Sprint Samsung Intrepid hands-on

Here was the big surprise today! The Sprint Samsung Intrepid is basically the Jack but for CDMA.

  • Windows Mobile 6.5
  • 3.2MP camera
  • Tell Me voice control
  • 320x240
  • aGPS/GPS
  • 3.5mm (on top)

The keyboard was pretty good on it, though there is no space between the keys, so it is a bit cramped. The screen is a bit odd at that resolution, but it seems to work. The Start menu has four rows, allowing it a lot to fit on the screen.

The device was speedy to use and seemed like a nice middle of the road front-facing QWERTY device. Will it beat out a Treo Pro? Tough call, but I do like the minimalist look of the Treo Pro better. Still, this seems like a compelling device and Samsung has been quite successful with this line so far.

This particular Windows phone will be available Oct. 11 on Sprint.

More pics after the jump!

  • why isnt tellme in the marketplace?
  • No one knows yet. Perhaps it awaiting approval, like many other apps, or maybe MS is only building it in ROMs for specific devices. Will just have to wait and see.
  • that is one sexy phone! I want it! Glad to hear that it has 3.5 mm jack too.
  • "basically the Jack but for CDMA" I'd say WM 6.5 Pro (vs. the Jack's 6.1 Standard) is a pretty big difference!
  • 6.5 vs 6.1 really isn't that big of a difference. Plus, now that the Jack is slated for an (official) 6.5 upgrade, Mal's statement is going to be even more valid.
  • But you still have the Professional-Standard disparity. Major Difference.
  • How big is the battery on this baby?!
  • 1480 mAh which should pretty well.
  • I'd say the Intrepid compares more to the Epix than to the Jack. Windows Mobile 6.5 Standard should've been named Windows Mobile 6.1.1. There's no way anyone will mistake a Jack running that so called version 6.5 from the Intrepid, which runs the Professional 6.5 - the real deal. I actually like the Intrepid a lot. A new QWERTY-bar WinMo Professional device with every key and button needed to make touchscreen use optional is like hardware nirvana to me. That said, Sprint = no signal in my house and many other places I go so I'm not getting this device.
  • Does this use the Samsung proprietary power jack or micro usb? Thanks.
  • is there autofocus in camera to make closeups?
  • I don't think so, but not 100% either. When we do a full review we'll look into that.
  • yes does it have mico, mini usb or Samsung crap jack? Is the screen physically larger than the Treo 800w?
  • Sorry, didn't get to check the plug. Only had the phone in hand for a short while (Microsoft demo unit); but we'll probably have a full review on the phone soon. The screen is 2.5" on both Treo Pro and Intrepid, but the Intrepid has less resolution/pixels since it is 320x240.
  • No front-facing camera on this device?
    Status/notifications LED?
  • yes just like the jack but.. it is touch screen, i know its wm pro but Mal should of at least mentioned it
  • It's micro usb (I know I'm two + months late)
