Windows 10 Gems: Print from anywhere with Staples for Office

With Windows 10 Gems!

With support from Microsoft (opens in new tab)

Printing used to mean putting files on a USB stick, going to the store, plugging it in, and then printing. It was awkward. Now, I can just send it to Staples right from the document.

Staples for Office

Add to Office (opens in new tab)

Printers are one of those pieces of technology that many of us used to have until the nearly all paperless digital age happened. While printing your tickets to a concert or a flight used to be a thing these days more people are opting just to use an app. Still, there are those moments where you have to print something, sign it, and even mail it. Or maybe your company still prefers something in writing.

The new Print to Staples add-in for Office solves these printing problems by simply letting you send your document to a local Staples location. Due to its convenience and let's face it, smart idea, I'm going to tell you all about it.

How it works

Like all of the new Office add-ins you can pick up the Print to Staples one right from the Office Store. You can follow our direct link or just go to and search for Staples. Just hit the 'Add' button and the Store will prompt you to log in with your Office account. Since this add-in does not use Outlook you do not need to have your account migrated.

Once you have the Staples add-in Installed you can use it for Office online (Word, PowerPoint) or in the desktop versions of those apps including Word and PowerPoint 2013 and 2016.

After that the add-in a breeze to use. For example, just open up a document that you are ready to print. You can find the Print to Staples add-in by following these easy steps:

  • Select Insert from the Toolbar Ribbon
  • Choose My Add-ins
  • Double-click Print to Staples

Now, you should have a paned window slide out from the right-edge of the screen. Just choose from the different styles of printing, such as

  • Economy ($0.09 a page)
  • Standard ($0.12 a page)
  • Premium ($1.71 and up)
  • Executive ($4.51 and up)

Premium and Executive options get you color printing, binding cover or coil, and a transparent plastic/black vinyl cover. In other words, you're not paying $4.50 for a single page of paper, but rather you are getting something that would like an official document professionally printed. Not bad! (I really could have used something like this in college for those term papers).

By hitting Next, you are taken to a Staples locator page. Just type in your city, state, or zip code and from the list pick the Staples store you would like to send the job. You get all sorts of useful information too, including the distance of the store, its phone number, and crucially store hours.

Finally, just type in your name, email, and phone number and hit Order Now. You do not make any payment online — instead, you pay when you pick your prints up.

That's it. Such a simple tool for what is an invaluable job.

Send it to the press

I'm quite impressed by this add-in from Staples. Even a few years ago, if you didn't have a printer but did live near a Staples, printing meant loading your file onto a USB drive, driving to the Staples, plugging it into the Staples system, trying to find the file through their proprietary system, and going through that whole awkward process at a store. Now, I can just send it to a Staples store right from the document, go to the store, and pay and pick it up.

Folks, this is getting too easy now. I think this add-in is perfect for students, business professionals, and frankly anyone who needs to print things even if it's once every year. The add-in costs nothing, and it sure beats going out and buying a whole printer for something you may not even need that often. Even better, this can totally save you in a pinch if you run out of ink in the middle of the night.

So grab this (and other) Office add-ins and make your life easier!

  • I've gone 99% digital for photos, occasionally printing a photo in the form of a homemade greeting card. For docs, I'm about 20% print and 80% digital. The 20% is for those who absolutely have to have a printed copy and won't go digital. #sweepstakes
  • We still print photos.  My wife likes to change the pictures in the frames around the house farily frequently.  Turns out just printing them on normal copy paper is good enough and quite a bit cheaper than getting actual photo prints done.  #sweepstakes
  • Well, I'm apart of my school's student body, So I print documents often. #sweepstakes
  • Great!
  • Gone completely digital. I don't print because photos/documents take too much space and too much paper. I can view everything on the computer much quicker and easier. #sweepstakes
  • What happens when you need to sign an important document?  Do you actually drive to the bank / lawyers / accountant's / real estate / government office to do that?
  • You know these days you can "Electronically" Sign papers;)
  • Only if the form is created with that capability, and to be honest that's still pretty rare.  I can see the average person not needing a printer, but in business (even a home based business) you still definitely need a printer.
  • I'm mostly all digital at the moment whether it's documents for work or pictures I typically keep everything digital it's easier and faster to share with friends family or people at work #sweepstakes
  • I print documents, but rarely print photos.  I'm mostly digital and print when needed. #sweepstakes
  • Still print documents,  #sweepstakes
  • At home I am all digital, at work about 90% Digital  #sweepstakes
  • This will be agreat feature when traveling on business. #sweepstakes
  • This would have been great for my undergraduate thesis. Love this though #sweepstakes
  • I wouldn't even be able to use this because I work at a competitor store lol
  • You can't buy things from a competitor store?
  • I still print tons of photos of my kids! Hard copies are still great.  #sweepstakes
  • And more personal. :)
  • I'm pretty much all digital now. I only print when I need to.
  • I still print photos because it's just some so nostalgic about holding a photograph in your hand, and looking back at the memories. I do digital sometimes because it's easier to post them on social media.   #sweepstakes
  • I still print documents and photos.  #sweepstakes
  • I prefer everything digital now, easier to see stuff across all devices :) #sweepstakes
  • Mostly digital but its nice to have photos to hold, digital can't replace that. #sweepstakes
  • Never print - once in a while I'll have something done on canvas though.   #sweepstakes
  • I print some photos, mostly pitcures of the kids for the extended family AND i store everything in the cloud. #sweepstakes
  • I try to be digital all the time...but we still deal with entreprise who use a fax in the US. We have a printer/scanner at home. It's to easy to use, I don't like it,  Ink and paper waste. If realy needed I should uesd Staples service. #sweepstakes
  • I've been all digital for years. I'd almost convinced my wife to not print anything (17 pages in all of 2013, woot!). Then my daughter was born. So many cartridges, so much money... #sweepstakes
  • Digital photos #sweepstakes
  • I print digital photos if they're from important events, i.e.; weddings, vacations etc. #sweepstakes
  • Photos I'll upload to and pick them up there.  Way cheaper (and better quality) than printing photos at home.
  • I am all digitial! #sweepstakes
  • I only print my pictures and doc from my printer , it's the best way for me to know for sure how they look and if I like them #sweepstakes
  • Digital photos, print and digital for documents. #sweepstakes
  • I use my printer almost every day.  It's nothing personal, just business.
  • i only go digital as far as pictures go!  #sweepstakes
  • mostly digital, except documents for elders. #sweepstakes
  • I print documents all the time but rarely print photos anymore.  My wife will occasionally print a bunch when there is a sale somewhere on printing but that isn't too often. This is an entry in the sweepstakes #sweepstakes
  • Printing photos is too expensive so those I leave in a digital format.  Documents, however, I do print. #sweepstakes
  • You can print 4x6 at Walmart for 10cents.
  • Crazy expensive
  • I use my printer ALL the time! I will love using this app, THANKS! #sweepstakes
  • Crazy expensive #sweepstakes
  • My goal is to start printing photos once I have a child.  There's something unique about having an actual photobook, one that people can sit down and flip through.  It becomes a collection of your favorite moments and not just the 150+ random shots you took on vacation and uploaded to Facebook. #sweepstakes
  • I print thank you cards and photos. #sweepstakes
  • I still occasionally print photos for the holidays to give to other family members. #sweepstakes
  • haven't printed anything in a long time #sweepstakes.
  • Yes I still print photo and documents, and find it very convenient to send documents and photos to my local Staples location for pick-up. #Sweepstakes
  • We still print. It's an easy way to share and there's something about actually holding something. We do a lot digitally, but having a printed record is nice at times. Also a good way to share photos with kids without having to give them an electronic device. #sweepstakes
  • i'm trying to go 100% digital. if i receive any paper that i want to keep a record of, i scan it. if its sensitive, its then shredded. if its not, its then thrown out. no paper for me. #sweepstakes
  • I still have to print documents at times - no photos though  #sweepstakes
  •  #sweepstakes Mainly digital! find it easier to keep everything together!
  • I still print some photos.    #sweepstakes
  • Once in a while a print is necessary. Most of the time photos are more of a journal/documentation experience rarely to be looked at again. #sweepstakes
  • I love printing out pictures, so that I can put them in frames around my home, cause I don't always have access (or time) to a computer, but when I do, pictures are being printed.  #Sweepstakes  #DoMoreEveryDay
  • Im mostly digital but that is a fault.  I need to be better about getting stuff on paper!.  #sweepstakes
  • I still print photos, especially things I want to remember (wedding, baby pictures). It's hard to sit down and watch the computer or tv of photos from these events, but a photo book is not replaceable by my computer's hard drive and photo viewer. Similar to my music, I like to purchase the CD instead of downloading music. Hard copies > digital. Digital is really only good for transferrable backups. #sweepstakes
  • I still print but not often. And if I ever do print a photo it s because it is in a document. #sweepstakes
  • I use mine everyday for crafts or school or for home projects:) #Sweepstakes
  • Still own a printer but really hate buying multiple inks for $$$ that eventually dry up from non-use.  Still have printer on it's last.  For important stuff, I've farmed out my printing.  Having this app would make that very easy, especially when it comes to printing out a manuscript.  Thanks. #sweepstakes
  • I have a ton of photos on a hard drive that I need to look through and print! #sweepstakes
  • I still print photos here but usually only in larger sizes for framing and hanging. Only print socuments when i have to. #sweepstakes
  • As a tech, manager and self employed - I printed all the time. Now not so much #sweepstakes.
  • I still print certain things. Sometimes I need to see a hard copy. #sweepstakes
  • Still print #sweepstakes
  • #Sweepstakes Still print pictures at times
  • I don't print pictures at home. #sweepstakes
  • I still print important documents for safe keeping and special photos for my albums. #sweepstakes
  • I keep it all digital unless for a specific purpose.  #Sweepstakes
  • I do a little of both! #Sweepstakes
  • I keep them digital but my wife loves to print them. #sweepstakes.
  • I'm still anchored in the old school.  Anything important, picture or document, gets printed.  I can't get past the thought that I'm one power surge, or one component failure, away from losing irreplaceable material and thousands of hours of work.  I'd like to trust the cloud, but someone owns that cloud, that cloud operates under some government, and that cloud owner always has enemies somewhere.  And if someone feels the need to snoop through my files, they need to show probable cause and get a warrant, as the U.S. Constitution demands.    #sweepstakes
  • I mostly have gone digital, but do print on occasion to send photos to relatives and friends... #sweepstakes
  • Used to print photos, all digital now.  Ocasionally will print for older relatives who shun the digital age. Still print some documents now and then. This could be useful if I lived closer to a Staples. #sweepstakes
  • I do not print photos but I still print documents #sweepstkakes
  • I do both but most things are digital #sweepstakes
  • pretty much all digital #sweepstakes
  • I am "old school" and print most everything just in case ... I have had my harddrive crash. I pay the Geek Squad at Best Buy to recover what they can. I have lost numerous photos. #Sweepstakes
  • Print a small amount of documents, no pictures #sweepstakes
  • In general, I don't print photos anymore...but on some occasion, depending on the event, I will print pictures out for a photo album or something nice like that.  #sweepstakes
  • Completely digitial  #sweepstakes
  • Almost never print anymore.  #sweepstakes
  • Still print most things - I like having ink bills #sweepstakes
  • I print occasionally for flight or concerts tickets. Sometime some colorin pages for my children. No more than that... #sweepstakes
  • Yup I still print documents & photos I like to have a hard copy of it all! #sweepstakes
  • OK...if photo apps has this type of add-ins, it would be killer.
  • Could be useful in an emerngency. I use Surface Pro 3 at the office and am mostly papreless. I also have access to wireless printing just about wherever I need to print, but there have been times when traveling that this may have come in handy. #sweepstakes
  • I just want to win your prize
  • i make books and calendars mostly #sweepstakes
  • I still print photos. With 3 little ones I like to look at how much they have grown! #sweepstakes
  • Don't need it frequently, but useful in a bind(er).  #sweepstakes
  • i still print photos myself its still fun to us easy also #sweepstakes
  • I print photos for my parents, otherwise I use digital frames. #sweepstakes
  • For photos im 100% digital because its easier and more accessible but for documents, sometimes i have to print but when im not forced to i find it easier to have the digital version, Especially when its related to my education. #sweepstakes
  • To be honest the only things I still ever print are coupons (more so my wife) and things like boarding passes and itineraries. The itineraries more just because I like having physical copies of the stuff. Digital is great... right up until it isn't. Sometimes paper is the only way to go. haha. #sweepstakes
  • I am digital all the time!  #sweepstakes
  • I have a small photo printer that prints 4x6 pictures that I still use....but I also use digital #sweepstakes
  • I am digital all the time! Saves paper. #sweepstakes
  • My wife likes print photos. #sweepstakes
  • Great new app for those who wish to send their printing to Staples and pay them to print. I prefer to save the money  and send to my printer wirelessly . I have a great HP photo printer and it makes beautiful prints #sweepstakes
  • I still print them! #sweepstakes
  • 90% digital, for sure. Occasionally print photos for frames or to send to grandparents. #sweepstakes
  • Love it!  #sweepstakes
  • Much to my youngest child's disappointment we are mostly digital which means her photo albums are much smaller than her siblings.  Instead of printing out the pictures to lay around and wait to go in a photo album I prefer making the photo books online and having them shipped to me already completed.  For documents all is saved digitally except what has to be signed and returned.  #sweepstakes
  • I don't print all that often, but my wife has printed a bunch while in her masters program. #sweepstakes
  • I still print when I can #sweepstakes
  • I am all digital  #sweepstakes
  • I still print them #sweepstakes
  • I still print photos and documents. Pretty soon I will be going all digital! #sweepstakes
  • I print coupons, 'must-print' documents, and sweeps instructions for mail-ins I find online.  I don't print pictures.
  • Still print when I can. I like some things done this way.#sweepstakes
  • I still print documents and mailing labels, but my photos are digital these days. #sweepstakes
  • I am a hopeless paper person. Have to hold it, read it, touch it. Posting as an entry into the sweepstakes #sweepstakes
  • This would be good to print out financial and other types.. #sweepstakes
  • I print as little as possible. My wife prints photos, but she is a teacher and uses them in class. #sweepstakes
  • I am 100% digital for my personal life, but as for my professional needs, reports and presentations often have to be printed out. #sweepstakes
  • Almost entirely digital, unless the document is something that absolutely needs to be printed. #sweepstakes
  • I find myself still printing quite a lot. There is something about having it PHYSICALLY in your hands for me! #sweepstakes
  • Mostly digital, except when I need to print things like concert tickets at places that won't scan a phone.  #sweepstakes
  •  I print documents and photos.  Thanks for the chance!! #sweepstakes
  • I'm 99% digital #sweepstakes
  • I still print everything with an old fashioned printer. Thanx for the chance!!  #sweepstakes
  • At home I am about 80% digital and at work it is about the same. We really don't print picture though. #sweepstakes
  • I try to be a digital as possible, but there are still occasions where the need to print is necessary #sweepstakes
  • I'm 100% digital   #sweepstakes
  • Yep, still print pictures.  I print them to put in frames in my office, or on the mantle in the living room.  Also print them to mail to family members for the same reasons I posted this comment as a #sweepstakes entry
  • I am mostly digital but still print documents when a hard copy is required and pictures that I want on permanent display in my home. Staples' printing service seems pretty good, it would be worth a try. Thank you for this opportunity to win. :-) #sweepstakes
  • I still print out a lot of things. Any document that I may need in the future, receipts, etc. I also print out pictures. A lot more now that I have grandkids. I like to have their smiling faces all over my house!  #Sweepstakes
  • I print or get prints a lot. It is nice to have and hold something tangible. #sweepstakes
  • Photos have gone digital, documents are still about 50/50. #sweepstakes
  • I do still print photos, although it's not every photo. I usually use it as part of a greeting card for the Holidays. Otherwise I am pretty much entirely digital. #sweepstakes
  • I am 100% digital all the wa ! It is so much easier on me!!! #sweepstakes
  • I still print documents! #sweepstakes
  • As someone who prints infrequently, and who had their printer die a couple of weeks ago, I've been having a real issue getting printed what I need for my daughter's recent high school graduation. Since I didn't know that Staples had print stations, I've had to drive across town to the nearest FedEx/Kinkos to print, then pay for computer access just to get at the email with the documents that have needed printing, so additional cost still. Staples is closer to me, so I definately will be trying this plugin. I'm also glad to read that you're Outlook account doesn't need to be updated as I'm one of those who hasn't had it updated yet. #sweepstakes
  • This should have been what MS showed off instead of Starbucks for Outlook.
  • Options are always good.  Reduce printing, save a tree.  #sweepstakes
  • I really only print photos when absolutely necessary (which is basically once every ten years when I renew my passport). If I want prints for my house, I order a canvas print online. #sweepstakes
  • I still print my documents. #sweepstakes
  • I use all digital prints all the time!!!  #sweepstakes
  • I print some photos and I print documents I need to reference occasionally. Otherwise I am digital. #sweepstakes
  • Printing almost all documents and only a few photos. #sweepstakes
  • Digital all the time!  this is also a #Sweepstakes entry.
  • I don't own a printer since I very seldon need too print anything. However, for the few time that I need to print a document Staples seems to have the services I need. #sweepstakes
  • I rarely print photos but occasionally print documents.  #sweepstakes
  • Haven't printed photos in over a year, print documents rarely, vast majority digital #sweepstakes
  • I still print photos and documents, #sweepstakes
  • I print documents once in awhile. I never print photos. #sweepstakes
  • Depending on the picture and who I'm printing it for (grandparents), I sometimes print pics. Most documents, unless I have to provide a hard copy, just get screenshot and shown to the person. #sweepstakes.
  • Uh, I have Google Print, which lets me print from *any* application, not just Office, to the printer at my house.  Also, 9 cents a page is highway robbery.  When I upload documents to Office Max, for black and white, I think I pay 2 cents a page.
  • I transitioned to all digital a couple of years ago.  Just so much easier...  #Sweepstakes
  • I do not print photos myself; I use a service like Picaboo to print photo books.  I do print documents frequently.  I print heat sheets for the volunteers at the summer swim meets for my neighborhood.  I use OfficeMax for this, not Staples, because the user interface of Staples' web site for uploading documents was impossible to use.  #sweepstakes
  • I probably print about 10-15 photos per year to either display or send to others.  Otherwise I use digital means. I posted this comment as a sweepstakes entry!  Thanks for the chance!
  • I print documents at home when necessary and my husband prints photo at work on occasion #Sweepstakes
  • I almost am completely digital as I have an epson that rarely prints correctly! #sweepstakes
  • all digi all the time #sweepstakes
  • Photos are digital but documents are printed. Professors still require documents to be printed otherwise it'll be better to just email! Save the world right? #sweepstakes
  • I do digital pictures   #sweepstakes
  • I don't print photos any more but I still print documents. #sweepstakes
  • As a New Yorker, space is at a premium; I'm working on digitizing almost everything I have collected and moving forward don't see myself printing things that often #sweepstakes
  • Pretty much all digital. We still taolk about photo's we should print but almost never get round to it. The thing i end up printing mosts is forms, which after completing and signing usually get scanned back to a file and sent digitally. #sweepstakes
  • I do sometimes print things.
  • 99.9% digital. I try not to print as much as possible.  #sweepstakes
  • Yes I still print! #sweepstakes
  • We print photos all the time for my wife's scrapbooking habit. #sweepstakes
  • I still print photos. Like to put in frames, #sweepstakes
  • Don't print photos but still do printing of documents for home use. #sweepstakes
  • I often print out documents to fill out and sign them, scan them back into digital form, them email them back.  I never print photos.  #sweepstakes
  • I still print photos.  There is nothing like putting  a photo in a picture frame.  I also like to keep a printed copy of my business related letters.  #sweepstakes
  • Honestly, I still print documents either for backup or to use for reference.  It's easier to flip through the pages and jot down notes when it's a hardcopy.. I'm old school I guess.  As for pics, I was going 95% digital but reality set in that these memories can never be replaced so I now print cherished photos as well.  Technology is fantastic but I'll always like the nostagia of holding a photograph.  #sweepstakes
  • I still print a fair amount of documents on my home and office printers, therefore the Staples Print App would be useful for me. However, it's an app that I would use more or less in special or emergency situations. #sweepstakes
  • i still print when i have to #sweepstakes
  • I still print photos and documents. I guess I'm a little behind the times! #sweepstakes
  • I've gone mostly digital, but some photos and documents are still required to be printed, so in those instances, I will print them. #sweepstakes
  • I'm a planner addict and scrapbooker.... I print things for my hobbies, like photos, stickers, shipping labels, adult coloring sheets, pdf's...and tons of other stuff. I guess you could say I live a half digital & half paper life.  #sweeptakes
  • I'm all digital, all the time!  Thanks for asking and for the awesome giveaway!  #sweepstakes
  • I can see this being useful for me when my printer breaks down. It happens -usually when I have something really important to print. #sweepstakes
  • I don't print pictures but I still print documents frequently #sweepstakes
  • Still print, but less than 5 years ago. #sweepstakes
  • All digital, all the time... #sweepstakes
  • I'm 100% digital on photos, 99% digital for documents, paper only for the important ones. #sweepstakes
  • I don't print pictures at home, but still occasionally print documents at home. #sweepstakes
  • We are around 90% all digital. Still use the printer every once in a while. #sweepstakes

  • I print so rarely these days... still this could be handy #sweepstakes
  • I still print my photos and documents most days. #sweepstakes
  • Very rarely do I print photos pr documents...usually I only do this when I need to give someone a physical copy of something. #sweepstakes.
  • I still print hardcopies of important documents, and it looks like I'm going to be doing a significant amount of printing this coming fall when I go back to school for the first time in a decade. #sweepstakes
  • This app actually works really well. Use it all the time. #sweepstakes
  • I am all digital #sweepstakes
  • Photos stay digital, but documents often still get printed #sweepstakes
  • I only use the printer for school documents everything else is digital #sweepstakes
  • I mostly use digital but order books off shutterfly. #sweepstakes
  • good for when i a a lot to print or when my printer is out of order
  • We are mostly digital.  We do tend to print out a few of our favorite pictures from every vacation #sweepstakes
  • I print on a regular basis #sweepstakes
  • I still print photos when asked and when I want to display them. #sweepstakes
  • I print things that have a lot of information I need to refer to. If possible, I try to keep it only digital because I want to save paper, ink, time, etc. I posted this comment as a Sweepstakes entry.
  • I do print out documents for school, but good to know that staples has these features! #sweepstakes
  • I still print documents for work and for personal use. However, I rarely print photos anymore. From time to time I will print a photo but 99% of the time I keep it digital. #Sweepstakes
  • "That was easy!" #Sweepstakes
  • All digital all the time! (Unless I want to frame one as a gift for someone or to hang up myself) #sweepstakes
  • I am all digital all the time. #sweepstakes
  • Most of my photos are stored and referenced digitally.  I do occasionally order prints.  Please enter me in the #Sweepstakes.

  • There are often times when I need to print.  #sweepstakes
  • I'm only using digital these days!!   It's hard to find the time to print pictures when I can just show them on my phone or share them through social media! #sweepstakes
  • For the most part I am all digital but the occasion sometimes does call for prints. Especially older relatives that need some nice pictures of my kids :) or some businesses that only do faxing or mail in rebates. #sweepstakes Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • I print photos that I want to frame and I print only documents that I need to sign or send out. #sweepstakes
  • It's been a long time since I printed pictures. I want to do so for special vacations, but I'm wayyy behind. #sweepstakes
