Windows 10 Mobile looks set to remove cellular download limits from the Store

Microsoft seems to be ready to say "download limits be gone" for its Windows 10 Mobile store allowing us to download whatever we like with a cellular connection.

First reported by the guys at WindowsCenter.ir, the latest build, 10149, removed the cellular data cap for downloads from the Store (Beta).

Sure enough, we've fired it up and this does seem to be the case. We had no trouble starting a download of Asphalt 8 from Store (Beta) on our device. Then promptly ending it because some of us still have data allowances to worry about.

For those with unlimited data plans and less access to Wifi though, this will be most welcome. Until it makes it into the release builds we'll leave jumping for joy for now, but we're sure a lot of folks will be happy to see this.

  • Great
  • No one noticed few small features as well...now we can do multi-finger swipe to close all the notifications in Action Centre..and We can expand the toggles with a swipe rather than touching on the expand arrow...and we can close action centre without reaching the bottom bar.. Just give an upward swipe anywhere under the toggles ,job done... :)
  • Nice features! Although we could already swipe with two fingers to close all notifications on 8.1, the others are new. Upward swipe from anywhere will be VERY useful. :D
  • Two finger swipe will close notifications under only one app right? Correct me if I'm wrong :)
  • It only works with three fingers for me
  • 4 fingers and a toe is the only thing that works for me. I like it.
  • 3 fingers works for me..
  • Any of my fingers works for her
  • That will dismiss ALL the current notifications.
  • Exactly..
  • Great findings, sometimes the details change our future.
  • :)
  • Pressing and holding certain notifications accesses their settings rather than just toggling. All except Mobile hotspot which crashes the phone. Also, any ideas why Quiet Hours is flashing?
  • Pressing and Holding toggles feature already been reviewed by Daniel ... And quite hours doesn't seems like working.. May be that's why it's flashing...
Get Started app is also there.. WC didn't make an article about it though..
  • Not just quiet hours, all other toggles are flashing for me
  • Then you need to restart.
  • What about Phone update through mobile data
  • That's amazing :O
  • Oh my God....Thanx for the info, now it only needs to show background processes like downloading & uploading in action center. I'm very much happy that we are having swipe up from anywhere to close the action center. :)
  • Many of the reviewers has noticed that they highlighted that in their videos. On YouTube.
  • They have to
  • Finally I don't have to come up with explanations... Why the limit is there...
  • Lol, defending the indefensible. I feel your pain... and now joy
  • To avoid people with data allowances from going over. Simple.
  • That explains why to have the option. It does not explain why we can't override it. Maddening, it has been to me, many times.
  • Well, you'll still get people "well it's not my fault Microsoft didn't stop me from going over the data allowance, I'm not paying that $9999999999 bill".
  • Nah it's to protect carrier from people who have unlimited data. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Why? They're already screwing US anyway! I just found out that unlimited Data is not REALLY unlimited highspeed data on T-mobile! You get 17 gbs(nothing to a power user like me) and then you get moved to a second tier list where you are no longer a priority for highspeed internet EVEN IF YOU'RE PAYING FOR UNLIMITED! You still have to go behind others, until your data restarts, which means your internet is being bottle necked like you paid for 10 gigs and went over! So yea, screw em'. Download Skyrim on your phone's cellualar connection!
  • If you just found out, then clearly you didn't bother to read your contract and I don't have much sympathy for you
  • There's Data sense.. We don't need that.
  • This is great
  • Yay
  • All about choices.
  • Niiccee... Now they should do the same for phone updates. And provide an option to choose between wifi and cellular data
  • Yeah they should
  • + offline maps
  • Forget that, add background download for maps first :P.
  • It looks like 10149 has background downloading of maps to me...
  • Exactly... Atleast we should be able to update our phones over 3G cellular data.
  • But they did. I was able to jump from 10136 to 10149 using my 4G. There's an option to download maps on a metered connection as well.
  • 10149 is out?
  • Thank you! I still have an unlimited data... Now i can use it to its full potential
  • Congrats
  • I confirm, Gt racing 2 : The real car experience can be downloaded by cellular data conection
  • Honestly, I'd like to be able to set my own limit.
  • This^
  • Stop making sensible suggestions. This is Windows Phone we're talking about! Without our arbitrary limitations and total lack of customizability, how would you even recognize the OS anymore?
  • Yes. Or warn over a size. Could be an expensive mistake especially if auto updating.
  • Amen...
    I have 2GB/month.
I want it to only download big stuff over WiFi.
  • Richard are you using a point and shoot to take these images or is it a Lumia?
  • I think Richard probably isn't so good with cameras... I can easily see his reflection there... It feels a bit odd and a bit less professional... Or maybe its just working on Sundays makes everyone uneasy...
  • I use a Samsung NX300 and I don't ever claim to be a good photographer. I could also have been putting my kid to bed at 8pm at night. But instead I posted this for you to decide I'm not professional. Thanks.
  • No no ... I was just wondering... We are used to such Beautiful shots of phones from you... They always are sublime... But today seemed a bit off so I asked.... It's Sunday... everybody Is allowed to go crazy and relax :) and thank you for your reports...
  • No its not what I meant to say... I just thought that my suggestion would help you for better... Coz a picture is worth a thousand words... Please don't take it in the other way...
  • Thank god hate being restricted to WiFi. I hope they do this for phone updates too
  • +offline maps plz
  • Ur new to windows phone?
  • You do know that Windows Phone has offline maps, been there for years buddy.
  • He's asking for an unrestricted offline maps download from mobile data.
  • There is an option for that in 10149....
  • I jumped from 136 to 149 using my 4G.
  • I downloaded the entire new build over 4G cellular data.
  • Microsoft improves thing and makes others more bad, photo app for example
  • Still I love W8's photo app.
  • I really would like to see a similar design on WP
  • W7's was the best with a beautiful background and options on top of it..
  • Yup... That panoramic album style is missing.... Now every shitty images like WhatsApp downloded will come and sit in Photos app at starting glance... Choosing background image and opening albums is very beautiful sort of....
  • Thank you!
  • Better to give users the right to set a limit of data upto which they can download on cellular connection..
  • Yup, that was in my mind too
  • We Indians can download GBs of data over 2G celluar data.
  • That's close to a miracle, why is your name not in the Guinness Book of Records
  • Don't you think Guinness book is too short for a Billion people of India? We Indians do miracle all the time...
  • #jugaad
  • exactly! :D
  • Exactly. In build 10136 I lost all my 200mb in a day. Probably because of the bug store beta.
  • You may set a limit on Data usage in Settings/Network & Internet. That page replaces Data Sense.
  • Hope the store doesn't start asking for all kinds of permissions like the one on this stupid god damn awful Android does. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • I hope it does.  The lack of granular security in WP8 is a major problem.  W10M looks to be a bit better, in this regard.
  • You want to click OK three times every f ING time you download an app? Plus it's not like you can pick which ones to allow access to in Android either _ just say yes or no to a list. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • In Android M the permissions are granular.  That's what I want.
  • Anyone notice that we don't have the ability to turn off data usage for specific apps? Just noticed...
  • Battery saver
  • I want different settings if I'm on data vs. If I'm on wifi
  • This build is not saving any battery for me :P
  • Good news
  • Great sometimes I dont fully use my all of my data wouldnt mind being able to download the odd game update that requires Wi-Fi
  • At last!
  • Thank heaven!
  • This is excellent news. Now if they can do the same with my OneDrive backups I'd be even more excited.
  • They also need to remove the limits for uploading pictures to OneDrive. The OneDrive Android app does not require one to wait for Wifi to upload pictures at full resolution. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Yup!
  • It looks like there is an option for uploading pictures over a metered cellular data plan now... (An no mention of uploading a "smaller" version.)
  • Thank God. Note just remove the full resolution photo and video upload restrictions!
  • Today Windows 10 Mobile almost killed my 1520 I don't want to read related news yet! Those hard resetting your phones in w10m take care! On wp8.1 now I MIGHT be back soon hehe
  • I want an option in the settings to set a limit. I have a data cap, and even if I didn't, I would want to download 700mb+ apps over a cell tower. Adding an app to a download queue would be helpful too
  • Nice one. My broadband is pathetic, 2mb on a good day, cellular up to 54mb and it's unlimited.
  • Fantastic news!
  • Can u please confirm if we can download maps and languages with cellular network?
  • Offline maps required me to connect to WiFi with the latest Update
  • Bout time! Woot woot!
  • there should be a quick question while setting up the win10 phone after hard reset "are you on limited or non limited data plan?" and that's it :) of course with chance to change later :)
  • There should be an option for this. I don't want to download the app via cellular data
  • It's optional. WiFi is all yours.
  • Nice, but they should give us a choice
  • Alot more stable build!!
  • Sweet
  • Make it available also for OS updates
  • Hopefully they will remove the limit of auto-uploading full sized pictures over cellular too. I want the full quality picture, and I don't want to wait for WiFi to be available... It's my plan/money let me decide how I want to use it...
  • Got like 7GB unlimited data bundles, bring it on Microsoft
  • 7GB unlimited?
  • Yeah, that is not unlimited lol.
  • 7GB LTE .. And post usage 3G.. May be ;)
  • I think we should have a settings option in the Store app, to choose whether we want the wifi restriction or not.
  • Very Cool
  • The store looks super boring. I hope they really polish the design before RTM because it looks bland as hell right now.
  • With an image background like in windows phone 8. I'm sad that microsoft had made few things look bland like the store and Xbox music in 8.1.
  • Yes. Let me choose how to use the data I pay for. So nice of you guys! Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Great. The less limitations, the better.
  • Instead of putting up limitations like that, they could make the data sense app more feature rich. Like giving fine tune controls to users about the time cellular connection was turned on to the time it will end right up to minutes and seconds. Also, the ability to reset counters manually would be nice. Also, it would be great if data sense app could turn off the cellular connection when data approaches its limit or users could set up a user defined value to turn the cellular data off. It would be a great help. Since, some of us go to sleep while putting phone on a large download only to find out after waking up that the data limit was exceeded and it drained your prepaid balance through base rates. Has already happened to me twice. *sigh*
  • Just turn off data before going to bed. Or better option: turn on flight mode
  • I think it should be optional, let people set custom limits, y'know? Some want to download all the things, others want to pace themselves. Maybe add it to Data Sense?
  • They changed the dialer as well
  • Cool!! MS is on fire.windows 10 for mobiles is something that can't be ignored
  • Fantastic, this is the sort of stuff we need in WM!
  • This was the thing where they lacked and always ignored. Good they are implementing now. Need to release builds fast for fast ring users.
  • Windows 10 mobile is awesome! Now I worried about my Lumia 630, is there any 512mb Ram limitation from all of these new features?
  • If you are talking about these kind of small features.. Well, I already have it on my 512MB device.. So no worries..
  • That's great
  • Grandfathered Unlimiter says "Wut WUT??!!"
  • I'm all about having choices, but I can already predict how there will be many incompetent people getting billing surprises.
  • ^^ this and then MS gets blame.
  • Yeah, that's all there is to this news. About time too....
  • My unlimited data connection celebrates.
  • Can we update also? with cellular data
  • Finally!
  • About damn time. Three UK gives truly unlimited data for been waiting ing for this. Finally they have woken up. Thank you Microsoft Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Wow great love windows finally Microsoft listened to me :P
  • How to make Microsoft listen to us?
  • USB OTG please
  • That sure is lovely. Now give us frigging Background downloading.
  • Nice idea totally in support of it. Well the idea of putting the restriction to data sense isn't to satisfactory with me. It will be better putting restrictions in settings of store because I'm hearing all these things are all apps in WP10 and lets not forget that some apps don't work in background like when battery saver is on. Letting the store do the restriction could more safely do that regularly and in background
  • Horrible idea. Imagine an app of 200mb publish an update while you are not on WiFi, there goes 200mb of data usage just like that for an update no one says you even wanted. On WiFi, who cares. On data I guess most people will. What they should do is allow the user to specifically enable a single pending download to be allowed over data. But it has to be on user action, imho
  • You can limit auto update to wifi only..
  • For you, a lot of us have very large data allowances, we want the option. Just because you dont want something, should everyone else suffer for it ? It's a great IDEA if you can configure it. I am fine with a warning and I would bet even if they enable this, it would give a warning if going over 50mb or so...
  • It's not ready for my Lumia 720. There's so many lag and hang.So it sad that I returned to 8.1 again.
  • Alleluah,that will be wonderful.
  • What about other usages besides the Store?? Is lame to cap it when I cannot even download larger podcasts from the Internet!
  • I hope so we need this so badly in Nigeria
  • Great, we need this.
  • We already have a toggle option to make downloads to wifi only even in 8.1 store settings. Keeping it off achieves the same isn't it? What's new?
  • cool! Richard, since when you started reading Persian articles?! :D
  • This sounds great! If I still had my unlimited plan data...or my 1320
  • This seems backwards. When unlimited plans were more accessible, WP had download limits. Now that even old grandfathered unlimited plans are not unlimited, MS takes the limits off. If would make more sense to maybe to have thr setting configurable with a user defined size. If not, the auto update of apps will kill the quota of many users.
  • Is there the "3G only" feature in Win10??
  • Yes.
  • That's sound great..Was waiting from past 1yr...Good work..
  • Great
  • Store is very slow
  • Store is very slow
  • Good!
  • usb otg now...
  • I cannot update or install anything, and its so laggy.
  • Asphalt 8 wont work for me. Any one have same problem?
  • Anyone Installed New build in L720
  • That's really nice....
  • I'd like a choice in the matter. AT&T doesn't offer any lube with their overage charges.
  • Windows Phone is being more and more andvance day by day.. I wont wonder if it will crack the first rank on mobile os..
  • Thats good news we shud be able to download OS updates as well over cellular data cause realy most of us dnt have access to wifi but cellular
  • What's a data allowance? Hahah #SprintingAhead
  • Lol.
  • Yea, exactly but, I have Verizon Unlimited LTE....I would take that ANY DAY over Sprint :)
  • Very good news :)
  • Good news though. But in India, downloading Asphalt 8 in a 3G connection will take months.
  • Great to have, I won't be using it any time soon, but its good that the option is available for when I do increase my monthly data limit.
  • About f***ing time
  • Nice.
  • I just received another update after installing build 10149 the latest build did anyone receive another update now.i want to be sure if what I'm installing.
  • Yeah..its a great news
  • Please say this is optional somewhere in the settings... a bit like the 'metered connections' thing on Windows 8. I don't want to accidentally download a bunch of huge app updates over 4G and chew through all my data allowance!
  • Data sense is there for you :)
  • Finally! Let crown-ups choose for themselves...!
  • Amen to the d/l limit removal
  • This has always been an issue for me. I am travelng for business and I wnat to try a new app or game to keep me busy as I wait for something (flight, hotel room, etc). A 50mb app with download fine but, a 52mb one wont. So a game that is 400-600mb, I cant download. I have unlimited data, I should be able to use it when I want to. If people dont, put a option in there to WARN this will take a lot of data blah, blah but, at least give us the option. If we have the data and we chose to use it on an app, so be it...
  • Why all the existing apps are moving to beta like Lumia camera and store. Please reply ?
  • Is 10149 safe for 512mb devices?
