Xbox One X will soon output at 1440p resolution when connected to 1440p monitors [Updated]

If a 1080p screen was connected to the console however, the device would supersample the visuals to 1080p resolution. 4K and 1080p displays aren't the only ones on the market though, and a lot of gamers prefer 1440p monitors. We haven't heard much about 1440p displays since the console was announced, so many figured that the Xbox One X would just display a 1080p supersampled image even though a 1440p display was connected. This would result in a less-than-optimal picture. Luckily, that isn't the case.

Today Kevin Gammill, the program manager for Microsoft's Xbox Platform Partner Group, said that the console would output at 1440p if a 1440p monitor was detected. This is great news for those hoping to use a 1440p monitor with their consoles, as they don't have to worry about the picture quality being upscaled from 1080p.

The Xbox One X launches on November 7, 2017 and is the most powerful console ever made. The device features 6 TFLOPS of processing power and 12 GB of GDDR5 RAM. In addition to that, the Xbox One X also contains a 4K Blu-ray player and offers a faster hard drive. For those looking to make the most of their console gaming experience — no matter if it's the desire for higher resolutions or more stable frame rates — if Microsoft nails its goals, it could be the device for you.

The Xbox One X is currently available to preorder for $499 or equivalent depending on your region. The console is launching simultaneously worldwide so chances are you'll be able to find it in your region soon.

Update 11/2/17: Microsoft confirms that support for 1440 resolution output is coming to the Xbox One X, but it is not yet implemented.

  • Is this any different than the current Xbox One? I hook my Xbox One up to my 1440p monitor and it looks decent, but I just assume the output signal from the xbox is 1080 and the monitor is doing the scaling. Will the X work differently? Will the scaling be done by the console instead of the monitor? And will this result in a better picture - specifically on a high end monitor that presumably has a very good scalar.

  • Seriously..... the 'top 100' you are referring too is within the last few hours - look at the top, it states it is updated hourly. This is no surprise as Amazon has just activated the 'real' pre order allocation, hence why there is loads available to pre-order, no stock shortage, no 'sold out'. Just a standard pre-order of the console
  • Do game devs need to update their games for Xbox One X or will there be some benefit automatically? My worry is if devs need to change their games it will mean it takes ages before we start to see res and FPS improvements in these games, and some games never will get better. Adding in 1440p creates an extra layer of effort for devs so seemingly another disincentive to update. Or will Xbox One X naturally output games in higher resolution and FPS simply because it's more powerful and can?
  • In summary yes.  You can expect standard improvemnets in frame rates in most games without developers touching it.  If a game uses dynamic resolution, you can expect target resolution to be maintained.   You can find the whole list of confirmed One X enhanced titles (meaning dev work has been gone into improving the title for the new hardware) here:

  • I doubt it. I would guess the console will just think it's outputting at 4k, so it will be the same as running in 4k.
  • If the game already have a PC version... the fastest way is to use the PC HD assets. Shouldn't be that long imo.
  • What I am curious about is whether it will support ultra-wide 1440p panoramic WQHD (3440 x 1440) as well as QHD (2560 x 1440). Also, will it support higher frame rates and higher (75hz) refresh rates?  Using AMD Freesync which has been established for 4k (HDMI) TVs. Either way, I need a new monitor for my PC, and thought I'd use the same monitor for our new Xbox One X which is on order.
  • Freesync support is awesome. Games that doesn't hit the 60fps all the time should feel much smother
  • Cool! I mean, it's painfully obvious that 1440p got passed aside when it came to home television resolutions, but it's still a serviceable resolution for monitors (or tablets like my Surface Pro 3). Glad to hear the XB1X will have support for it. 
  • I kind of just assumed both this, and the Xbox One, acted like the Xbox 360 in regards to monitors and basically allowed for any resolution it could handle to be the output.

  • Very good move Microsoft. When you can't compete with PS4, the only thing is to extend its usability to increase sales. Able to play 360 games, intend to merge users from Nintendo and Valve, and now this. No being sarcastic but I would say it's a good move.
