Windows 10 Mobile updates for older Windows Phones delayed until early 2016

It looks like owners of older smartphones with Windows Phone 8 or 8.1 will have to wait a bit longer to get their promised over-the-air update to Windows 10 Mobile. Microsoft has now officially confirmed that those updates won't begin until sometime in early 2016, rather than December as the company previously announced.

Here's the official statement from a Microsoft spokesperson, as posted at Thurrott:

"This November we introduced Windows 10 to phones including brand new features such as Continuum and Universal Windows Apps with the introduction of the Lumia 950 and 950 XL. The Windows 10 Mobile upgrade will begin rolling out early next year to select existing Windows 8 and 8.1 phones."

Owners of older Windows Phones will likely have more luck getting their update to Windows 10 Mobile by signing up for the Windows Insider program.

  • Coming soon... in the first half of 2016...
  • Or, here now on Insider :)
  • yes, with bugs
  • You can get a spray...right? =[
  • That's what I did. I put that ***** on my L640. Insider style
  • Is win 10 working fine for lumia 640?
  • Yes
  • ...but only if your phone is supported! + Samsung Ativ S jeeeej. Hate it.
  • I use to have Samsung ATIV S.
Good phone. Better than most Lumias at the time (bar 925).
    However, 930 is different league.
  • Just change the registry. It works great on Ativ.
  • oh, whaaaaat? word. =p
  • Im keeping it as is. Not worth it yet. Been using it on a l929 instead sadly ive lost interest in reinstalling apps or using it. Too many sites I use still have various problems & my carriers account app doesn't work & datasense counter still randomly resets frequently
  • Insider doesn't count/ It makes the phone almost non usable. Seeing the state of Windows Mobile 10, it is not surprising that it is delayed. It is just regular Microsoft.
  • ive been using windows 10 for months on my mobile 930 and its one of the most stable os experiences i have had.  Usually i install the new update have 2-3 wierd issues on day one then after day one everything is great.  II couldnt even use the term unusable 3 months ago cause it wouldnt fit with my 930 experience.  Maybe unusable 6-8 months ago but not now.  Now if your talking about lower older cheaper phones then ok but certainly not the lumia 930.  Last buil no crashes,  i use plex netflix all the time and no crashes i the last few weeks.  All my apps open significantly fast.  no problems with  the start menu unless butter smooth is a issue.  Grove music downloads and updates are all working great and fast.  Wif fi simply works where ever i go and it remembers all my passwords lol.  I have 3 emails linked to 1 live tile and it works great and a 4th email on a seperate live tile.  Actually only issue i have found is my message live tile doesnt always refresh. intagrap app 6tag is wonderful,  Kype is good but not yet finished and need ts to ring faster on both mobile and desktop. Photo app, camera and groove are super and reliable, yeh hamburger on groove mobile needs to go. Spotify works great.  You tube doesnt crash anymore and is very reliable on both metro tube and tube cast.  Kodie remote works great, though its new design is a little worste. One drive, here maps and here drive all work great.  All my games work and are very smooth.  I just dont know where to place the word unusable into this, maybe if i had a cheap android phone i could say unusable?.the 19 build was the firft built i didnt have to use my revert back to 8.1 and do a fresh install without a restore option.  So maybe try and do a fresh install on your phone without the restore to old, i know thats supoer anoying but it might stop your phone being unusable. if you have any battery issues also its just a app or 2 that youll need to find and uninstal but my battery issues were not really a isse for me.
  • Totally agree Jason. W10 is faster and Microsoft have now include swipe from the left to get the menu in Groove. And, if you put the Store app in Landscape the menu is tabs. The new W10 phones like the 640 have the addition of double tap the menu bar to switch off the phone, as well as Glance and double tap to wake. W10 on my 930 (now damaged and about to be replaced) and my SP3 is simply awesome. Unusable and unstable just dont apply here!
  • Some bluetooth troubles and notifications on the lock screen are a bit hit or miss, but many things are running faster than they did on 8.1 and the visual improvements (lumia icon) are noticeable and nice looking.  Sending links via email is still pretty slow at some steps but improving.  Battery life is about where 8.1 was maybe a bit better.  A few apps need to be undone and redone sometimes.  Engaget app doesn't work, but website does so no worries.  Browser doesn't clean itself up (tabs just build up and need manual sweeping out) every time you open, but again, minor stuff.  Touch is a tiny bit more prone to mistaking a tap for an angled swipe in 10 vs 8.1, but again, pretty sure they can gradually refine that (low fruit).  Overall its enough of a visual treat that others have commented how nice the screen and actions are on the phone and are surprised windows now looks like that.  They are impressed when they see it.
  • Release date will likely be around the same time as the 650. February-April
  • Ya, I think It's Microsoft Marketing Strategy that If Win10M for Older WP may release early, most Older WP users will not upgrade to newer devices.
  • Maybe installing it on older phones will brick them and people will just give up. At least that's my case for another 2 years.
  • It is better to have a good release rather than a pre-matured early release.  We learned that from L950/XL.
  • +1020
  • Yangstax, it's just "premature release" (no hyphen and no need to add the word "early"), otherwise you're effectively saying "a too early early release". Sorry, I just had to point that out, I definitely agree with you though! ;)
  • Are we talking phones or matters of an intimate nature?
  • It works either way. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • That's what s/he said? =[
  • @yangstax: My average 6 year old kids lol'd. I am not allowed to upgrade W8.1.1 of my 640 to W10 of the 950XL. They don't like it, the bugs, the apps missing. Still happy myself except for the high lowest screen brightness. I am amazed at how such young ones discern their discomfort so clearly, and consider it advisably for MS to check that level as well. Would SJ have done? lol
  • Buhahahahahahahaha! And then delayed until end of 2016 and then releasing along with iOS10.
  • yawn
  • I like my Windows Phone 8.1 OS. I don't mind waiting for a fully baked Windows 10 mobile OS for my 1520, 920 and my lady's 640.
  • They just want people to buy new phones that's all.
  • I agree. They are like "buy new phones if you want new features. we might not support your old one" LOL
  • They are as good as Apple in supporting their old phones
  • Like every other phone company, no?
  • If they don't hurry up, apps will start leaving windows 10 mobile before it even launches.
  • The question is, though: Is anyone surprised?
  • If they pushed to the masses with serious bugs, like motion tracking not working, WiFi, mobile hotspot failing on some models, they would leave themselves wide open to litigation, as they would make handset not fit for purpose.
  • Early 2016 meaning after two weeks? Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • i think no, it means sometime in early months of 2016 like January or February or even in march
  • Are you Clairvoyant or you just saying it for kicks? You have no more idea than the rest of us. 2016 is in two weeks. I leave you with the weegie board...
  • Ouija board*
  • I heard you have to use one of those while saying "ouijaouijaouija..." is that true? =[
  • LOL we all know what "early 2016" means. If it were in 2 or 3 weeks or in a month they would have said so, to get people excited.
  • Maybe even June, July or August, you never know!
  • Well, at first, they said that this is due later this year. Now, its early next year. Then it might be late next year. So it means that we will receive it early 2017. /s
  • Denim/ 8.1 Update 1 was supposed to be released around this time last year but got delayed to January/February of this year. Hopefully the delay will be about the same with Windows 10.
  • Denim was Nokia firmware, 8.1 was windows phone OS from Microsoft. 2 different companies at the time. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • Nope! Early 2016 means the first quarter..that extends upto March! And might be as late as end of April too..
  • I want windows 10 mobile upgrade but I can wait for the bugs to be iron out...
  • It will have bugs regardless as usual
  • lots of protein... =p
  • Exactly why it's being delayed - they want to get this RIGHT. If bugs don't bother people they can and should just go Insider. =P
  • Then they should concentrate on the basics first.
  • Just go Slow and you'll be all right ;-)
  • Pfft. No. I went slow and it wasn't alright.
  • At this point I don't care how much it takes as long as they keep the work until W10Mobile performance and battery management is not as good but better than 8.1
  • Same here. I'm glad that it's been delayed.
  • I can assure you, win10 will never run great on old devices, especially on dual-core ones. I can see a freaqing huge difference between 950 and my 1020, on bugs and everything, my 1020 having the newest version... I know, i know, people come like screaming, yeah 950 has monster hardware, well, before win 10 there wasn't such an issue;). I mean, there are really small diferences on day to day usage conparing flagships on 8.1 with older flagship versions, if there were any!!!
  • Then theres quirks like edge which depending how in-touch those devs are may fix eventually this year
  • I had a Lumia 1020 and still have a Lumia 930, the difference was night and day on Windows 10 Mobile - It runs great on the 930 for me. The 930 is a completely different beast to the 1020. I loved owning the Lumia 1020 for 2 years but it is a very slow phone compared to the 930 and better.
  • I don't know what your use case is but my 1020 was painfully slow. I actually celebrated when I destroyed it.
  • my 930 has veryually no issues with win 10, i miss my gestures but its superfast and very reliable and thats a old device.
  • Depends on your device, but you may be waiting a loooong time based to the SP4/SB battery issues.
  • Key word is "select" existing phones..which is not promising for all devices.
  • and as stated eariler they are doing wave roll outs, they have selected a first wave of models, then the rest will be in the 2 wave.
  • We've known this for some time now. Delays sucks, but it's necessary with mobile devices because they risk running off the handful of users they currently have if "ruin" existing phones with new software.
  • Go to Microsofts site it states 640, 640XL att and unlocked / 735 Verizon. This for the US site. There may be a few more but not much.
  • And the 630, 635 and 730 also. It seems they targeting the phones with snapdragon 400 chipset for the first wave.
  • And, in the second wave, will there be the Samsung ATIV S ? ...
  • The ATIV S will probably never get the update. I used an ATIV S for over a year after 8.1 was released and it never got the update officially from Samsung. Since many models of the ATIV S did not get 8.1, it is very unlikely they will get 10.
  • I still don't get why people bought that crap. Oh well, have fun with it:))).
  • It was the best for your dollar raw specs-wise in can/euro
  • Early 2016 = last week of Q1
  • hahaha.. :p
  • Last 20 minutes! :|
  • i was trying to be nice but yeah pretty much
  • That would be
  • That's the way T-mobile do it. Then it ends up halfway through next quarter. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • As expected.. Coming 'Soon'.. LOL! I don't know why MS has to announce new hardware and software so early, if they can't make it on time?!
They should've said it will rollout only on 2016 from the beginning itself!
  • So you've never encountered an unexpected problem that created a delay ever in your life? Must be awesome to be you...
  • Never something that has delayed me for months.
  • Have you ever made a whole phone and OS?
  • Yes he has never made it and also will never promise to make it to finally release a half baked product after delaying and making insider programs for 11months and making users give justifications that are totally baseless. Loyal fans grow up. You have no idea about how baseless your comment is when you put it comparing with the competition, market trends and consumers. Your whole phone OS doesn't have apps, its half baked, it doesn't have half the features, Cortana most parts of the world still have alpha and beta is ****... What more? But though I still stick on to wp, doesn't mean I give some baseless justifications like u do for the delay.
  • Uh, try rereading? he said he has never been delayed for months and I was merely pointing out that that is because he has never done a project of this scale. And by the way ad Hominem attacks really aren't becoming.
  • Actually, the emj guy is right. After 11 mounths of developing with so many users...is a bit funny that ms is still unable to release a freaqing good version. I mean, they released three phones that run crapp *** OS. AFTER 11 F**KING MOUNTHS. Or maybe even more....
  • Lumia 950 and 950XL users are the mass porting testers..
  • So you have ?? That's a lame argument. The insider program have been running for couple of months. Its already late even for beta testing. Its kinda like gamma testing you know the one where they postpones the release date. Yeah I read the article right first wave right. Well majority of the users lies in the other half. Yeah I am frustrated and I have every right to. Been with windows for too long?? everyone gets frustrated. I think its called resuming or may be loading Im not sure well Im in a state of both.. :)
  • when you say the insider program has been running for a couple of months what do you mean?  Ive been using the mobile insider for alot longer now since february thats about 10 months dude a little more than the 2 you have mentioned. I have seen microsoft go from being really slow at updating things in the last few months to some very nice faster paced updates and its also been showing with their third party developers too,  im geting alot of updates all the time now.  To me i see microsoft geting better and better(as long as they dont do another marketing mistake like their onedrive anouncement that they took back and apolagised for.)  We all have to remember microsoft is working hard and fundimentally changeing its whoolle structure but at the end of it well have 1 app to rule all devices, personally i dont mind waiting a little for that to happen smoothly.  I just wont wait years, but a few months is absolutly fine at this stage, especially when we keep seeing the improvements every few weeks. Personaly i thing gratz to microsoft for theyir hard work  followed by a ple dont miss market anything else.
  • Dude, ur justifications are so immature which is why the wp will never have market share more than 3%. Its competition out there and whether he has encountered or not, 11 months of insider and still delaying is ****..
  • But with Microsoft and Windows Phone this has become the norm, not a one off delay.
  • In the state Win10 Mobile was 3 months ago, we all knew it wouldn't be ready in 3 months. I was surprised when they released the timeline. I'm more surprised how they released 2 phones with this software at the state it is! I don't think even Microsoft thought 950(XL) were going to sell well. They had already selected the target audience: Microsoft "super fans" who wouldn't mind buying a non-flagship looking flagship with an incomplete OS, for the same price or even higher price of a full-fledged, ready to go flagship. The funny thing is the cancelled 850 looks A LOT more flagship and much prettier than either of them!
  • But......it's worth the wait :)
  • You stay there buddy. I have been staying there for too long since WP7 days.
  • New hardware? The new hardware has Windows 10 Mobile, what are you talking about? This only concerns old hardware
  • Life happens...
  • They announced new hardware and software, and delivered on it. I have my Lumia 950XL sitting in front of me. They (when Nokia) also released the hardware this is for years ago, in the form of the 920. This is putting the software on existing phones, using the carrier's networks where they need to abide by their rules, not them pushing out an upgrade when they want to. During the beta phase people where whining and complaining that builds were not released fast enough. Then when there was a build and something didn't work, people like you would complain about all the bugs. If there was some bug that bricked an older phone, people would be demanding that Microsoft replace their phone, but you also want that update now. The entitlement culture on display.
  • You explained it exactly!!!!!
  • The entitlement culture is disgusting and embarrassing.
  • You sir enjoy your lumia. Everyone could afford a phone now and then you know poor people stuff. I recently read an article that states microsoft could release updates without any carrier hindrance.    You still know its been a couple of months the OS is in beta people expect atleast an update in a month or two and if in it the previous bugs are still present or more annoying they could complain. Well thats what beta is for right. Agree you on the bricking thing. But people are forced to join insiders. What would you say to a guy who whines about the late update release. Go be an insider right.
  • your not forced to go on insider at all, you have to chose it.  Not everyone wants to be a insider.  On my desktop i stoped being a insider cause i like what i got now and i got what i need.  On mobile im a insider but once i have a full working intigrated skype, windows geatures and a apple pay format ill also stop being a insider cause ill have what i want.
  • People feel like they have to go insider because they don't get what they want. Microsoft should have protected WP8.1 instead of partially abandoning it while trying to beta-test W10M. Now they have two crippled OSes and no actually OS at hand.
  • Sadly this happened with Cyan and Denim too.
  • Well, to be fair Windows 10 is technically a 2018 OS... =p
  • Yeah, and that is why, will never be Official:))
  • No news there is still not ready for windows 10.
  • This laziness cost Microsoft so much and Microsoft is regular in their laziness
  • You are right, they sit around all day doing nothing but laughing at all you people for buying their products while they count their money. I bet right now they are not even at work, probably at some bar reading your post and laughing at you. And based on your name (and language) I assume you are in India. I work a few miles from the Microsoft campus, if you were to write "When in India" I bet I would hear them laughing at you from where I am at.
  • Neel, there's a solution. Just sign up for the Windows Insider program, and you can get the build RIGHT AWAY. It's very stable.
  • Lol, if you didn't mention Microsoft one would think you were talking about CoD developers.
  • Comment from Microsoft : ^^ The above comment @nohone: YOU JUST SPOKE WHAT WAS THERE IN OUR MIND.
  • It is Christmas break technically... =p
  • I wander if you work, cause such a great mentality can't tell me but one thing: He is 16
  • Rightly said! Lol
  • i hope so after all its christmas and well i have a fully funtioning reliable phone with weindows 10 and desktop with windows 10 working great 2, i say go enjoyu your christmas microsoft you do deserve it and plse when you come back in january can you get windows gestures working back on the 930 :)))) prety plse, january late is fine too.
  • Never had any plans to update anyway. Hamburgers dont go with my diet....
  • Nice one
  • Swipe in from the left brings in menu and Store in Landscape has tabs. It's looking better and better on W10 - I would not return to 8.1 now.
  • There are still plenty of pivots so you get your exercise
  • Hahaha.
  • As long as Windows 10 Mobile is more stable by then, they can take their time!
  • Off topic, but am I the only one that keeps getting smartscreen errors on WC?   Content on this website has been reported as unsafe static.reelfeed.tv Hosted by:  www.windowscentral.com

  • February ???
  • "to select existing Windows 8 and 8.1 phones"   I won't even comment. I'll just wait for the eventual sh*tstorm that Microsoft will get once they eventually leave out a bunch of phones...   That said, I have absolutely no plans of updating any of my old Nokia Lumias to WP10. I've been testing it on a Nokia 830 and the thing is worse than WP8.1 in almost every way. And if USB OTG isn't going to be put on older hardware, then there's really no reason for me to subject the phones to a buggier version of the OS just "because". Specially on the 1020.
  • wen 4 HTC 8X? ;)
  • Please... Anyone who reads DjCBS and is thinking about upgrading using the windows insider program, ask someone else about their upgrade before taking his word for it. Win10 is infact much better than 8.1 IMHO and I think getting a few opinions will give anyone who maybe on the fence clarity....for the record..very few if any issues with the build before this latest update... On my 635,640,821,830,925,1020,1320 and 1520
  • How on earth do you have so many phones?
  • He got me beat 925 1520 520 640
  • When in India?
  • With AT&T certainly...I only have half of those because I'm with T-Mo. Honestly if they didn't cripple the 810, I'd still be using it =[
  • How did they cripple it? by not updating it?   I was able to update mine through the developer preview. I wish they did offically update it though, new firmware would have been nice.
  • Yeah everyone, listen to the guy that owns 8 Lumias. I'm sure he is un-biased lol
  • The "freedom" and "features" that Windows 10 bring were already available in Android. We didn't stick around WP for its features, but for the design. Now Windows 10 looks like a buggier, less stable Android with features that haven't matured yet. Honestly anyone who finds Windows 10 Mobile intriguing should choose a messy droid. P.S. "Continuum" is basically Android having TV Out through USB Type 3, scaling its UI to the connected screen, just like how it works on tablets. It's not like any Win32 programs are going to run on the phone, so it isn't different from Android on a larger screen. I say this because Continuum is being advertised as kind of a revolution, but if Google decides tomorrow that they want this feature, they can easily implement it in the next Android release. The device just needs to support 2 displays. Everything else stays the same.
  • yeh my 930 is awsome too.  even though i feel windows 8.1 is the best mobile os ever i am still useing windows 10 mobile over it now.  dont get me wrong i love windows mobile 10 but its not the consistansy ui that 8.1 was, if you took awy hamburger menu and gave use back gestures, have a full working apple pay method then yes i would label windows 10 as the best mobile os ever, **** hamburger change alone would ern it that status from me.  But having 4 colums of live tiles on my 930, skype intergration, new photo app and new netflix, plex apps alone make windows 10 mobile prety dam apealing to me, Live tiles is even better, i love my calender and weekly view, groove is a huge imp[rovment over xbox music but i still want a swiping player not a hamburger one, and yeh more album views so i can see instead of 4-5 albums at one time maybe a full 5ich worth with 25-30 albums per page.   Ether way i still love my windows experience.
  • Some have said it's not so great on dual-core processors, be interesting to hear if that's true or not. Hey, we all have preferences and I accept yours, but running 10586.29 on my 930 is faster and no bugs....lucky.....maybe. But, I would never return to 8.1 now. My 930 had an accident yesterday and damaged so checked out the Lumia 550, 640 and 950 and was pleasantly surprised. The on screen keys allow double tap on the menu bar to switch off the phone, which I liked. May get the 640 as a reserve in case the 930 dies. It has Glance, double tap to wake and switch off and is £129. For the price that's impressive. The 950 does actually look great with Dark Theme but a bit too much as a reserve phone.....for now.
  • I think the 640 is pretty sweet... =D
  • It runs great for me on my Lumia 930 too. I tried the latest 10586 on my Lumia 435 test device too....Ran very well. Obviously not as fast and smooth as the 930 but they are completely different beasts. A much better experience than when I was running older builds on the Lumia 1020 (Which I don't have anymore, so can't comment on the latest builds on that particular phone)
  • I've tried W10 Mobile on various Lumias and every single one of them ran better than on 8.1. Mind you I did a hard-reset before hand. Same goes with Window 10 on PC. Format before installing it and it runs much better.
  • The Nokia 830 I'm testing it in is a dedicated device I have for it. It's always hard reseted and all versions are fresh installed because there's absolutely no problem in wipping out the entire phone. It's still a worst experience than 8.1 with lags, loadings, stutters and a completely shattered UI experience. I do have a 930 but it's my "Xbox Portable" (ie, a gaming device) and I won't be installing WP10 in it even for testing. All my other WP devices are Lumias prior to the 830 and 930 (because I don't buy non-Nokia Lumias). SO, if WP10 runs this poorly on a Nokia 830, it's pretty obvious to me that I won't be putting it on the 920, 820, 630, 620 and most definitely not on the 1020 that I have here. I won't put it on the 930 either (unless Microsoft eventually puts Continuum on the 930 which I doubt) and the 830 will probably be flashed back to 8.1 once Microsoft kills WP/W10M altogether after the release of the "Surface Phone".
  • its great on the 930 you definatly wouldnt regret it.  I only really miss one thing that i used all the time on 8.1 and thats windows gestures.
  • Will it come to Lumia 720 ?
  • Never
    So shut up now please
Thank you and go out and enjoy your life out of your smartphone
  • Only via the Insider Program
  • Don't worry it will eventually come.
  • Come with freezing screen XD
  • Sure, why not....
  • I just updated my Lumia 730 to build 10586.36 via the Windows Insider Program, and I can safely say that it is ready for general use. I haven't encountered any bugs.
  • Same here. Runs smooth. Lumia 735 Verizon.
  • Stability, battery life and speed is top-notch for me (Lumia 640), has been for several builds already. There are a few visual bugs in some places that still haven't been fixed even after two cumulative updates but no deal-breakers.
  • Hey, have any of you noticed that when you click the lock button to resume using the phone, it takes a second or two to display the date and time instead of instantly popping up?
  • Works fine for me.
  • Are you on the latest build? That was definitely a more common issue in older builds. I see it happen every now and again on my 930 but not often and it doesn't really bother me too much.
  • Yeah. I checked. That lock screen is not much of an issue, but once or twice, it does take a second or two for the time to pop up.
  • This has been an issue from the very beginning of Insider program. Yet to see a olution to this. It seems this is not counted as an "issue" at Microsoft.
  • Same 930 on 586.29
  • Same here on Lumina Icon. Fater battery life better than 8.1. functionallity , etc.  If it keeps getting better. . . WOW!
  • It's 3 hours later. How about now? Any bugs?
  • How well does the 920 work with the most recent builds?
  • Okay. But not daily driver ready. More than enough lag to make it a little annoying to use.
