Bloodborne-like 'The Surge 2' should launch in September on Xbox and PC, preorder here

What you need to know

  • The Surge 2 is a Dark Souls-like game.
  • The Microsoft Store Australia probably leaked the game's release date.
  • The launch date is listed as September 24.
  • You can preorder it for $60 through the Microsoft Store.

The Surge 2 is an upcoming Dark Souls-like game which is more accessible than the popular series. Developer Deck 13 and publisher Focus Home Interactive announced the renewal of their partnership and the development of The Surge 2 over a year ago. The sequel is planned for launch on PC and consoles in 2019. According to the team, The Surge 2 keeps the hardcore limb-targeting combat system, but greatly enhances the environment.

The Surge mostly took place in claustrophobic corridors, and even the theme park and Wild West expansions didn't feel as open as they should have. The Surge 2 transports players to a sprawling, devastated city with larger and more ambitious level design. The developer noted that combat is also more brutal than ever, with even more options in the limb-targeting system. As expected, there will also be more abilities, weapons, implants, and drones. This should give players more freedom when it comes to choosing a playstyle that works for them.

On the way to Jericho City, your plane is shot down by a mysterious storm and crash-lands in the outskirts. Soldiers enforce martial law, robots are on a rampage, and a dark, expanding nanostorm looms over the cityscape. In a bid to survive, explore the sprawling, devastated Jericho City. Fight ferocious threats in brutal, unforgiving combat, slashing and tearing the limbs off your opponents to steal valuable equipment that will make you stronger — strong enough to face the most fearsome, imposing foes lurking in the city. With an expanded arsenal of weapons, armors, abilities, implants, and drones to build your character, and a bigger, more varied and more ambitious world, The Surge 2 challenges you to survive and unravel its hidden secrets.

According to a report by TrueAchievements, a Microsoft Store listing for The Surge 2 may have revealed its release date. The page says that the game will launch on September 24. We were able to verify this by going to the Microsoft Store Australia page. The title is listed for Australian $89.95, which converts to American $60. It's also Xbox One X Enhanced, but it seems like the game doesn't run at 4K resolution. It'll probably prioritize 60 frames per second gameplay.

Since there is just one listing for The Surge 2, there doesn't appear to be a season pass. Just like its predecessor, this game will probably feature separate paid expansions. Hopefully areas other than theme parks and Wild West sets will be featured this time around.
