Star Control: Origins is an upcoming title in development by Stardock. The Scryve — an alien race — wishes to destroy humanity and it's down to you and your not-so-great spaceship to navigate the universe and form some alliances. You'll be meeting the Tywom, Mu'kay, and Menkmack, among others and the latest preview trailer shows off some gameplay and new characters.
In the footage, we can see some game mechanics that include exploring planets on the surface, communicating with alien species, speeding around and attempting to build up some form of resistance against the impending doom. There's a lot of humor to Star Control: Origins, with the leader of the Tywom commenting on how many nukes humanity has, and if anyone on the vessel wants a massage.
The game was updated at the start of May with some new features and content in the accessible public beta (for those who have pre-ordered), and the game is expected to be released later in 2018.
