Leak reveals new location-sharing app from Microsoft called 'People Sense'

It appears that Microsoft is working on a new app that will allow users to chat and share their location with friends and family. Called People Sense, the app was detailed by Spanish site Microsoft Place, which managed to get a short hands-on with it, seen in the video above.

Microsoft Place notes that People Sense, currently codenamed Buddy Aware, will allow you to specify a group of people with which to share your location, and will even offer integration with third-party applications for communication and navigation purposes.

People Sense

The leaked build is dated February 17, which points to something that is under active development. Given the timing of this leak, along with the included features of the app itself, it will be interesting to see if this turns into a replacement for Rooms, which Microsoft recently announced it was dropping support for. In any event, you can find more from Microsoft Place at the source link below.

Thanks for the tips, Gabriel and Sarang!

  • Thumbs up!
  • Looks like it will replace the chat feature of rooms, but what about the rest? Guess we'll have to wait and see how it works.
  • Windows 10 mobile preview allows grouping of people where you can see all their posts in one place. And you can email/text them all at once.
  • Is there a universal hub in windows 10 for smartphones?
  • It's a start. If you swipe left in the people hub, you can make a new group with specific contacts in it.
  • so basically the same as the contract groups you had with windows phone 7 already. so nothing like rooms than
  • Ok
  • That's a totally different thing, and it has been available since WP7.
  • The fact that it's still there might indicate they will expand it to create more Rooms-like functionality.
  • how is grouping people any indication for this? grouping people is the main thing of every contacts application :O
  • Windows 8.x did the same. That isn't the room functionality, that's groups.
  • Every single feature from Rooms today can be reproduced directly through their apps-- shared calendars, shared OneNote, shared pics via OneDrive. Chat has been nothing but SMS/MMS since they shutdown MSN Messenger service... presumably would be changed to Skype IM, I suppose.
  • That's not true. Rooms on Windows Phone 8.0 allowed for users to see who uploaded photos or videos, and then comment on them individually in a separate area, like Facebook. OneDrive can't do that. And arguing that shutting down Rooms is okay because one can share and then check the Calendar app, the OneNote app, the OneDrive app, the People app, and a group chat app separately is a pretty stupid argument. Rooms unified all of that into one UI, one LiveTile. Much better.
  • Agree also, I do
  • How do you reproduce the feature of having everything in one place - chat, photos, calendar and notes?
  • They could merge the features of Rooms into Skype, implement a group feature in Skype & make all the features that were in Rooms available to all versions of Skype not Just Windows 10 for phones but Windows 10, Android, iOS & any other Skype version. That would give BBM a run for its money.
  • Well, they should. Skype has really gotten quite good at text messages for me recently and there are few great features they could implement to get people using it for other than video call purpose.
  • Put Rooms' features into Skype, and put Skype into the messaging app, with all those features. This is what they should do, or just put the features into the messaging app and allow third-party apps to do some kind of integration.
  • Finally do something meaningful with Skype on Windows Phone? Microsoft? Crazy talk surely.
  • Easy groupme
  • ^ This. GroupMe is from Skype, owned by Microsoft.  If only they could match the speed and stability of the iOS/Android app on WP... Back button behavior is not always predictable, frequent sync issues while sending messages, etc.
  • Does it have notes and calendar? Those are the two main things we use.
  • Has calendar. Notes no. But you can chat, share photos, a D change "topics". Its a very useful app
  • U idiot .. Chat in room didn't require sms ... It was via the messenger ...
  • My thoughts as well; seems a really poor deal for the user, losing Rooms for this...
  • Well, MS said from the beginning that they didn't want to please users with Windows 10. They simply want to make the best damn OS the world has ever seen.
  • i.e Windows Phone 7.. RIP Metro, long live Windows Frankenstein Edition
  • They actually said that? About time to disembark, I think. If you aren't pleasing your users -- who is defining 'best OS'? -- that's an organization that has completely lost sight of what is important.
  • Ah, sorry. Maybe I saw one of the writers at Windows Central say this. Actually, I can't remember anymore, maybe I dreamt it. :P
  • Pretty contradictory; best OS is the one that pleases most users. Removing rooms (or at least the functionality of rooms) will not please anyone, thus diminishing the quality of their OS...
  • Don't believe everything you read. The MS presentation made a big deal about wanting to make Win 10 something that users "love".
  • Well, not many people used Rooms. Only the few who did voiced their disappointment, that's why it seems like a lot of people used it. Personally, I don't mind them removing it.
  • Source?
  • What they need is build this into Skype app that integrates into messaging. Add ability to interop with Photos, OneNote, Office, OneDrive, Calendar, People apps for doc and photo sharing. Add exclusive STICKERS feature to Skype in WP - the best integrated IM and call app on any platform. And since everything is interop app, they can still update it via store. Skype for sms, vid, photo, doc, notes, ppt, location sharing! Plus auto upload of saved stuff to OneDrive. Can it get any better?
  • No hamburger?
  • Had breakfast?
  • Yay! No burgers! :)
  • Hopefully it will stay like that.
  • Then what will I eat?
  • Three small grains ...
  • Three small seeds of rice...
  • I just want a beef, no burgers ;)
  • And bacon.
  • GOOD.
  • Probably an old design that will get a redesign in a year for w10.
  • Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions – on a sesame seed bun
  • Now I feel hungry.
  • We know where you are (evil grin)
  • Oh no you don't..*pulls tin foil hat down ever tighter*
  • Puts hands over my eyes. "-No you don't".
  • Covers ears too "I can't hear you none, either"
  • *Wraps more foil around fedora* :)
  • Steps into Tesla cage...
  • A lot of black space in this app. I'm guessing/hoping that they'll eventually make things a bit more evenly filled.
  • The impact of Taylor Swift.
  • But they've got a blank space
  • Microsoft wants to be friends. They've got a blank space for ya, baby, and they'll write your name.
  • LOL
  • Developing the app is gonna be forever? Or it's gonna be down in flames?
  • Coz, Daniel I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream.
  • You guys are awesome
  • Microsoft only develop apps if it's torture
  • Omg so good
  • Omg.....i was listening to that song while reading the comment O_O
  • OMG. You listen to Taylor Swift.
  • Of course he does, duh
  • Beta version that will last forever then they will pull it over later.
  • +830
  • True, just like our fantastical lock screen app...
  • Hamburgers are not good makes u fat
  • Redundant.... This is already built into the WP messaging hub....
  • Yes but if its a separate app they can add updates more frequently
  • Yeah.. Like xbm..
  • Yeah. Updated like xbm /s
  • Yeah, updated like XBM that has been updated about a dozen times since 8.1?
  • And half of the times the updates had been bug fixes for issues with a previous update.
  • Trying not to laugh at this one Biyana xD
  • XBM improved with every update on my phone. There was always a noticeable increase in performance.
  • I agree. Also it has more features than the Music player of wp8, but the responsiveness, speed and few other performance characteristics have declined. WP was meant to be smooth and a minimal-bugs OS even if had lesser features to offer, that's where it stands out against android.
  • Well, I guess it's a replacement for rooms.... So.
  • It might be a big upgrade from Rooms. The leak might be a small part of the real thing...
  • It should be.  Its like Google Latitude DNE *smh*
  • rodneyej I'm thinking it will allow real time sharing or maybe every 10 minutes or so. Messaging is just a one time share.
  • That would be cool.
  • No, this doesn't seems to be redundant. The features in WP messaging hub has different purpose and works differently. This seems to be more like a system to share position in (near) real-time, without the needing of explicitly send a message, good for some scenarios like control the position of childrens, or to locate your friends when you are in mountain with snowboard or are you doing a race bike,  but if I want that a my customer reaches me at the bar across town, ii is better to send an SMS...
  • Good to know pivots are still alive and kicking.
People let them know on each video they post.
  • What do you guys refer to when you say pivots, is it the panorama-like menu or the ellipses (3 dots)?
  • 3 dots ;)
  • No...in the first picture, the pivots would be the headers at the top: map people people2. Swipe and change between them.
The "application bar" is the app menu on the bottom with the ellipse.
The panorama style app has the continuous background (think old Photos hub) -- the "pivots" glide over the background.
  • wen in ind...cancel
  • Only thing missing is a spot for a sharable Calendar
  • Cool cool.
  • Oh, building up the app family, I like it! It makes... Sense. (Couldn't resist) On a serious note: "Sense" seems to be much akin to Apple's "i" branding for all its services. Not a bad thing at all on Microsoft's part, it helps users understand that there's a family of built-in apps to make their loves easier. I wonder what else they have in store? Maybe "Money Sense" to reignite the Wallet? Travel Sense could be great. Actually, come to think of it: Take the MSN Apps, add a ton of new features, build it into the OS (combine with other apps as necessary), rebrand them all to be "Sense," there you go. Anyone with me?
  • Makes sense :P.
  • Makes sense to me.
  • Data sense , Storage sense , people sense .... Change battery saver to battery sense . And as well as money sense ..... So Windowsphone will have 5 sense apps like Human beings have 5 sense organs
  • Clock =time sense
    Calender = date sense
    Store = app sense
  • Overall non sense
  • Hahaha
  • Nice one
  • That was great
  • Makes sense
  • Until you get sued by HTC...
  • World Wide Web = Spider sense :P
  • Dang...you beat me to it.
  • Internet Explorer navigates the web...it could be renamed..."Spidey-sense." Thanks, I'll be here all week. Lol
  • Well they've just become our Sensei...
  • What kind of Human has "Money sense"?  ;);)
  • What about HTC Sense??
  • It's a lumia exclusive
  • Phone app = Dialer Sense :P
  • Most of the time what they do Makes No Sense.
  • Makes sense
  • Interesting, hopefully this is better than rooms if it does turn out to be the replacement.
  • Of course it will be better. Windows 10 is going to be awesome!
  • Shouldn't these new apps have hamburgers? I don't get why they would make new apps with old designs.
  • Go to hell hamburger menus
  • These are apps that are long in development independent from w10 design guidelines. By the time it is officially bundled with w10 it will probably get a redesign.
  • Where's the hamburger menu?!
  • Shh....
  • Seems like a better (and safer) implementation of the old Google Latitude.
  • "I sense ______ people..."
  • The sixth sense :D
  • This will be useless unless it works with iOS and Android users
  • This should not .... Bcoz Andriod and iOS users doesn't have SENSE
  • It should work with other OS
  • No, it will come out first and work better on iOS and android
  • Yea, this has been the precedent
  • Pretty much
  • The article states that it will work with 3rd party apps..
  • 'with' 3rd party apps i.e. they'll release an API for other WP app devs, it doesn't mean it'll be released as a 3rd party app for other OS.
  • Right... They kind of show that in the video. I envision "working with 3rd party apps" being something like saying:  "Cortana, where's Friend X?"
"Friend X is on 34th street in Manhattan."
"Can you give me directions to his location?" Then your nav app of choice (Waze, Here, etc.) launches with the route programmed in because it has hooks into the service.
  • I think they will add features like calendar support and possibly file sharing. Looks like the Social Extensibility Framework is being put to good use at last. They better not disappoint. However, it largely depends on the quality of the original apps that this taps into. Microsoft better ensure that Facebook, Foursquare etc that this feature might use, have high quality feature rich apps.
  • Thank god no hamburger...
Really hate moving my thumb at the top again and again... :'(
  • They should make hamburger consistent.  i.e Remove all, or add to this app ;)
  • Isn't this feature already in GroupMe... Which is a MS product...
  • They need to focus on one app
  • I think GroupMe won't show you the locations in a built-in map.  It would just open up the Maps application.
  • WTH? How come I never heard of this GroupMe app? I follow WP news religiously.
  • Because Microsoft has ignored GroupMe ever since they acuired it four years ago. GroupMe should've been beefed up to absorb all the features of Rooms. But instead, Microsoft has literally done nothing with GroupMe. I don't even think they interact with the team at all.
  • nt
  • Group me just had an update. Now has calendars! Great app. Use it more than texting
  • The calendar function in GroupMe is nothing like the functionality in Rooms. The GroupMe app doesn't integrate at all with the main calendar app. Rooms created a shared calendar that every room member had access to.
  • People (non)sense.... I couldn't hold....
  • There is people sense and people nonsense
  • nice except no one has windows phones.....so hopefully this is cross platform, otherwise it's another rooms fail.
  • Besides, they have their own IM apps. Why would they download this app.
  • Don't most chat apps do this now?
  • They can't share your location continuosly....this app is like tracking your friends coming to your party spot or traacking your kids.
  • F privacy xd...
  • I see
  • Oh look, another service that will last 2.3 years only to be changed or discontinued. #rooms #windows10onedrive
  • Could be perfect addition to the Room(s).... Eh...

  • Seems ubuntu-er. :P
    http://llu.is/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/ubuntu_logo.png
  • Not interested... If I want someone to know where I am I will just tell them, I don't need an app to let them know.
  • Good for the teenybopper bopping around the mall so their friends can see where they are...unfortunately said friends will have iPhones rendering this functionality as pointless as banning people because they just return with new names and emails...
  • I love apps like these. I work crazy hours and don't always have time or get too focused and don't check in with the wife. Then she will call me and I will be annoyed since I am busy. I used loopt back in the day so she could just tell where I was and know "ok he is 2 hours away, he ain't making it home for dinner". Google has this but they don't play with WP so I am excited that a free app is on the way. I hope it runs like google latitude did, in the background and once you allow someone no other input needed. Great for tracking the kids too
  • Ill tell u this .. There is an app named friend finder - .. It does the exact thing and is really really very good ... Give it a try n see , have been using it for 3 years now n it updates the location of everyone every 30'
  • cross platdorm sharing? If not then its wont work for me
  • Why get excited about a feature that will disappear in a year or so?
  • This logo(without color) is copyrighted by PULSARS!
  • Yeah, but nobody cares :'(

  • That one useful and ugly designed app
  • A really smart app.....hopefully will come with chat, photos, videos, calender, notes, documents and purchased apps sharing...and take on apple's ios rooms....
  • Instead of making Skype more usable like whatsapp or something like that and especially for us Windows PHONE users they rather focus on Non-Sense
  • I hope this is like find my friends where I can always see where they are right now. There isn't a replacement for that on windows phone. Everything requires me to send it myself, they can't ping it. Or I can only share it for a day and it only uploads every fifteen minutes. Its pretty much worthless. If its like find my friends on steroids I will eat it up.
  • If it's anything like the Apple iOS app "Find My Friends", then I'm very happy to see this.
  • Helicopter moms- * heavy breathing*
  • Does it worth for the google users too..
  • This is so useless
  • Not interested in this Sense. Next.
  • good one :D lolz
  • Yeah Right..! Rooms..
  • Er.....how is this different from the Location Sharing option on Whatsapp...which a lot of people don't use.....???!! Also most Os's such as Android, etc use Google Maps...and not HERE Maps... Even if the integration happens, HERE Maps need to be revamped....and from the whole "development" side of rhe software....pretty bad job done. I have wasted hours and been late for numerous appointments because HERE Maps couldn't locate a business HQ that's been in existence for a couple of years....but was shwoing up in my colleagues' Google Maps App on their Android and iOS Phones. C'Mon Microsoft...you guys need to rule. Not being a d**k (before I'm nailed by any of the MS reps) but I believe in MS.....and a die-hard fan. I have never owned (and hopefully never will) any other phone other than Nokia/Microsoft device. Also looking forward to an ACTUAL flagship in the summer. Would LOVE for it to be an upgrade to the Lumia 1520....as according to me, anything less MIGHT be a let-down to not just Microsoft Device owners but even those willing to switch from Android...
  • agreed that g maps shows little more details the here maps. but th focus of here maps has been always offline maps access and here drive. u are right with your point and we know that more development is required to bing and here maps.
  • How the Location Sharing option on Whatsapp is different from the location sharing option integrated in the Messagin hub (also Skype has this feature)? The Location Sharing option built-in in WP uses traditiona SMS so you dont need estra application and, if you hav WP, you don't need an internet connection. If you don't have WP you will receive an SMS with a link to a position. But this features is another thing, this features seem that enable to to follow in (near) real-time the position of your friends (like the maps in the videogames where you can see the position of your team) so the purpose and the scenarios when it si useful is different than the built-in sharing feature of messeging hub anthe feature of Whatsapp
  • My apologies if any unrelated stuff here....but needed to get this out.
  • Cool
  • Sounds like Life360. http://www.windowsphone.com/s?appid=a2fe74d5-c57f-44bd-8c12-9984b6aaaf9c
  • A little like a combination of Rooms, Nokia Chat and Nokia Pulse.
  • I love Nokia Branding ^^
  • Wat about group me app?
  • Microsoft should have updated Rooms... Its integration with contact hub is too nice and logical...!! ....we were using Life360 if we wanted a separate app...
  • Sorry to say that but it is totally different from what family rooms offered.
  • If you want to spy someone then you can use the people sense... It remain my opinion. What's yours?
  • They need a peepee sense, just like itoilet in curb
  • That's pretty cool
  • Y imo is not coming to wp???
  • Anybody knows???
  • I love leaks but I hate it also, especially when other competition reads about great Microsoft projects in the works, wish most great surprises were kept then announced like the HaloLens
  • Is background downloading available on win10
  • rooms replacement
  • With data and storage sense being part of OS. Sounds like might be feature in wp10 rather than an app
  • Why not just add that feature to text message instead of making another damn app, seems redundant what they did...just like they haven't automatically add Skype to phone for video calling. Hate Apple all you want but they have their iMessage and fact time all link in one with phone and text!
  • Because the Messaging hub already have a feature to share the position.... But this has another purpose.   PS: all of us should learn to use the products we bought ...
  • Pretty cool!
  • Developer Preview gonna be awesome :)
  • Wish they bring my terra lock screen back though... And people sense sounds great!!!
  • *disclaimer: Don't read this as a trolling comment. Read it with the voice of general frustration it is said with... The answer to getting rooms back is simple, we just need Android and/or iOS to implement it. After all, it seems we are simply beginning to give up on the unique modern design in favor of whatever Android is doing now. Or maybe they are getting rid of the functionality because Microsoft is planning to release a new Android app and we simply cant have Windows Phone doing something that a Microsoft Android App can. And for those that simply say, "use GroupMe", the calendar function doesn't integrate with the calendar app...it only shows in the GroupMe app. Again, pay little attention to me...just had to rant.
  • Good valid points though. Am hoping we'll see better integration in Windows 10 mobile. (see my suggestion below)
  • Would be nice to see these features build into the messaging app (which has Skype integration) in Windows 10 mobile. So you can have a quick glance where the person is who you are chatting to. Plus, as most of us have plenty of Skype contacts, it saves us building up another 'social network'. And most important, Skype is already cross platform. A strategy Microsoft seems to pursue these days
  • How well does the Skype integration work on Windows 10 for phone? Is it actually fast?
  • Looks great, but lots of people have tried location sharing - Google, Foursquare, Facebook, etc. People are generally very unwilling to share that info. (for good reason) Maybe they can find a way people will trust, but I dont see it.
  • Well I am. And I will be the user base.
  • At least there's no hamburguer menu! Give it up for pivots \o/
  • Another tracker
  • I want replacement for calendar sharing and OneNote.
  • Why don't they integrate this into Skype?
  • Another wasted use of intelligence. No, I will not let you know my every move. Just use Skype, Group Me and other Microsoft apps integrate with each other and make it universal on all Windows platforms. Seems to work great for imessage and a good try on hang outs. Just tired of losing useful features so make up your damn minds and give us stability!
  • I think this would be great. I wouldn't have to always ask where I should pick up my girlfriend, or if she is safely to her mother's house, etc etc. It is like watching flights live on the internet. Could be exceptionally useful.
  • Glympse is great for that.
  • That is really cool. It makes sense, considering location services are already pretty much always on. I know it makes people nervous, but screw that. I will share my location with trusted friends and loved ones so they can stalk me appropriately and efficiently.
  • Not interested. We need good apps not some useless apps... We need the games and app gap to be filled
  • Things like this would make sense to go cross platform. Hope it comes soon, glympse needs some competition in location awareness (refuse to use Waze since its owned by google).
  • Great idea. Like always someone will be very vocal against it, or everything. Good thing we have choice.
  • Or Redmond, instead of confusing people and building another App that most people won't use (thus you won't update), just build this sort of thing into Skype.
  • It looks like ios related features are making a debut in windows awesome
  •    Looks nice. On the plus side, this should come in very handy for parents trying to keep tabs on their children. It's so much more convenient being able to just open an app on your phone and locate a loved one instead of having to log in to windowsphone.com (and needing their account information) to locate a loved one. I really hope that Microsoft ADVERTISES this feature unlike they did with Kid's Corner. On the down side, I can also see this app being mis-utilized by possessive significant others.
  • Thank god!!!  No hamburger menu. I love windows phone uniqueness.
  • It's nice that they can still make an app that looks like WP and not junk like the W10 stuff.
  • Welcome to the socl
  • Couldn't they come up with a cooler name?
  • So it's basically SpiderPig App but for Windows?
  • Sounds like Swarm. But only for people with Windows Phones. There will be dozens and dozens of people using this, for sure!
