Avengers heroes will 'look better closer to launch' says Square Enix

What you need to know

  • Marvel's Avengers is an upcoming action game from Square Enix.
  • It's supposed to launch in May 2020.
  • Square Enix is going to improve the characters as the months go on.
  • You can preorder Marvel's Avengers for $50 through Amazon (opens in new tab).

Marvel's Avengers is an upcoming game from Square Enix, but the reveal didn't go as smoothly as the company anticipated. When Avengers was announced a few months ago, people criticized it for the "distorted" character faces and linearity of the mission. Instead of a sprawling adventure, the game came across as a linear brawler.

Developer Crystal Dynamics and publisher Square Enix have vowed to improve the game before its May 15, 2020 launch. Avengers Editorial Director Casey Lynch said the following in an interview with PCGamesN.

Everything about the game is going to continue to change as we polish, as we approach launch right now, but things that we've shown both at E3 and here, it's all been pre-alpha. There'll be changes to everything from the characters to a lot of what you see.

A Square Enix spokesperson added the following.

By changes, we're talking about polish. What we're doing is we are continuing to add detail to their character models, we're improving the lighting, we're improving the skin shading. So, what you're hopefully seeing is the characters continuing to look better as we get closer to launch. But in terms of changing character designs, that's not currently what we're looking at.

Hopefully, these changes will be significant enough so that gamers think the heroes look natural. However, only time will tell. PCGamesN added how Black Widow already looks better in the new gameplay footage.

The Avengers game takes place after a horrific event leaves San Francisco in ruins. The team has been disbanded for five years, but when an even bigger evil threatens the planet, it's up to you to assemble the crew and save the world once.

  • I don't think Square Enix will satisfy those who criticize the look of the characters. I don't think it was about them looking unnatural. I think people wanted the characters to look like their movie counterparts. It's very understandable that they don't. To me, the game looks great. Yet is does look like its linear. We just going to have to wait and see.
  • Linear games are the best
  • I dont get it. Admittedly Thors hair doesn't look right, but tas the Gamescom demo went on I thought the visuals were fantastic. The Taskmaster fight looked visually stunning. As did most of it. The gameplay I'd exactly what I love. Linear story driven gameplay. Like old Uncharted 1-3. Huge set pieces, and the combat is a cross between old school God Of War and devil May Cry. I loved it.
