everyone's smile.
When we reviewed PhotoSmile, the Windows 10 app came across as a nice photo app to have tucked in your photography library. We would have liked for the photo to be taken automatically when a smile is detected and the lag time issue seems to have gotten better.
PhotoSmile is regularly priced at $4.99 and available for both Windows 10 PC and Mobile, along with Windows Phone 8.1 (low-memory devices are not supported). However, through today's myAppFree Deal you can pick up the Windows 10 app free. It is a great opportunity to pick up a handy app and save a bit along the way.
