InstaPic

A few weeks ago we mentioned that InstaPic, a fully featured Instagram client, had been released for Windows 8. Over the weekend, the developer released the Windows Phone 8 version of InstaPic but with a slight name twist... InPic.

The name change is likely in response to Instagram's request that unofficial client apps not use "insta" or "gram" in their titles.

InPic for Windows Phone 8 shares the same feature rich environment the Windows 8 version offers. InPic includes most of the features of Instagram including account log in, uploading photos (no videos), viewing videos, comment on photos, and follow other Instagram members.

While users on Windows Phone have been enjoying the ability to post to Instagram both unofficially (Instagraph, Instance, etc.) and officially (Hipstamatic Oggl), there has been one complicated and vexing issue haunting people: tags.

The concern can be best explained as thus: when users post using third party apps from Windows Phone, those images are not searchable if they use a hashtag. For example, if you publish using Instance with the hashtag “#wp8” in theory when you use the search key to find other photos with “#wp8”, you should see your latest post indexed. However, this is not the case as your image will be hidden.

Rudy Huyn, the developer working on the forthcoming 6tagram app has posted an article via his blog explaining the situation. The news is not very good and highlights the continued cat and mouse game between Windows Phone developers and the services they are trying to make apps for.

We recently reported that the developers behind the popular YouTube apps for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, PrimeTube, had a new one in the works titled InstaPic. The app was to be the very first, native Instagram client for Windows 8 devices, allowing you to see all of your images, activity, share images and more importantly, post directly through the app from your photo library or device camera.

We’re happy to report that InstaPic is now live in the Store and ready to be downloaded to your Surface or Windows 8 machine. You can see in our video tour that a native app, as opposed to an inferior “web wrapper” app, provides a fast and fluid experience. Indeed the app is quite fun to use and for being a 1.0 release, it’s quite stable (we did occasionally have a loading issue here and there, but trivial).

For those of you who can’t help to wave around your tablet and take photos, we have an exciting announcement. InstaPic, a full featured Instagram client will be headed to Windows 8 device shortly.

The application will allow users to view timeline and popular posts, search for users and tags, pin favorites to the Start Screen, locate friends from Facebook and their address book, and even upload photos to the popular social photo sharing service.
