Verizon Omnia II: Coming in mid-October with Windows Mobile 6.1

Okay folks we have some info that regarding the much anticipated Samsung Omnia II on Verizon, which has been evidently arriving for what seems like months now. (June, anyone?)

We're hearing from our source:

  • Verizon is waiting for Samsung to officially launch it first.
  • Verizon is looking to launch sometime in mid-October.
  • It will launch on Verizon with Windows Mobile 6.1.
  • Windows Mobile 6.5 will be in a ROM update, but not for a while.
  • The Omnia II is launching elsewhere with Windows Mobile 6.5.

Of course Verizon is also launching the HTC Imagio aka 'Whitestone' on Oct. 6, which we hear is still on track. That device is launching with Windows Mobile 6.5, giving a slight advantage over the Omnia II, at least initially.

Then again, the Omnia II has that swank custom UI, which is just a tad more impressive than Windows Mobile 6.5, so it's probably a wash. See it in action here.

Now knowing this Verizon-ers, which device are you holding out for? Hit the poll, and leave your reasons in the comments.

  • Assuming their UI is pretty good and assuming it extends past the main screens, 6.1 tends to be much faster than 6.5 anyways.
  • Have the original Verizon Omnia, haven't see any reason to upgrade at this point. Waiting for a phone that can beat 5 mp camera, 8GB storage, MP3s, and aGPS standard. Haven't see one yet, plus www.omniahub.com is awesome. It's like the iPhone app store minus the paying for stuff.
  • Okay what is wrong with all this htc lovers, the main issue with the htc phones are that they are boring all the way.
  • I emailed the president of VZW and received the following message back. I will not list the actual name of the writer but it is legit. WME where did you get this info? Are you sure it is legit? I REALLY hope it is. I will wait until November for the O2 but NOT JANUARY! LOL!! Message I received: Nick, Thank you for writing Lowell McAdam, President and Chief Executive Officer of Verizon Wireless. Mr. McAdam has asked me to respond to you on his behalf. Normally, Verizon Wireless does not announce the release of a device to the public until it has been tested and approved for use on our network. I am told that the device is being tested and awaiting approval for the release but will probably not come to market until sometime early in 2010. As for your inability to get this information from our Customer Service Department, normally these representatives to do know about devices that are in testing or plans to offer new devices until the formal release information is provided to them. This way, we can set our customers expectations accordingly. The release of this information normally does not occur until a release date is determined and training is offered. Thanks for your interest in the Omnia 2. I hope that this information is helpful to you and that you can defer making your purchase until the Omnia 2 is released. Sincerely,
  • I have pretty good confidence in my source, but nothing is 100% ;-) However, I would point out 4 pieces of converging evidence suggesting an imminent release: - Samsung posted the support guide for the Verizon Omnia II on Sept 22nd
    - It was listed in Verizon's system on Aug 28th
    - BestBuy had it in their system early August
    - You can pre-order the GSM version now This all suggests that the Verizon Omnia II loaded with WM6.1 has been ready to go for awhile, but other issues are keeping it from full release. We usually don't see that much converging evidence from a device coming out 6 months from now--that's just too odd. But I suppose we'll see in a few weeks, lol.
  • This phone looks AWESOME! The only thing that keeps me leaning towards HTC is the huge support they have going for them through xda-developers.. It's time for a new phone for me this winter.. so many decisions. Now if the US carriers could only announce the Leo coming soon..
  • Why such a failed Omnia 2 Windows Mobile 6.5 launch Verizon? This looks like the best Windows Mobile phone to get on Verizon and they can't hit the Oct 6 date with WM 6.5, only to launch mid Oct, maybe Jan as one commenter posted with WM 6.1? I will likely still hold out for it, but that only delays the renewal of my next new-ever-two.
  • i hope it will come with wm 6.5. hope tmobile will also be carrying it.
  • I wish the Omnia II will also be a dual CDMA/GSM phone like the HTC Imagio to be released Oct 6th. The AmoLED looks awesome....HTC LCD screens get all washed out on bright sunny days even in the car, and if I'm going to use GPS in broad daylight I believe the AmoLED screen will be awesome. I think I'll wait for this phone for sure...the 3D GPS maps will be grand. I have a relative who has the Omn I and the sound quality is just superb, even the speakerphone.
  • IIRC, AmoLED doesn't fair much better in sun than LCD, which is surprising. I know Phil noted that the ZuneHD wasn't so great in direct sunlight.
  • Still waiting on the LEO
  • This is the one phone that makes me jealous of my fellow CDMA cousins on VZW. A device with an actual upgrade in hardware components all around (as opposed to a slight screen res/size bump while sticking with the same innards HTC's been using for nearly 2 years.) It would be nice if it was WM6.5 as the finger-friendliness of 6.5 goes all the way to the core (slide bars, kinetic scrolling for everything, drop down boxes, etc.) I'm not sure how deep TouchWiz reaches - supposedly deeper than TouchFlo, but still . . . As somebody mentioned above, the lack of support from XDAdevs is largely mitigated by the fact that this is a CDMA device. Most of the heavy CDMA modding action goes on at PPCgeeks anyway.
  • Actually there are a lot of i910 development going on at modaco.com for wm6.5. This is why it is hard to see vzw not adopt the wm6.5 by oct6 since they've had the phone for the past 5months. I don't think its that hard but don't forget, it took them almost a year to update to cfo3 rom for i910. They're really slow on developing stuff. Lets just hope they don't delay it too long and miss out on the amount of sales they would have if released in oct.
  • I can wait. My new-every-two is coming up at the end of the month and I'm trying to pick which phone. Everything I've read is very positive. That combined with the low emissions and Samsung's past quality make it a great phone!
  • why you place i8000 picture instead of the I920 Picture?

  • This is a great phone but there is know way in hell that I am just gonna keep waiting and waiting for this phone to come out. There is a rumor here and there saying that the phone is gonna come out but it is know where to be found. I want to believe that the phone will come out in mid Oct. but I have also heard from a reliable source that the phone will be out around christmas. Verizon has the worst smartphones but hopefully that will change in the next 6 months. I guess I will have to get HTC but the only one I wanted was the Leo(HD2) and I will be amazed if verizon gets that in the line up. I am right about to change to AT&T so I can just buy the leo from europe.
  • What's going on with AT&T?
Verizon is getting all the new, nice, best phones one after the other. But AT&T got just crap or they get the better phones when they are already history.
  • Wouldn't mind adding this one to my arsenal he he.
  • If you look at the verizonwireless.com site the price of the current Omnia is dropping like a rock by the week. It is now down to $29.95 from $199.95 in less than 2 months. I would think they are trying to unload them quickly because once the Omnia 2 is released no one will want one.
  • I wonder when the next rumor for this phone will be out. We have probably heard about 4 already. Verizon delays way to much on these phones
