Microsoft Teams for desktop now testing support for quoted replies

Microsoft Teams is bringing support for quoted replies to the desktop. The feature allows people to reply to specific messages within a chat. It's a common feature in other chat apps, such as WhatsApp, but hasn't been available on the desktop version of Teams up to this point.

Quoted replies are now in public preview (opens in new tab) for the desktop version of Microsoft Teams. This brings the desktop version more in line with its mobile counterparts, which have supported quoted replies for a while.

Teams supports quoted replies in chats, but people cannot use them in channels at this time. You can reply to messages in channels in a thread, though that isn't an exact replication of quoting a specific message.

Quoted replies allow people to clarify which message they're responding to. In a chat that could include several topics of conversation, quoting a specific message can call back to a particular point.

To quote a specific message on Teams:

  1. Open a chat.
  2. Find the message that you'd like to quote.
  3. Click on the "..." menu on the message you'd like to quote.

  1. Select Reply.

  1. Add your message replying to the message you're quoting.
  2. Hit the send button.

When someone receives a quoted reply, they can click on the quoted portion to jump to the original message.

To try out this feature, IT admins need to set up a policy to show preview features. Microsoft notes that the same feature is on the way to Teams on the web.

  • It's ridiculous that they are only just now adding this to the desktop version of Teams when it has been on the mobile version forever. 😑
  • Yeah. I thought it is there from before in desktop version ( as i dk as i never used teams) , but this feature is there in Skype
  • I wish Teams would cease to exist, the flipping thing, then we would not get nagged to use it at work. No interest in using it whatsoever, I don't see the point in it, and I told them that at work as well.
  • 250 million people use Teams and you want it to stop existing because you don't see the use for it?
  • LOL, that was a joke, well kind of, It is just annoying that the company I work for is trying to push us to use it, I can understand where Teams may be useful in some places, mainly office, but not for my work. I work in the same building as the people I would chat to, so why would I use an app?
    We had a four-week trial, which is over, and it has not done so well, but it seems like they are extending the trial, while nothing have been said about the extension, it does seem like they are still keeping it going. I don't understand this need for apps to be used for everything, sometimes they are just not needed.
