Sea of Thieves to get major combat tweaks, watch Inside Xbox for details on February 5

Sea of Thieves is an exploration-based pirate game that features great sailing mechanics, but the open-ended plot doesn't appeal to everyone. You have to find your own path and that doesn't sit well with those who prefer single-player experiences. Luckily, developer Rare is aware of these problems and Executive Producer Joe Neate promised a substantial overhaul of the quest system at the Fun & Serious Festival in Bilbao, Spain.

That's not all though. Today, Neate stated that the combat system was also getting substantially tweaked. Parameters like knockback, how swords work, how bullets work, and other intricate combat mechanics will be improved for a smoother experience. You can hear him discuss this in the developer diary below. Also, keep in mind that this update will hit in the near future, so don't expect it when the "reduce size" patch lands on February 6, 2019.

Neate added that more information about Sea of Thieves would be presented during the Inside Xbox show taking place on February 5. Hopefully the team will provide a release date for "The Arena" update and give us a taste of the new quests and lore system. However, the introduction of a proper single-player campaign would be nice, too.

Sea of Thieves is currently available for $59.99 through various retailers, but it's free for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. The title runs at native 4K resolution on Xbox One X. The game started off as a rather barebones experience when it first launch, but due to excellent post-launch support, Rare has managed to turn it around.

  • The PvE combat needs to tone it down, between the kraken, sharks, and gunpowder skellies in droves playing solo has become too harsh
  • Really? I just played for 1.5 hours. Only one gunpowder skelly. The world would feel bare without the interactions. I don’t think they need to tone it down. Sharks are docile anyway 😝
  • Yeah, it's a bit full on for solo play, but in a team it's a real rush when you are battling a meg and suddenly a skelly ship pops up right next to you. Hell, it's even a rush solo, a rush to see how quickly you can bail out of there.

  • I recommend getting Game Pass to anyone even slightly interested in SoT.
  • Well, maybe people prefer to buy their game instead of renting it.
    Having said that, since it's a multiplayer only game on XB1 it's already a rented game even if you pay full price for it.
