Xbox Companion App coming to Windows Phone, magically controls Xbox 360

With the news of on-demand TV content for Xbox 360 officially confirmed, Windows Phone owners might be feeling a little neglected. Don’t worry, guys, Microsoft hasn’t forgotten about us. In fact, watching TV on the 360 will be even more convenient for people with Windows Phones. That’s because Microsoft just announced the Xbox Companion App for WP7!

Ben Rudolph at the Windows Blog shares his experiences with the app:

  • "Finding Content: Just like on your Xbox, the Xbox Companion gives you instant access to the Xbox LIVE Marketplace catalog of games, movies, music and TV shows. I used it to search “Featured Content” and pulled up the X-Men: First Class.
  • Learn more about what you’re watching, listening to, or playing: Once I found the movie and touched the movie tile, the Xbox companion app took me to an info page that has all the related details about. And the content is really rich, too – for example, when I swiped to the “cast” page and touched an actor’s name, like star James McAvoy, I was taken to other movies starring him. From there, I could easily learn more about the other movies, their cast, etc. It’s an infinite road of interactive content.
  • Control & Play: Once I selected the content and hit play, the Xbox Companion flips into “controller mode” in which I could navigate my Xbox, or control video playback of your video. The best part here is that controls are virtually instantaneous – easily as fast as using my controller or a TV remote."

Microsoft has been promising stronger Xbox 360 and Windows Phone integration for a long time, and now it’s finally happening. The availability of the app, provided Microsoft advertises it a little bit, should help promote Windows Phones to Xbox 360 users, which can only be good. Speaking of availability, the Xbox Companion App doesn’t have a specific release date yet, but it should materialize sometime shortly after the Fall 2011 Dashboard update, which lands in November. It will of course be free.

Make the jump after the break to see video highlights of what's coming to the Xbox consoles. Around the 1:00 mark you'll see the new Windows Phone app in action.

  • Can't wait! Very excited to get everytihig Microsoft has to offer. This is hands down the best ecosystem.
  • And the most complete as well. OS for desktops to phones, services from games to email. Love seeing everything be tied together like this.
  • The article mentions surfing your xbox, zune/movies via the phone, I hope that includes the cable offering. I have comcast now and I would love to be able to just have my xbox as my cable box, gaming, internet, etc, AND surf all of it using my phone. I would love to have truly one controller, well except to turn on the TV, but to surf cable, watch TV, etc, all with MY PHONE! GET R DONE.
  • Say What???
  • Please add voice control thru phone. Hate the idea of having to address the xbox as xbox. want to be able to just hit a button and say "record show" or "watch **** .
  • Just allow me to hear my messages from XBL on my phone. I hate that "log into XBL to hear this..."
  • agreed by why stop there, how about party chat through WP7. It's just voip after all.
  • The best ecosystem without a doubt. One UI to rule them all. :D
  • Next stop, Halo!!!
  • OK, Microsoft, we want to see you advertise the h*** out of this. I want to see Windows Phone + XBox + Kinnect ads on screens more often than I see iThing and 'Roid ads combined.
  • Exactly. The iphone commercials were driving me crazy. I have nothing against an iphone, but the commercials were on every commercial break on TV! If apple can pull that, MS can and should. Majority of consumers have NO idea what kind of ecosystem this is and will be, and WIN7 phones are a mystery. The push should start now.
  • Do you know what i'd like to see also? Is companies like DICE, Activision, Bethesda and the like release apps (live tiles!) for their games for our WP7 devices. We can then stat track, check on friends, check our cheevos and even have a few mini games that might earn us stuff in game (Fable 3 have something don't they?). Tie it in the Xbox as much as possible. There are people in my office that would gladly give up their iPhones and Android devices for something like this.
  • Lookin good guys. xBox ... check. WP7 ... check, connected .... check. Now will you do a better job of integrating Mesh synced folders with WP7? Thanks.
  • This has me so stoked! I can't wait for the integration. It always bothered me that my Android phone could share and stream files from my computer to my phone to my TV and Xbox, but my Windows phone couldn't. When Microsoft finally gets all their products fully compatible it'll help drive WP7 sales much like iTunes drives iDevice sales too. GO WP7!
  • This is a good thing. I have a kinect and honestly never use voice commands, but I would use my phone for a controller. I use my xbox gaming controller for it and my phone would be sweet. Now, MS, how about some actual gaming between the win7 phone and xbox/kinect?? While your at it, multiplayer/live games via win7 and some games that launch on Live and win7 (poker) play live too. I would think a lot of people would love that as a feature. Some intergration between Gears/Halo on the phone..BTW, why haven't we seen or heard a halo type game on the phone, or something from epic? Get it done MS. In fact, speaking of epic I hope they keep Gears exclusive. It is sad to see so many exclusives leave MS.
  • Been asking for this! So excited! I hope it will work across the whole interface and not just Microsoft's content.
  • How about a Zune remote while you are at it.
  • The "Do my bidding" graphic made me laugh. I love it!
  • Thanks man. :)
  • I have finally decided to make the switch to Windows Phone. This was the straw that broke the camel's back. Now let's hope that Nokia will come out with a phone for Sprint before Christmas...
  • Will this still work on an Xbox that is banned from Xbox Live?
  • Yes!! Very cool,, next I want to use and control Zune pass as custom soundtrack and be able to control it from phone
