Here's what's fixed and broken in Windows 10 Mobile preview build 14283

Microsoft has a long list of what bug have been fixed, and what is broken, with the new Windows 10 Mobile preview build 14283 that was released to Insiders on the Fast ring.

Here's what's fixed in this build, according to Windows Insider head Gabriel Aul:

  • We have addressed an issue where the background behind the All apps list would not have an overlay (causing it to appear too bright or too dark, depending on your background) if you went back to All apps list after launching an app.
  • We fixed an issue causing the title of a song in volume control to flicker a few times when you pressed play or changed tracks after a pause.
  • We fixed an issue some users were experiencing with Build 14267 where your device could hang while typing and reboot.
  • We made some more improvements to the Live tile refresh logic. First, if there are pending notifications for several Live tiles, we will now update them in one quick sweep across the Start screen rather than one at a time. Second, if a Live tile has both badge and content updates, they will now appear at the same time. Finally, apps will now launch faster from the Start screen if there are incoming Live tile updates at the same time.
  • We fixed an issue where Live tiles for certain apps (such as the Weather app) would sometimes unexpectedly be cleared of active notifications.
  • We fixed an issue in which the Start screen background would appear to stutter behind the tiles when scrolling up and down the Start screen on some devices such as the Lumia 950.
  • We fixed an issue where the keyboard would sometimes pop up when swiping over to the All apps list.
  • We fixed an issue where icons for certain apps would appear too tiny on Live folders on the Start screen if your phone was set to 350% DPI.
  • We fixed an issue where "More notifications" message in Action Center was not properly formatted.
  • We fixed an issue where for certain languages, pressing "@" button could result the contents of the clipboard being pasted.
  • We fixed an issue where notifications using custom sounds would be silent if the underlying audio file had been deleted. Now, if that file is not present, it will play the default notification sound.
  • Connected to wireless displays should now work by going to Action Center and expanding Quick actions and choosing "Connect".

There are also a few known issues in this build:

  • We have updated the Bluetooth AVRCP profile on mobile to version 1.5. Some cars only tell Windows what they support and vice versa during the initial pairing ceremony. In order for this update to take full effect, you need to delete your existing Bluetooth pairing with your car and then re-pair. After doing so, if you notice any issues using media playback controls or missing artist or track info, please file a new feedback item including your car's make, model, and year.
  • If you have a Microsoft Band 1 or 2 paired to your phone, it will no longer sync after updating to this build due to a system API failure that occurs after the update. If you want to get your Band syncing with your phone again – you can temporarily change the language of your phone as a short term workaround until we release a fix. Additionally, you can also choose to reset your phone to get out of this state – however you may experience this update issue again with the next build until we fix this issue. This issue may also impact Skype video and audio calls.
  • We are investigating an issue where the Gadgets app is not able to detect the Microsoft Display Dock on phones running Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview builds, and thus cannot update the firmware version. If you have a dock which has already been updated to version 4 then this will not affect you. If you have a dock that has not been updated, then you may experience some minor issues with USB-C stability.
  • Connectivity to older Wi-Fi networks using the WEP encryption security method may be broken. WEP is an insecure method for protecting your Wi-Fi connection but a small percentage of Windows users still use it. A workaround would be to configure your wireless routers to use WPA or WPA2 or wait for the next Insider flight when this is fixed.

As always with new preview builds, there are also likely bugs that have not yet been discovered by Microsoft

  • If anyone has updated their AT&T Lumia 950 to this build, let me know how stable it is compared to 10586.164 please
  • Man I just rolled back 2 days ago. I think I'll stay on the 10586.167.
  • Outlook and calendar are completely broken now on my 1020. They won't even open.
  • Same here and I haven't even updated yet. I'm getting a bit tired of this. I just want a phone that works.
  • I had the same problem, look up the app in the store and it will show update. I did and everything works now.
  • Same here, did the update and all is good again.
  • Thanks. It worked.
  • Agreed, not working after build update, but have updated Apps and Outlook working again at least
  • Where are you seeing this update? I just show installed. No update option.
  • Ah, thanks man, did the trick, much appreciated.
  • Opt out of Windows Insider then.
  • Thanks for nothing.
  • That is kind of the answer tho. Posted via Samsung Galaxy S6 but still love for Windows.
  • Then preview software, especially Redstone, likely isn't for you 950 XL Canada
  • I have a 950 XL. It sucked without the preview version. I think I have reason to be annoyed.
  • I agree. "RTM build" for 950/XL was garbage. Preview is generally way better, but there are risks. Basically, Windows 10 Mobile is a risk. We complain about WP apps and features going to iOS and Android, and people say "MS is a software company." We complain about endless software bugs its own platform, and people either say "Android has issues too," "Go back to WP 8.1," "Get lost, I don't see any issues," or "Stop complaining."
  • Stick with 8.1, the APPROVED O.S. for your phone. I works fine.
  • I have a 950 XL. Your point isn't valid.
  • Life is good on the Release Preview ring at the moment. Consider moving back - For me at least, it's running brilliantly on my L950. Sent from Microsoft Band
  • Well YOU'RE an idiot who cant read aren't u?
  • Can we have 8.1 for our Lumia 950 and 950 XL please? Win10 RTM, Beta, Redstone, are all awful!!!
  • "I just want a phone that works" You realise that you're on a beta OS program yeah?
  • Stay on 8.1 and you will have the phone that works
  • I am not sure if this build applies to you
  • Try resetting the apps. I actually think MS have hired some competent programmers or the bosses woke up. This build seems snappier and so far better than .0004 build. I haven't noticed any problems so far but the last couple of apps were soo buggy for me and the phone kept random rebooting.
  • Same here. Lumia 950
  • Mine works.. Had some other issues..
    ..........
After about 50 updates to our phones in the past year at some point you're going to just have to start fresh.. No backups. It sucks, but we just can't expect all these updates to configure, and restore, every device flawlessly forever... At some point our older devices just have to be unsupported, and replaced. That's just reality. ROJO > ARLINGTON, TX > LUMIA 1520 ≥ 950... WAITING FOR 6.2" SURFACE PHONE
  • People on 8.1 phones ******* about problems when the redstone builds arent meant for them and aren't even available without tweaks... SMH...
  • Nist...ur 1020 running 14283?..how did you get it?
  • I'm running .164 through the Windows Insider app. I've never had a stable WinMo10 build. Never. Something is always amazingly broken. I may need to take the time to roll back to 8.1. I think I'm done with Winmo10
  • I thought it was a foregone cnclusion that Win 10 was just plain slow/broken on the 1020. Sorry to hear you're having so many problems.
  • Yea, I tried the Redstone branch for a couple of days and bailed on it for my 950. Felt unnecessary to tolerate the issues with it when the 10586 branch has gotten so clean and stable on the 950's. I got the 950 the day before Thanksgiving. The progress has been remarkable. It's far from the same experience today, as it was back then.
  • Just rolled back to 10586.164 yesterday. I'm just sharing previous RS build 14267.104 problems on my 950XL DS: 1. Gadgets app broken - can't connect to all accesories and also DT-903 wireless charger for customization 2. Artist, track info not shown when streaming bluetooth audio to car audio despite deleting the paring and repair on both phone and car audio. 3. Keyboard would not pop-up in Edge when filling form after switching from other app like authenticator app. 4. Screen flickering (black) when launching camera. In fact in all full screen video. Appreciate it if those who updated to this build could share if the above problems still persist.  And to those complaining and whinning, please understand that there are risks of going on fast ring. Remember, you clicked the "Accept" button in the Windows Insider app. If you want a stable build go either slow ring, preview release, or production. 10586.164 is very stable now. I tried RS and it's not for me and took the pain to use WDRT to roll back all the way to 10586.29 and then updated back to .164. And it's good to see that MS is continously working on both Threshold (release) and Redstone.  Keeping Redstone to only a selected phone is a good idea as it's bleeding edge and releasing that option to the mass might generate more whining and complaints from those who do not understand the concept of "Technical Preview"
  • Continuum is not good too...not fluid at all
  • Don't do it!!!! Backward progress for sure Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
    On my Lumia 950
  • So many fixes. I want this on my phone now, but unfortunately I have Lumia 1020 :( Great to see so many fixes
  • Unfortunately? :p Sent from Hobbiton. It's quite nice out here.
  • It works fine on my 1020
  • This won't work on a 1020.
  • it will if you want to do some tweaking :P
  • please elaborate
  • by Changing the device and manufacturer name in the registry, but on your own risk as this can damaged the device
  • Anyone else's 1020 freeze when taking a photo?
  • Nope. Works fine on my 1020
  • Some major bugs squashed! Finally! ☺
  • Not major but effing annoying and easily fixable.
  • True. I also noticed two new things: This build installed very quickly over the previous Redstone build. The post-installation had only 7 steps this time, out of the 23 I've encountered before.
  • Music flicker was the worst! Let's see if we can finally project to Xbox One again or if it's still broken. -_-
  • YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS i really got happier when i read that line :D EDIT: OMG IT'S NOT FOR 920 CRYING!!!!!!
  • DOWNLOADING NAAAAO
  • On what phone Sent from windows 10 mobile
  • Nokia 3310 :p Sent from Hobbiton. It's quite nice out here.

  • Seems interesting Posted from my Lumia 1520 high on Windows 10 Mobile
  • Finally!!!
  • Oh look the bugs everyone was whining about are getting fixed, even the music bug. I can see it getting better and updates being faster now that they built the foundation correctly. +640/Win10
  • Imagine that, complaining about bugs results in bugfixes. Wow. Sounds to me like it would behoove us to keep "whining" then.
  • I'm was mostly directing my comment to the haters claiming Microsoft couldn't or wouldn't ever do anything right. Shoulda clarified I guess... +640/Win10
  • For me personally it's more appealing the development state than the already developed one.
  • You mean you prefer the Redstone builds over the rtm build? Is it doing that well? +640/Win10
  • I doubt Microsoft is looking at these boards to determine what needs to be fixed.  They have the Feedback app for that.
  • Did they fix the Contiuum problem with the phone being used as a mouse cursor jumps all over the place?
  • Are you talking about the scrolling or the mouse?
  • when youare using you finger on the phone screen to control the mouse on the TV screen and it jumps all over the place.
  • Is this with Miracast? Never had the issue using dock.
  • Had the same issue as Sunstorming. Already filed a feedback.
  • Yup, it is working as expected on a Lumia 950 XL now using the dock.
  • I am talking when using Miracast. I don't have a dock.
  • Yeah, continuum does not work well with miracast. It is too sensitive to use as a mouse. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Good to hear they finally fixed the app background and music flicker thing :) Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • Is FIFA 15 working on mobile ???
  • IS THIS REAL?? Sent from Hobbiton. It's quite nice out here.
  • hahaha fixes of really old bugs are features of the new redstone builds xDDDD Jezus maria, it's ridiculous. I'm cuorius if the "big update" for odler phones will have that fixes, or better redstone builds as default, not a second or any other update
  • Can you rewrite your comment again in English?
  • I'm courious if the official update for older lumia will be a redstone with this fixes, or TH2 without them. Good enough?
  • 2 steps forward 3 steps back.
  • Relax man Windows 10 Phone . Lumia 1320 .
  • Chachacha
  • Jajajaja Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Those are some fantastic fixes! The Windows Central Universal Application for Windows 10 Mobile on a Nokia Lumia 830
  • The pros are better than the cons, nice update but older phone on inside can't get it, pain Sent from windows 10 mobile
  • There are some really good fixes in that list! However, I'm wondering which language I'll be using for my Microsoft Band 2 sync workaround... Seems like Gabe could have been a tad more specific.
  • Agreed especially as I now do not have a Band paired, would help to have a bit more skin on that work around.
  • I switched my phone to English (Canada) from English (US) and the band can sync again.  Seems like a strange workaround to the problem, but it worked.
  • Curious if you tried switching back to English (US). Did the issue return?
  • Yes, when I moved English(US) back to the top language selection the error returned. English (United Kingdom) works for me. I'm not sure what the down side is if I leave the phone in English (UK), Cortana is still working, mail looks good so I'll just leave it there until I see the need to change it back, which is very easy to do. Voice commands through the Band 2 are still broken though
  • Yea I don't understand how to fix it, I tried changing language, region language ... it doesn't work.
  • I was going for Canada English, but it never seemed to install, so I reset my phone. Works.
  • Finally a fix for the music title flicker bug!
  • Actually, I just updated (L950) and the bug is still there. First thing I checked. Maybe it's a bit better (not every song you skip flickers) but definitely still present
  • omygoodness why?? wht does this bug exist in the first place lol. ugh.
  • I was excited, until I saw the Microsoft Band sync issue. I'll need to skip this build.
  • Yeah when I saw the Microsoft band thing I went to production lol immediately
  • I changed my language from English (US) to English (Canada), had to reboot the phone to take effect, opened the MS Health app, and it right away said the Band2 needed a software update. Works like a charm. The only issue I see with the language change is the notification center now shows: "You have notifications, eh?" ;-)
  • That music flickering bug is sooo annoying on my 640
  • it's embarrasing...
  • What about x40 and x35 and x30 and x25 and also x20 series? -.-" ******* Microsoon finally forget these phones...great..******* awesome how microsoft traiting their users...thats the most user friendly **** ever...-.-" :@
  • Chill, you need a nap, they already explained why older devices aren't getting new builds, plus...they are supporting most windows 8 phones and moving them to windows 10. So what your prob +640/Win10
  • Moving them to W10...when? they have already promised it 3times but there's nothing has changed...Older phones now sucks only...3month ago I bought a Lumia640LTE to enjoy finaly the Win10 and now I'm only just a very disapointed :( I rolled back to WP8.1 Update 2 and I'm just waiting while hoping for a big change...but i can't see improvement just only their new x50 series phones...which also a kind of ****...
  • Well I'm using my 640...all is good here on windows 10 especially build .164... Not perfect mind you...but good enough. As for when it will be released to everyone who knows... It will come when it comes... In reality it's already here through insider program and I've been using it for a year. +640/Win10
  • I understand...but otherwise it's already a big shame that my phone always had a random reboot for example 40times in 1 hour (true story) but on wp8.1 it's just 1-2times on 2-3days...but it's anoying me so much...and ms couldn't fixed it yet....
  • 40 times in one hour...is not random reboot it has to be stuck in a cycle or something...did you ever do a hard reset after upgrading?...and have you tried the newest update(.164)? I haven't had a single random reboot, only an occasional lock up that didnt need a reboot as it pulled itself out. And battery is good. +640/Win10
  • i tried everything but not worked..im thinking about changing the motherboard via varanty..or idk :S
  • Could be hardware issue then... Can't help you there your experience is very abnormal though. +640/Win10
  • Do you have a case? If so, it may be holding down a button. Try removing it to see if the issue is resolved.
  • Well, that was 3 months ago.
  • LOL so you can download windows 10 right now for free on your phone but you prefer whining here like a two years old?
  • Microsoft should be more concerned with launching Windows 10 official form for allusers rather than be launching the beta of beta ...
  • You don't think they are concerned about both? Why else did they release a cumulative update for us, and also a Redstone build? +640/Win10
  • shut up
  • Best of luck to those on the fast ring, but I'll be keeping my 950 on the Threshold branch for a few months yet.
  • I wonder if in Redstone's release they will fix the problem of Groove / OneDrive making you sync your collection **CONSTANTLY** to make sure you didn't steal anything.  It's incredibly annoying.  It has been trying to sync songs that I MYSELF RECORDED .. some as long as 20 years ago ... cause I didn't have a connection to the 'net.
  • share your work :)
  • so still no Notification LED for the devices that support it come on windows!!? :/
  • You have survived so far without it, you will make it for a few more months probably.
  • Anybody facing scroll issue in edge browser.. Windows 10 Lumia 730 slow ring... When i scroll down or up page flickers and I have to rotate the device to bring it back..
  • wrong phone.  this is for 950/650/550
  • I'm having issues with scrolling on my Lumia 640 with 10586.164 in almost every Windows 10 app, including Edge, too. It's really jittery.
  • Im having that issue, lumia 735. Sometimes when u hide nav bar it come back to normal. Seems fixed in .122 cant tell for sure.
  • Hope my band works OK with this build, I may have to do the workaround if it doesn't. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Did you understand the workaround? I didn't :( updating now but I'd like to keep the band functional
  • My sync with my band 2 got busted... Read it too late, reset the band and no I have no usable band at all... Hope they fix it soon!!!
  • Did you understand the workaround? I changed phone language and it didn't solve the problem
  • Another user on Twitter told me that he just added the English (US) language, which rebooted the phone. It set the US language as active for "Phone Language", "Regional format" and "Speech" I think he said. After it rebooted the sync started working for him. Not sure what language he is on. I get my Band back tomorrow from repair, so might hold off on the build a bit longer until there's some brand new features on the RS branch Sent from Microsoft Band
  • Okay, I'm getting that
  • What about those of us with all the Lumia apps and Settings that have updates and keep erroring out? This one is ridiculous.
  • Not updating to this one, i really need Bluetooth working completely
  • I have  some issues with here drive not working , linkedin app crashes, also shazam crashes. Hope this built solve those problems.
  • Not available for Lumia 930 in the UK
  • Insider Redstone Mobile is only for the X50 phones so far.
  • Finally fixed the music issue but man if my band won't sync that sucks.
  • The music flickering issue? That has to be one of the most hated bugs amongst Windows Central readers :) Finally it's been squashed. Sent from Microsoft Band
  • This sucks for MS Band users.
  • Bluetooth AVRCP profile version 1.5 - Does this mean Ford Sync users won't have to "Call Cortana" before doing anything?
  • I love how many changes keep coming to WP! It will be a whole new experience for me when I come back to WP in a year or two. In spite of the issues the platform faces today, I still have high hopes for it.
  • It is fresh! I been here from 7.8 to W10M. It was always exciting. Especially that 8.1 update! ^^
  • Nothing New!!!
  • Man I hope these fixes, especially the first two, will be integrated into the "official" branch. Everything else would be beyond stupid!
  • I'm hoping too to get these fixes on public build too, especially those two obvious issues (All Apps and Music Toast animation), and several other improvements of course. We need bit more polished W10M public builds while waiting for Redstone. I honestly want Redstone to really take time to gain features and polish everything. We don't want another TH release with another bugfest and unpolished. Sent from Windows 95
  • Would be great if those features do make it back into the 10586 builds. What are the key new features we should expect with RS1? Have they outlined the roadmap for it. I'm struggling to think of anything BIG. One thing I haven't seen officially mentioned, but it's obvious they are working towards is send SMS from the PC. That's the only biggie I can think of in terms of brand new features that should hopefully arrive in RS1, with the rest being polish. Something I'm glad to see, but it's always exciting to get new features too! Sent from Microsoft Band
  • Oh and the authenticator app, early signs seem to indicate it will require Redstone to download at the moment, so I guess that will fall under a Redstone feature if it doesn't become available for the TH branch at some point. Sent from Microsoft Band
  • Well as far as I know, nobody knows about the roadmap (except for those people who have somehow gotten leaks or connections from Microsoft we just don't know). All the things we known so far that have some assurance, the RS1 features most likely composed of SOME delayed features from TH2 (or TH1) such as Edge Extensions which is pretty popular thing being talked about, but this wasn't even big, it's a browser feature after all. Other things are rumored to have more Continuity-like features for communication apps such as SMS and Phone call on a PC. App-wide Continuity-like feature where it roams its activities or session between devices, example: Music played on the PC can be resumed on a Phone vice-versa. Another example would be continue editing a Word document from PC to Phone. These features similar to Continuity from OS X and iOS. Interactive Live Tiles seems rumored to come on Redstone but not so sure if RS1 or RS2. Microsoft never talked about that in the public which is really disappointing, especially that Live Tiles hasn't evolved much since its first introduction in Windows Phone 7!! Though there is still a good sign though, last Build event during the Live Tile conference, they talked about Interactive Live Tiles briefly but without a demo, technical or developer-related details. Interactive Live Tiles is still in the shadows somewhere. OneDrive Placeholders is speculated to come on Redstone too, but as usual we're not sure if its really the Placeholders coming back or just another solution that is similar but not exactly alike. There are some very few things also that I forgot but I find them nothing really major at the moment. It feels like RS1 based on what we know is nothing much better than TH2. They really need to make RS1 significant in terms of completely new features and the return of several features from Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.X. Heck even current features such as Task View is still half-baked that you can't arrange desktops and even rename them, things that is been a while from other OS especially some Linux distros and OS X. I wouldn't even consider Authenticator app being as a 'feature' of Redstone unless there is really some tight integration to the OS making it different from any other authenticator app. Since it's an app, it doesn't have to be for Redstone only. It seems they're just making artificial restrictions for now.
  • 730 getting this update ? Anyone?
  • One day, but not today. Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • And hop that day will come soon :-p
  • I still wonder when they will fix Gadgets... I don't use it much but it is nice to have.
  • Record video to SD card in the Lumia 640 XL continues with bug. When you open the video shows unsupported format MP4 ... someone has found a solution while Microsoft does not correct?
  • Both my Outlook mail and calendar apps don't open now (unl 950xl)
  • Update them in store
  • Go to the store and update. Seen somewhere that actually worked. Using Windows Central Beta for Windows 10 on Lumia 520
  • That fixed it for me. Thanks.
  • Very welcomed fixes
  • Is it just me or does somebody else also feel that most of these fixes should be added to 10586 before it is released to the public. Especially 1 and 2.
  • You're not alone. We need all these fixes and improvements on public builds too. Just leave the completely new features to Redstone for now. I hope Redstone would have split screen multitasking/Windows Snap similar to Windows 10. Sent from Windows 95
  • That Band/Band 2 bug is egregious. I understand that it's probably due to the bluetooth profile update and hopefully there's a Band update to fix it but man that one really sucks.   And hopefully they also fixed the bug where I'm not getting emails in my notification bar.
  • Yea, dont want to lose my MSB2 data if can't sync. I also have to use skype call for work, not sure want to chance that being broken....
  • Well the good thing the Band 2 has like 64 mb of space so as long as it's not out of sync for too long you won't lose any data. I went over a week without syncing (due to being on a cruise with no data availbility) and when I was able to sync again, I didn't miss a beat, including a gps tracked run.
  • I posted below as well, but cant we install desktop sync app and just use that?
  • I've actually never tried the desktop sync app. I'll have to check it out when I get home.
  • Updated my L640 with no problems. NOT!
  • Was this that Borat joke? :D or you didn't really have problems?
  • Finally they fixed that all app bug! Yes!!! :) it bothered me little bit.
